Licensing negotiations, I have to assume. Most of these games as well as MvC3 were made back when the guy in charge of Marvel was way more hands-off with what videogames did with their properties (as long as they didn't do outright character assassination). The guy who was in charge before Infinite came out basically saw it as an excuse to promote the MCU and that's it.

Sure I watched some of those. I stumbled upon Samurai PIzza cats when I was a kid and it became one of my favorite shows. I've seen a bunch of Speed Racer over the years. Doesn't mean most people know anything about those. Speed Racer is by far the most well-known IP you mentioned outside of Japan, and most people who are somewhat familiar with it think it's a joke.
JoJo was consistently on the verge of being cancelled in Jump at the time despite having a dedicated readerbase, they probably didn't give a shit about the property.

I don't see how Capcom can't easily procure a Jump license when literally everybody else can. Bamco, Spike, Ganbarion all did Jump games and some of them got even localized. FFS the Chinese have made Jump crossover gacha games.

The first version, Cross Generation of Heroes, had Hakushon Daimaou who had to be cut in the next version after his creator's estate started asking for more licensing fees. As for new characters, I could see Tatsunoko adding either old or new Muteking and Hajime from Crowds and Capcom going in on C. Viper, Leo from Red Earth or Ammy
Gatchaman is my favorite anime and Street Fighter my favorite game series. This was made specifically for me and I now give Capcom permission to port it.

My point was that how strong you should actually be in comics is always a massive case of "it depends on the writer". In theory, Magneto should be completely unbeatable as he controls magnetism which is one of the four fundamental concepts of physics. We both know there's been plenty of times where he was stuck with "I throw a i-beam at you"

Probably because X is not only one of the biggest properties in the world, but it's a collection of some of the greatest fighting games to have ever existed, and something most people thought was actually impossible in this day and age. Darkstalkers is cool, but it's not Marvel vs Capcom levels of cool.
I honestly don't get why more SF and MvC players aren't into Darkstalkers considering they're about as closely related and influential to each other as any video game series could be.

FlycastGGPO has outpaced Fightcade for almost two years now. There's an unfortunate rift between three separate Marvel 2 scenes because pof and his team haven't bothered to push any of Flyinghead's improvements to the main branch.
It's the same story on PS1: Fightcade has always been dragging their feet and pocketing the Patreon money. I've been playing Street Fighter EX flawlessly on DuckstationGGPO for months now.
mvc2 pros switched to rps3 to play ps3 mvc2 because fightcade has dropped inputs and issues with connection.
this port is arcade perfect and includes rollback.
Fightcade's main selling point is how good it is to get matches. You can't out convenience fightcade.
The version of MvC2 on fightcade does not use Rollback netcode, due to the nature of the Naomi arcade board

Either way, the real problem DD has is that everyone still talks about Miller's Daredevil runs, both the original and Born Again, and it so thoroughly defined what Daredevil should be that every run since then either informed by it or is a deliberate counter-reaction to it (Waid's run). It has made it so there can't really be anything else.
That's a licensed game. It has the same problem that avp, punisher & Cadillac has. It should be way cheaper to relicense D&D though and they're quasi rpgs so it's bound to make money since action games with rpg mechanics seem to be the only shit that zoomers & millenials like.

Here's an actual response.
From what I recall, SNK and Capcom's crossover games were part of a contract between them, which is pretty strange, looking back. Not sure why they made a contract, but in essence, it was something like each company would produce a certain amount of crossovers for each other. Capcom held up their end of the bargain (albeit with a LOT of asset reuse and frankly slapped together games), but SNK had yet to produce an actual fighter that wasn't on a handheld, and they were going through one of their worst periods at the time. Internal power struggles, KOF licensing issues, losing out on the console wars, failing to properly transition to consoles, arcades were dying quickly.
Now as you might know: SNK's sprites are actually pretty detailed for the time. Much more than Capcom's fighters. The main problem was they HAD to make an arcade fighter with all those problems, while trying to be detailed because they had to uphold their standards, annnnd most of the budget went to making new sprites for SVC because obviously they had NO sprites for the Capcom side. To say they had a lack of foresight on this would be an understatement.
So with being pressed for time, the game was cobbled together without any real playtesting and the mechanics are also sloppily put together. It also has a rather strange amount of character choices for the Capcom side, like MMZ Zero, Hugo, and most of the cast being SF characters.
The only upside is that it notoriously has one of the best iterations of Ken, Violent Ken, which still influences some of Ken's appearances in some media to this day, and even being made official in Ultra SF2 for Switch decades later.
You can use the Switch Pro controller (though I haven't tried fightan on it yet, I don't know how the D-Pad goes for fightan, but I fricking LOVE that controller). I'll be on my Deck though.

Man mvc1 and 2 were so unique and playing them with others was an unforgettable experience, especially with oldheads from NYC and Philly. Every time I am reminded of it I get that kind of sad nostalgia that makes it feel like your guts are being ripped out.

tbf, this is how capitalism is supposed to work. If you can just produce shit and suffer no consequences, something is broken in the system. Marvel needing to actually TRY means the system is actually capable of self-correcting due to the market.
This happened with Capcom in the mid-2010s too, where they set way too high of expectations for themselves, it all came crashing down (it didn't, RE6 was one of the best-selling Capcom games ever made, but Capcom was too high on their own supply to see it as a success) and they had to buckle down and you know...actually try to make good games again with more realistic goals.
So what took Capcom and Marvel so long? X-Men '97 finished its whole season and they're only announcing the collection now.
During the mid 2010's Marvel was the hottest shit and Disney had full control of everything, hence the dumb shit like no X-Men in MvC infinite. Now the MCU is in freefall and Disney is desperate to restore faith in whatever way it can.

You joke but take in account that this game had five X-Men characters at launch, additional two free characters only a month after release and Wolverine at the cover front and center. Compare that to Marvel vs Capcom Infinite and other games at the time.

To be fair, Shuma is relatively obscure in the comics, and using an extra slot for a C-tier villain compared to using a more well known one IS pretty dumb on paper. I'm betting Capcom only fought for it because "he looked cool" to them. And I'd have to agree: at least for the sprite representation. I'd have to agree with Marvel that 3 would be slightly improved if they put in a better known character over Shuma.
Shuma-Gorath has some rights issues because the name first appeared in a Conan the Barbarian story which Marvel had the rights to publishing when Shuma-Gorath first appeared in Marvel. Completely irrelevant among Conan the Barbarian, so just the Marvel/Disney guys erring on the side of caution.
Shuma is actually a legal nightmare for Marvel because the name Shuma-Gorath was created by Robert Howard and Heroic Signatures currently hold rights to that name. He hasn't appeared in recent years in the comics and other media. His only recent appearance was in the second Dr. Strange movie under a different name.
As far as I know, they didn't own the ENTIRE rights to X-Men. That's why they were barely mentioned. Sony or whoever owned it...somehow. That's why it was hard to see much of them in actual Marvel games and during the MCU.

God that was such a terrible push on their part ruined Inhumans, tried to kill the X-men literally had a fart cloud caused by Inhuman's that kill mutants, and then when they got X-men back they retconned characters from Inhuman's to X-men.
Are those Arcade 1Up cabinets any good? They seem awfully pricey. I mean not compared to a real cab, but $500 to play one game on a bad LCD screen seems like a lot.
I own the old SF2 one. It's not great and can be pretty cramped if you're trying to do 2 players. I ended up orering a custom control board to increase the distance between P1 and P2 and it worked well enough. I would also heavily recommend a riser as they're pretty short by default and maybe throw in some weight in the back of the cabinet to keep it from moving around too much.
Also if you do get one I would look into customizing it by throwing in a raspberry pi into the box or using a desktop PC (that's what I'm doing to get more power and having more options for emulating more modern fighters).
Also the screen is okay but most people who mod these things seem to replace it with their own setups but I'm too lazy for that so I'm fine with the default one. Newer 1Up setups probably have better quality materials? I dunno

The one with Mojo? Eh yeah, that was fairly weak, but the rest of that episode was great.
Also I wasn't super familiar with Sunspot prior to the show, but he seems pretty cool. Definitely the worst voice actor of the bunch though, it sounded like he was doing a table read seeing the script for the first time. Especially compared to the vets they managed to get back from the original show.

Seriously impressive show, I hope they don't frick it up with the second season.
My only complaint was Magneto's costume. It just looked real dumb compared to everyone else.

It was the costume he wore in...I wanna say the late 60s/early 70s when he was trying to redeem himself. However, it looked dumb then, it looks dumb now.
I figured it was from an older storyline. I only read a few X-Men comics in the 90's, most of what I know about them came from the games and the cartoon. I would have loved to read more, but trying to get my mom to bring me to the comic book shop was like trying to convince her to let me build a rocket in the backyard and blast myself off into space.

Yes it does, it's called the difference between creators who actually give a shit about what they're making vs ones doing it for a paycheck.
Also, it's easy to make good content when you're literally just copypasting the "greatest hits" story arcs from the comics but cutting out the really stupid parts (like everything involving Xavier's sister who was the one behind the Genosha attack in the comics because...dear god his sister is a dumb concept)

...I mean let's be real, the Madelyne Pryor story felt like half a season's worth of material crammed into 2 and a half episodes, that was definitely a little rushed. I wonder if this has to do with the deal Sony/Insomniac have in place with X-Men characters. According to the Insomniac leak from a while back, Sony has exclusive access to X-Men characters till like 2030 and if any X-Men game gets released it can't be released on Xbox.

Fundamentally, you build meter with your point and try to snipe assist with your hyper combo. Assists are very potent in this game so there are multiple ways to snipe them. Other than that, you pretty much chip your opponent out with meters.

Licensing negotiations, I have to assume. Most of these games as well as MvC3 were made back when the guy in charge of Marvel was way more hands-off with what videogames did with their properties (as long as they didn't do outright character assassination). In theory, Magneto should be completely unbeatable as he controls magnetism which is one of the four fundamental concepts of physics. Here's an actual response.
From what I recall, SNK and Capcom's crossover games were part of a contract between them, which is pretty strange, looking back. Not sure why they made a contract, but in essence, it was something like each company would produce a certain amount of crossovers for each other. Capcom held up their end of the bargain (albeit with a LOT of asset reuse and frankly slapped together games), but SNK had yet to produce an actual fighter that wasn't on a handheld, and they were going through one of their worst periods at the time. Internal power struggles, KOF licensing issues, losing out on the console wars, failing to properly transition to consoles, arcades were dying quickly.
Now as you might know: SNK's sprites are actually pretty detailed for the time. Much more than Capcom's fighters. The main problem was they HAD to make an arcade fighter with all those problems, while trying to be detailed because they had to uphold their standards, annnnd most of the budget went to making new sprites for SVC because obviously they had NO sprites for the Capcom side. To say they had a lack of foresight on this would be an understatement.
So with being pressed for time, the game was cobbled together without any real playtesting and the mechanics are also sloppily put together. It also has a rather strange amount of character choices for the Capcom side, like MMZ Zero, Hugo, and most of the cast being SF characters.
The only upside is that it notoriously has one of the best iterations of Ken, Violent Ken, which still influences some of Ken's appearances in some media to this day, and even being made official in Ultra SF2 for Switch decades later.

tbf, this is how capitalism is supposed to work. If you can just produce shit and suffer no consequences, something is broken in the system. Marvel needing to actually TRY means the system is actually capable of self-correcting due to the market.
This happened with Capcom in the mid-2010s too, where they set way too high of expectations for themselves, it all came crashing down (it didn't, RE6 was one of the best-selling Capcom games ever made, but Capcom was too high on their own supply to see it as a success) and they had to buckle down and you know...actually try to make good games again with more realistic goals.

To be fair, Shuma is relatively obscure in the comics, and using an extra slot for a C-tier villain compared to using a more well known one IS pretty dumb on paper. I'm betting Capcom only fought for it because "he looked cool" to them. And I'd have to agree: at least for the sprite representation. I'd have to agree with Marvel that 3 would be slightly improved if they put in a better known character over Shuma.
Shuma-Gorath has some rights issues because the name first appeared in a Conan the Barbarian story which Marvel had the rights to publishing when Shuma-Gorath first appeared in Marvel. Completely irrelevant among Conan the Barbarian, so just the Marvel/Disney guys erring on the side of caution.
Shuma is actually a legal nightmare for Marvel because the name Shuma-Gorath was created by Robert Howard and Heroic Signatures currently hold rights to that name. He hasn't appeared in recent years in the comics and other media. His only recent appearance was in the second Dr. Strange movie under a different name.

I own the old SF2 one. It's not great and can be pretty cramped if you're trying to do 2 players. I ended up orering a custom control board to increase the distance between P1 and P2 and it worked well enough. I would also heavily recommend a riser as they're pretty short by default and maybe throw in some weight in the back of the cabinet to keep it from moving around too much.
Also if you do get one I would look into customizing it by throwing in a raspberry pi into the box or using a desktop PC (that's what I'm doing to get more power and having more options for emulating more modern fighters).
Also the screen is okay but most people who mod these things seem to replace it with their own setups but I'm too lazy for that so I'm fine with the default one. Newer 1Up setups probably have better quality materials? I dunno

The one with Mojo? Eh yeah, that was fairly weak, but the rest of that episode was great.
Also I wasn't super familiar with Sunspot prior to the show, but he seems pretty cool. Especially compared to the vets they managed to get back from the original show.

When the show was first starting and that "Omega-level threat detected" clip was going around, I thought for sure that was going to be the peak of the show. You know, put all the money and effort into the first episode to hook people, and then downhill from there. But nope, almost every episode had at least one moment like that, and somehow they managed to condense multiple story arcs into just a handful of episodes without it feeling rushed or incomplete. Seriously impressive show, I hope they don't frick it up with the second season.
My only complaint was Magneto's costume. It just looked real dumb compared to everyone else.

I figured it was from an older storyline. I only read a few X-Men comics in the 90's, most of what I know about them came from the games and the cartoon. I would have loved to read more, but trying to get my mom to bring me to the comic book shop was like trying to convince her to let me build a rocket in the backyard and blast myself off into space.

It's Street fighter adjacent. Far more so than Darkstalkers anyway. Mortal Kombat, DragonBallz & Street Fighter are the only fighters that switch players give a shit about. Fundamentally, you build meter with your point and try to snipe assist with your hyper combo. Assists are very potent in this game so there are multiple ways to snipe them. Other than that, you pretty much chip your opponent out with meters.
