Final fantasy seven is light-years above all other games. You had to play it in the nineties as a little kid for the maximum experience.

        It got mogged by FF6

why are SNES worshippers so delusional and cult-like?

I will never understand why people have such high regard for FF6. The game is an absolute chore until the very end.

If it was only relevant in the nineties then it wasn't light-years, or even normal years ahead of anything else by definition. Needing to be a kid just means you have to be incapable of criticizing anything. I don't expect you to know any better because you are a FF7 fan in 2023.

I said maximum experience. Back then on a crt, combined with a child's pov, ff7 felt lifelike.
Aside from graphics, tifa would be your first crush, you would fear sephiroth, Jenova would creep the absolute frick out of you. A kids imagination amplifies the intensity of it all. Sorry if you missed the train.

If Konami released any Silent hill game from the original 4 today and did a lazy as frick remake where it's the same exact game but in a new engine. They would instantly win GOTY

I played it for the first time a few months ago. It was not as enjoyable an experience as I would have expected.

I guess it's one of those games that are concidered good for a large part due to the time period when it was released.

FFVII. Even when MGS was out it was still seen as the best game on the system, what with Sephiroth winning all of the online character battle polls and things like that.

MGS1 arguably has the best voice acting of any game ever made

MGS1 has much better graphics than FF7, what are you talking about? All of FF7's budget went into the FMVs. Meanwhile all of MGS's cutscenes are in-engine. It's a lot more impressive for its time.

aside from the codec calls and the stock footage you mean?

          Anonymous

Yes. The stock footage makes up a tiny portion of the game, and the codec calls are no worse than FF7's endless text boxes. Not to mention, unlike FF7, MGS is fully voice acted.

Are you suggesting that the boxy MGS1 environments, as they are in the original PS1 version with the wobbling textures, look better than the pre-rendered backdrops in FF7?

          Anonymous

You're not putting it into its proper context. In terms of full 3D games, MGS is one of the best looking on the PSX, and one of the best of that generation. The footprints in the snow, the characters' breath in the cold air, really good animations, great environment design, etc. It has a ton of atmosphere. FF7's graphics are just lego people running on top of jpegs. Yes, those jpegs do look really nice a lot of the time, but in terms of overall graphical fidelity for the time, MGS wins by a fricking mile. The only better looking games were on the N64.

Final Fantasy for having a lot of choice and routes. Even if it's four homies in a row, you spend alot of time with the characters that you interact with something that mgs kind of lacks.

MGS1 has a more specific audience. It's for boys who like cool commandos doing cool shit on the battlefield, and even within that audience, it can alienate a lot of with its, uh, "stylistic" dialogue. It can also get quite difficult in places. FF7 has a much wider appeal, I think. Anyone can enjoy the music, the visuals, and the accessible story about saving the world, and almost anyone can complete it if they have the time. Remember that a lot of girls played FF7 too.

yeah, mgs is such a niche experience, that's why every game after added stealth segments

final fantasy 7 is just an accessible read-the-screen thrillride with music. wish mgs had music.

and how much better would mgs be if it had visuals?

FF7 would have been even more popular objectively, but both would be major system sellers. I always hear people say the PS1 was particularly popular because it appealed to a more mature audience but it seemed like most people who rembered having one were definitely kids.

FF7 had 100 million in marketing in the United States, and still got outsold by 5 other N64 games that year. However FF7 was hugely loved by game journalists even when they all said GoldenEye was the most well designed game of the year.

As as impartial 2003 Zoomer, I will say MGS is superior. FF7 is good, but it gets mogged by FF9 and Xenogears. MGS stil holds up great, and would be great even by modern standards. The gameplay and cinematics are also better.

MGS1 stomps in story, music, visuals, memorability, bosses, villains and replay value. Not a single character from FF7 is as well written as the best ones from MGS1 (Naomi, Snake, Liquid, Meryl, Ocelot) even the Colonel is compelling
