If I wanna get into The Legend of Heroes, is Trails in the Sky a good starting point? Or should I play the older TLoH games first?

Why the frick would you want to play that rubbish
Cause I'm in the mood for JRPGs and it looks like something I'd like
Play it last. It's bottom of the barrel in terms of being generic as frick and shamelessly unoriginal.
Just play other games in the genre first.
Not that guy but how is it not good?
Your main complaint is that it's "generic" but Dragon Quest is generic as frick and it is consistently excellent.
Its fricking boring, play it and see for yourself.
Because this guy doesnt play any kisekis or any jrpgs. Notice they never name anything specific about the flaws in this series (which there are a lot)
>play the chronologically first game, from a series that has an ongoing story with several arcs, last
Anon, the guy you are quoting is a homosexual but are YOU stupid?
He is telling him to play other series altogether, not other games in the Trails series.
Nah, ignore the TLoH name and just follow the Trails
Also play the PC version, you can get it with the voice acting patch on nyaa
Is it possible to patch the steam versions to have JP audio? I'm mainly planning to play the series on both the deck and PC, so cross-platform cloud saves are gonna be a plus.
I'm planning on playing both Trails in the Sky and Cold Steel if I get hooked, I'm mainly debating on which one to start with to get a better sense of the universe and world-building.
Sky is honestly kind of shit and not really worth playing. It barely has any story and the important shit is explained to you. Cold Steel 1 is basically made for new players and is how the series has been since it came out, so better to start there.
Do the "new 3d games" also have tons of missable stuff? Honestly that's the main reason I couldn't get into Trails in the Sky.
It is, yes, back when i tried patching it though it was a b***h to find the files
Well, i suppose it's possible to download the patched game on Nyaa and transfer the files to the Steam version
Sky is the best starting point unless you’re a braindead zoomie who can’t comprehend playing anything from before the mid-2010s
Got it. Guess I'll start with that.
Have fun with Estelle. She's a pretty good protag, and there's some strongly hinted incest with the co-protag.
Good, now get out of the fricking thread before people start talking about star door 15
Max BP requiring a guide is complete bullshit, and made me drop SC.
That's some poweful autism and its cost you
Play the trails series, skip cold steel, call hahagays dumb Black folk any time you see them. You will eventually see the wisdom in my advice.
We all know Cold Steel is the best starting point.
Cold Steel is the reason I don't care about Trails anymore.
Just play Cold Steel honestly.
The Legend of Heroes is a brand, like Megami Tensei or something. The subseries within it aren't related to each other other than naming scheme and generally not being action RPGs.
boring game
TotS is for people who want a good game with an enjoyable story.
Cold Steel is for zoomers with ADHD.
Shut up you autistic skyboomer. Sky sucks. It is slow as frick and nothing happens. The graphics and art style are terrible. Cold Steel is better in virtually every way. The only thing I give Sky is that it has good music, but Cold Steel has better music.
>muh icky old graphix
>yiiikes artstyle
Yep. Peak zoomie hour
>The graphics
no way homosexual, the monsters are incredibly detailed and have fantastic animation, frick you
not just that, combat and quests are awful in sky. CB and CS arcs is where the series actually starts
The combat peaks with Sky 3rd though
Azure has superior combat, since it's the only game with both the master quartz system, as well as the cast lines.
You can mix and match for days optimising your build more than in any other game in the series.
No, Azure has superior customization, but it shits the bed with balance and outside of two or three fights the game isn't a challenge at all. It's the same issue the Cold Steel games have, except those either outright strip features compared to Azure (sepith count etc.) or just layer extra shit on top to make the game even easier (orders). The only game that tried to mix things up after Azure was Kuro and then they still shit the bed with balancing making it somehow even easier than Cold Steel.
Sky ch 1 is the starting point.
Just play it. Better than the newer ones.
>guys I want to get into this series known for long spanning arcs, world building and continuity
>do I start from chapter 1 or chapter 24?
For once OP's not being a homosexual, he's not talking about starting with Coldsteel he's talking about starting with this
Sky is the starting point story wise
anyone that says to not start the first game in a series with a literal continuous storyline is false flagging and does not have your best interests in mind OP
Like that one shitpost image telling people to start cold steel 3 of all fricking things
>Cold Steel literally recaps everything that has happened
>Is fully 3D as opposed to 2D
>Contains a totally new cast of characters
>The few that come back are reintroduced
>LITERALLY said by the creator to be a great starting point
Anyone recommending you start with Sky is just a delusional boomer who wants you to play the same old ass games as them. Cold Steel is both better and actually modern and won't turn you off from the entire series with its clunky combat, terrible graphics, bad writing, and simplified gameplay.
>2D bad
The absolute state of this board jesus chribadst
What do you gain from baiting people like this?
Honest question
>Bait
Not everything is bait, Jesus Christ. I am sorry that my opinion is different from yours.
Except Cold Steel literally explains to you what happened, that is not even remotely the same.
you're a true Black person
A 2 paragraph summary text dumped on the main menu being used as an alternative to playing the actual game is so beyond left field moronic that I can only assume someone with this opinion is baiting.
who needs to play the games at all I'll just read the plot summary from Wikipedia. fricking boomers actually playing games
>bad writing
You're a fricking joke.
>Anyone recommending you start with Sky is just a delusional boomer
The games got translated in 2012, I'd hardly consider people playing them 11 years ago old.
>>Cold Steel literally recaps everything that has happened
And? Experiencing the full story of the previous games results in a much more impactful experience than a recap could ever do.
said by the creator to be a great starting point
To be fair, thats probably true for cold steel 1, as that game hinges far less on previous games than the sequels do. But skipping pre-cold steel games will absolutely be a terrible idea by the time you reach cold steel 3.
>muh recap
Why would you play cold steel then? Just read a recap lol. Why even play games? Just read recaps. Absolute moronic take. Kys zoomzoom.
>LITERALLY said by the creator to be a great starting point
>implying that's not them lying just to get more sales
Fricking Falcom also said that Reverie is a great starting point in their marketing iirc but I know i'm replying to b8
playing reverie without the context of the previous 9 games has to be like a fricking fever dream. the game's story is confusing even WITH all that context
it's very different from the others and a bit divisive as a result but i love it. hope you like dungeon crawling though.
>hope you like dungeon crawling though
I do, bought myself Labyrinth of Galleria resently, will play it soon too.
I will try these games soon myself tbh, they look strong.
If you start with sky you'll get bored immediately. Play from Cold Steel saga which has the most refined gameplay of the series
I like watching tiktok by the way
Youtube is boring and drags too much
WHY IS MY PRESENT A BOY?
STUPID BIMBO
>Wins every fight
>Loses every cutscene
It's great anon. It just gets shitposted a lot on Ganker.
Older ones are pretty much unconnected from what I've read
Start with Sky or whichever one looks best to you.
Start with sky, it's a little slow at first but I think it really gets you into the mindset these games want you to be in
the npcs make the games what they are along with the story, cold steel just doesn't really get you into that way of thinking and when you dont care about the classmates it definitely affects how you feel about the whole series and the returning areas and NPCs
>Second Chapter is $20
>"meh, I'll just pirate it"
>every torrent is slow af with only 1 or 2 seeders
Get better trackers
man I forget that site has games. I always consider it just for anime. thanks.
>GOG
lel
you could have just got it from gog-games
>torrents
>2023
lmao, forgot to ask tiktok for trend confirmation
Don't. Save yourself the trouble.
Enjoy. Played through Sky/Crossbell/CS a couple years ago and it's now one of my favourite series. Wish there were more games that built up over like 10 games instead of each game in a series being standalone and not related to the other games (e.g. FF/Persona/SMT/Tales etc.).
Cold steel gave me battered wife syndrome. They build up a hype story with single digit games and completely butcher the conclusion games. Im already three games deep and cant take the motherfricking hahas anymore, but the sunk cost is too great not to play the rest
oh man, wait til you see the absolute shitshow of 4.
Who the frick even understands what torrenting is? Just have a nice day or download shit like a normal human being.
have a nice day.
>edgy enough to tell random strangers on the Internet to kill themselves
>too homosexual to actually quote them
Sad.
KYS
I vaguely recall someone posting a webm of a character from this series with RIDICULOUSLY large breasts and a great ass. Who could that be and what game does she appear in?
She had blue-ish hair? I think?
Rixia Mao probably.
First appearence is trails from zero.
Yes! That's the one.
Holy shit, they are even bigger than I remember. Are these modded in any way?
That one is a fan made model.
then again even her actual in game model is still big
Thanks for the input m8
Wiki tells me she appears in Trails of Cold Steel 2 so I guess I could start with Cold Steel 1 so I won't be completely lost then.
She first appears in Zero and you'll be completely lost if you start with any game but Trails in the Sky FC.
But people in this very thread said Cold Steel 1 was a good starting point...
She looks nice too. This series has some very good titty monsters.
>But people in this very thread said Cold Steel 1 was a good starting point...
They're gaslighting you. The best starting point is the start of the series. If you don't care about the story you can start with the first game of any arc, but at the same time, if you don't care about story, this series is not for you.
>But people in this very thread said Cold Steel 1 was a good starting point...
it's an okay starting point if you're a zoom zoom that can't handle 2d graphics or doesn't have a PC. You won't be lost until CS3
Cold Steel is a great starting point...if you want to be utterly baffled at what the frick is going on and who the frick are these characters by CS3. Cold Steel is near the end of the series timeline, why the flying frick at rolling donuts would you even think to start there?
Just play the games in order. The first few games were designed for the PSP/VITA and are quick to finish with an honestly good story and decent battle systems.
>PC exclusives were designed for a nonexistent handheld
huh
I'm playing the Trails in the Sky trilogy on my VITA in English right now, you moron.
So how does that mean a game that came out before the PSP existed was designed for the PSP? You're also playing a strictly worse version, moron. Should have bought a deck instead of a dead handheld with no games.
Are you 6-years-old? You are, seriously, 6-years-old.
Not an argument.
I don't argue with 6-year-olds.
You don't argue with anyone, considering you threw a temper tantrum like a child when someone pointed out that your post was objectively an incorrect statement.
I accept your concession.
Please don't recommend the vita version
I started this series 2 months ago, played non-stop through the whole series until CS1, which burned me out with the shitty highschool melodrama, bloated cast and the story being nothing but setup. Sky1 is also mostly setup, but it's done way better.
Start with Sky FC like a normal person, you get to appreciate the improvements made along the way, and the story is way more unique and hooks you in better than CS1.
Besides, Azure is the best in the series (best gameplay, best story), so go through them chronologically (Sky1,2,3, then Zero and Azure).
If you only care about the ongoing story, you can skip Sky3, as it's just additional context or backstory for existing characters. Still a good game tho.
>until CS1, which burned me out with the shitty highschool melodrama, bloated cast and the story being nothing but setup. Sky1 is also mostly setup, but it's done way better.
Good thing you dropped it then since the rest of the game is just setup for CS2, which is just setup for CS3, which then just sets up CS4, which shits the bed.
Honestly I love this series but I would have written it off entirely if I started with Cold Steel 1. That game just gives you such a bad first impression.
>But people in this very thread said Cold Steel 1 was a good starting point...
She is busty in game too. But don't forget about our instructor Sara Valstein's breasts too!
I guess you mean Rixia.
This entire series is pure TRASH! The most popular game in the series was a replacement for Persona. Yet now there's a lot of spinoffs, so this series isn't even needed anymore.
If you have the time sure. Just know they are probably the weakest in falcom's library. IIRC 1-3 got psp remakes so id try there first.
This is the only Legend of Heroes game I've played and I wont play anything these.
You are playing the vanilla Dos version right?
Honestly this is a good game. Even with the localization being bad I ended up liking the characters and the ending is actual kino like you wouldn't believe
MC literally jumps into the afterlife to bring his dead best friend back so he gets the girl AND his brother-like best friend for a total happy ending
Is there an alternate version of gagharv or is the only route to just emulate the NA versions that are available?
The PSP versions are your only options if you don't know moon, you could hope eventually someone will retranslate them or translate the other versions of Gagharv but otherwise PSP is all you have
Thank you for the info, doubt any translations will come tbh.
if you are a hardcore jrpg fan then yes, if not start with cold steel and ignore the rest
Trails in the Sky
Trails in the Sky SC
Trails in the Sky the 3rd (most say this is optional)
Trails from Zero
Trails to Azure
The Legend of Nayuta: Boundless Trails
Trails of Cold Steel
Trails of Cold Steel II
Trails of Cold Steel III
Trails of Cold Steel IV
Trails into Reverie
>(most say this is optional)
No they don't, a few morons say that and nobody else.
Probably the same morons pushing Cold Steel as a starting point since that's all I heard here a few years back.
Oh yeah, secondaries seem really eager to get people to play the worst game in the series for some reason.
anyone who says 3rd is optional is a fricking idiot
>See an honest to God video game thread on Ganker
>Enter
>It's just people flinging shit back and forth
Not sure what I was expecting but it beats the AI and advertiser threads I guess.
Welcome to trails threads
these threads are always like this because for some reason theres spergs who are eternally asshurt about these games and enter every single thread about them just to shit them up
have a nice day you stupid fricking homosexual. Go cry about it on /lgbt
moron
I like FC more than SC.
Agreed. First Chapter is really nicely paced but Second is just monotonous and bloated, and the gameplay isn't as good as 3rd to back it up. SC is the most formulaic Trails game next to Cold Steel 3.
Coldsteel 1 simply has way too many characters for its own good. With the additional time it gets better in the future games but as far as setups go it's easily the worst title in the series.
>ReaBlack folk smearing shit all over the walls first post in
I don't know how Ganker manages to be more of a self-insert Black person board than Ganker, it's honestly impressive.
I'm gonna blow your mind here anon: most of the Cold Steel fans on Ganker are crossboarder secondaries from Ganker and /m/
This makes no sense. Gacha games are the biggest cesspools of self-insert shit that goes beyond anything Ganker related.
Start with Sky. The first chapter is slow world building kino which will pay off with time.
Make sure you mod in Japanese voice acting in the Sky trilogy. Search Evo voice acting mod.
Don't mod the Evo soundtrack, it's worse.
Play first three sky games. Then play Zero/Azure.
Cold steel is where the series goes downhill. Cold Steel shills are either baiting you or are morons that have never played a jrpg before or watched any anime before, therefore they are impressed by the shittier plot and story moments.
Sky trilogy and zero/Azure writing is much better execution
Is Reverie even worth looking at?
it's peak soul
CS is overhated and a lot of the shit people cry about in CS was also present in Sky and/or Crossbell. It's my least favorite arc so far but people who act like it's unplayable are being ridiculous and just pandering to the consensus.
>CS is overhated and a lot of the shit people cry about in CS was also present in Sky and/or Crossbell.
Neither of these things are true, CS is unduly popular because it got popular with zoomers with no frame of reference and nobody has ever made a convincing argument for your latter point.
It's not unplayable just noticeably and significantly worse than the previous arcs in every measure.
>overhated
Not hated enough actually
All people do on Ganker is b***h about it when it's not even nearly that bad so yes it is overhated. It's by no means amazing or anything but people here act overly dramatic about it.
>All people do on Ganker is b***h about it
Probably because every thread has morons giving bad advice to new players to start with the objectively worst arc of the series.
> It's by no means amazing
No, it's pretty bad actually, which is why it's hated
Oh look it's the moronic "muh games are all the same!" centrist.
Do you have any actual examples of the games being exactly the same? Oh wait you don't because you post this in every thread and get BTFO in every thread because all of your examples are false equivalences.
I didn't say they're all the same. None of the CS games are even in my top 5 of the series. I'm just saying the people who axt like CS is unplayable and has nothing enjoyable about it are just being dramatic and pandering to the hivemind.
Nah you post the same shit in every thread. "All the things you complain about are in the past games!" yet every single fricking time you get BTFO whenever you try to explain your moronic point.
I don't give a shit about your schizophrenic delusions dude.
Then stop posting your debunked shitpost in every fricking thread, you stupid homosexual. You're not smart for only kinda hating a shit game.
Keep making posts about how some dumb anime game ruined your life or whatever like a overly dramatic woman then you moron. morons like you obsessed with Cold Steel have actual fricking brain damage.
Nobody has made any such posts in this thread. This is why nobody takes your homosexual posts seriously, stupid Black person. Everyone just said it's a shit starting point (objective fact), it's worse than the other games (objective fact), and that you have to have brain damage to recommend it as a starting point to anyone but a rabid otaku whose sole metric of quality is how many school uniforms are in the game (objective fact). Then your enlightened fedora-wearing ass came in to say "it's not that bad guys the other games did stuff too!" while refusing to elaborate on that because you know your argument would be ripped to shreds like it always is.
>nobody actually helps OP and posts the guide
we need an update chart
Between The Legend of Heroes and Ys, which series is worth getting into?
Mighty Obstacle from Ys 6 is pretty dope so I'm leaning towards latter.
I never cared for Ys. It's way too simple and braindead and lacking any real customization to make it a real worthwhile action rpg series for me. Other action rpgs just do it way better. Still the two series arent really comparable.
Other action RPGs are piss easy and have shit bosses, Ys clears them all easily.
If I want customization I'll play a turn based RPG like Trails or Dark Souls.
Ys is braindead as frick there is 0 depth to any of it I have no idea why pretend like its some hardcore series
Oh, because I don't play games on super weenie hut jr. difficulty, that would be why.
It's braindead even on the high difficulties what? All that changes is your health and damage taken it doesnt give the combat more depth.
Oh sorry, I mistakenly assumed you'd actually played the games, my bad. Kill yoruself then, that's all I need to say.
Oh a boss gets an extra mechanic big fricking deal you still just mash x theres no actual skill to any of it. God you gays are so sensitive.
It's alright anon, I'm sure someone might be tricked into thinking you actually played the games someday.
Lol alright moron keep coping.
Don't worry anon, I'm sure your 4" penis is big to some girl out there, and she definitely won't think less of you for playing every videogame on easy mode.
I’m playing my first Trails game right now - Cold Steel. I’m not impressed. It plays like a mobile game and you’ll go through an entire chapter (a couple hours) where the story is just “these two characters in your party argue a lot.”
I put all the CS games on my wishlist, but unless this gets a LOT better after the 50% mark, I’m not playing the others.
my dude you started from the sixth and weakest game in the series.
>I started in the very middle of the series with the worst game in it, and I'm not enjoying it!
Wow anon who would have thought? Maybe next time don't listen to your moronic waifugay friend and start with the first game instead.
>I’m playing my first Trails game right now
>Cold Steel
The series that ruined Trails. Play the Sky Trilogy then the Crossbell Duology and forget about the series. Don't forget to use the EVO portraits to make Estelle less ugly.
>make estelle less ugly
Frick you Black person. If someone says something as moronic as this, juts ignor their whole opinion, OP. Play Cold Steel.
i'm 100% serious, the worst part of the crossbell games for me are the portraits and the EVO versions of sky uses the same shitty art style. i'm glad they got rid of it in cs.
they do, but each game makes them harder to miss, giving you some kind of marker or a warning before a point of no return
This series has an amazing story (for a JRPG anyway) but atrocious gameplay.
Open menu, select ability, select enemy. Repeat 500000x times.
How do people enjoy this?
Cold Steel is Pure KINO tbh. It is an Ernst Junger story.
good morning i love all trails games, even my least favourite
same I dont know why people are always so mad all the time in these threads i get we're on Ganker but still
Xenogays doomposting other jrpgs
I hate them
I like Trails but it's genwunners the skyboomers are lame
Tio ToT
it depends on how much time you want to waste
Terrible series for autistic waifugays. 12+ games with a combined total of half a game's worth of story. All their games for the past 10 years have had cosmetic and pay to win DLCs for $120 - $180. It's trash, the people who play it are trash, and you are trash.
Would you want a cute Graalsritter girl as next arc's protagonist?
based ries poster. gralsritter or not, i would really like to see another (cute) girl protagonist for a change, it's been too long.
IS there a fan translation patch for this Sky Trilogy?
I play it all in order until Cold Steel 4, a warning, don't waste your time with this series unless you really have nothing better to play and/or absolute love shonen animes especially the generic type, the world had some serious potential but that is never achieved and only made worse with each game released, the characters are flat out generic troupes and nothing beyond that, the OST is good at times but nothing special and FALCOM is maybe the laziest game company i have ever seen and they are shameless about it.
and there it is, the weebgoys drop the pretense and start crying over a jrpg being "too anime"
i don't mean a jrpg being too anime, but i do mind it been generic. You are free to eat that shit all you want, just don't lie about it.
you can just admit you got filtered by kino instead
oh im sure shit is "kino" for imbeciles like you.
Estelle a cute
Only the EVO version.
You can go back to Sky later. CS3 is the preferred starting point.
The autism in that image is overwhelming.
Finished today Trails in the Sky SC. It was KINO. Really liked city in final chapter, got vibes from Xeno games when explored it. Now will start third game, I hope it will deliver too.
Any game is a good starting point tbh, unless you have a poor memory. You will attach all the stories together anyway if you end up playing all the games. Simple as.
I think its time to admit that shouting worldbuilding worldbuilding, doesn't excuse the abysmal pacing and padding of these games. Especially in CS.
?
Worldbuilding is a meme tbh. Cold Steel is simply high-octane KINO.
Ok, I just booted it up.
Can someone guide me this 'quartz' thing?
You are right at the tutorial to it...
Filtered me hard.
Just choose them for the effects they give and try to stack the same colors/elements in a line for higher tier spells of that element.
The rest is left as an exercise for the reader.
Just equip what you have and don't bother crafting more with the limited sepith you get throughout the game. Doing quests will give you powerful quartz in a steady pace. Just use your sepith to buy more lines.
i didn't get it at first, just keep playing, you'll figure it out. it's not really complicated but you kind of just need to see it for yourself. basically, for example adding a fire quartz will increase the fire value in your orbment (only within that line) and allow for stronger fire arts. the point is to combine certain values in order to get the arts you want (you can find them in your notebook). don't stress about it, it's not like it matters early in the game when you have very few quartz and your options are limited.
Now the game keeps crashing, I installed all the EVO mods from nyaa.
i only recommend the voice mod, the others are worse than the original imo. i also remember having some issues with it, the menus didn't work well. i think i just reinstalled them and fixed it. follow the guide on the steam forums to make sure you're doing everything correctly.
What does she want me to do? She keeps repeating the same thing.
Finally cleared the tutorial.
This is game is hard.
put in the strongest you have available, don't mix match physical and magic (craft and arts) damage, don't use the expensive magic as it's a meme. That's it, it's a flawed system and was unsurprisingly phased out later on.
im not a big jrpg guy and really enjoyed FC and SC and would highly recommend them (not as much the 3rd but it was still good)
im stuck on trails from zero right now, for whatever reason it's just not clicking with me. think im like 15 hours in
Can you mod the Steam version to have Japanese text?
it doesn't come with it? i know that you can mod in JP voices but i assumed text was already included. i also plan on playing it in JP this way but didn't look too much into it yet
Steam page only says this, so I assume it doesn't. Tried to see if there was a separate Japanese version of the game but couldn't find it, so if there is one it's region locked.
well that sucks
Tbh, arts were not much useful for me. I only used some of them like healing or speed buff. Maybe also Earth Guard/Wall in boss fights.
i feel like every game tweaks them further to try to make them more useful to largely mixed results. in sky i used buffs fairly often but in later games not even that. with the addition of the order system in cs3, they might as well could've removed most buff arts entirely honestly, although at least the break meter made offensive arts slightly more useful, but crafts are still the better option 90% of the time. even in reverie they're still trying to figure than one out.
i found arts useful for large AOE attacks late game. in sky 3rd just bringing 2 characters to cast arts with the -50% cast reduction made clearing encounters go so much faster
Play the Cold Steel games.
Older games are boring boomer trash.
Arts are required for Ao nightmare tbh. As well as other games.
Comfy
?si=Buu9cBI9FinJrzSO
one of singa's best. the mishelam segment just before the finale is peak kino and one of my favorite moments in the series
What kind of build should I make for Lloyd in Reverie?
Just play Kuro
If people are claiming that Kky is the best writing in the series, then I feel justified in stopping after Sky SC, cause that was some of the worst slop anime naruto shit writing I've seen in a jrpg in a long time.
it's good, not the greatest. but yeah, it only goes downhill from there really. there's some interesting moments spread out over the series but the writing just becomes more deeply flawed as the series goes on.
What's your top 3 jrpgs?
>Kky
?
Why doesn't Reverie include Japanese audio in PSN version?
