Good X2, it already had a whole decade to itself with Intelligent Systems constantly busting nuts to it in the 3DS and Switch Eras and Sakurai shilling them in Smash, it’s time to put it to rest now and go back to how the series was in the 2000s or even the 90s when it used to be Japan exclusive.

It's their way of floating by without needing to change, basically to shut up shareholders for the moment. They need to be thinking about what next though since half of these things they've already been doing.

      >mobile
already done since 2015, most have failed except for a few gachas
      >merchandise
already been done, can see them leaning more into it
      >theme park
this is new, yet to see how it turns out, also heavily location dependent
      >visual content
this is new, yet to see if it will set the world on fire outside of the Mario movie and whether their visual content will carry people into their games, outside of children.

What they're clearly trying to do here is imitate what the Pokemon Company has already been doing since the late 90s. Games, merch, movies etc... all feeding into each other to create a huge multimedia empire. The issue is with Pokemon it caused a downfall in the quality of games.

        >The issue is with Pokemon it caused a downfall in the quality of games.
The second they start churning out games to coincide with merch/movies like Pokemon does, they're fricked.

          Anonymous

They sort of already are churning out games then "completing" them later, they're just very smart about which games they do it with. Like every Mario spin off since 2015, Splatoon, Animal Crossing. They don't do it with their huge prestige games like 2D and 3D Mario, Zelda or Smash Bros for example. Because they know that 90% of people who own a Switch mostly play those mainstream IPs then move on. So people won't notice the problem until it extends to those, even then possibly not, as we see with Pokemon, people mostly don't care.

The first two sort of apply to Metroid Dread, but not the third. The games will never be particularly mainstream on account of it being a sci-fi pseudo-horror franchise. The average tendie doesn't respond well to anything that doesn't have a colorful cartoon and/or anime aesthetic.

The IP needs to become good. The success of the movies showed that people do want the franchise to be good or at least it means there is interest in it for sure. The problem though is the games are routinely such complete ass that its damaged the franchise even resulting in poor game sales. Yet clearly the IP is still very popular. People just don't have faith in Sega and Sonic Team for good reason. They don't even know how to make great games with the IP.

Except you wouldn't have to say goodbye to them, they would just have to be released in a complete state instead of announced for no reason 10 years before being released

Apparently Sega wants Sonic to surpass Mario, anyone surprised they are NOW starting to have this confidence? What could they do to even get on par with Mario?

                >Crazier things have happened before
There is zero chance of Sonic ever surpassing Mario at this point. Had the Mario movie flopped Sonic could have claimed the bragging rights of movie fame next to Mario but they can't now. And Mario games are in an absolutely different universe of success compared to Sonic. The latest game sold pathetic numbers in its first week.

How fricking out of touch can these clowns be? The only time Sonic was more popular than Mario was for a pretty brief period of time all the way back in the early 90's. And even then its pretty easy to debate that fact anyways. Its a lot more likely they were both neck and neck for the top crown with Sonic maybe having a good solid year or two of more fame for sure than Mario. Sad to see how out of touch these clowns really are then. Its like they don't realize the shit they've been pumping out the past 2, nearly 3 decades now.

                Nintendo is also Japanese lmao

What is your point? I meant the japs at Sega clearly not Nintendo.

                Anonymous

Sonic will never be more popular than Mario simply because Mario's A to B run and jump platforming style has more mass appeal than a momentum physics based platformer with multiple paths and a focus on time attacking. Simple as that. Same reason that Donkey Kong will never be as popular as Mario.

I like the concept of Sonic better though. The proper 2D games at least. They carry the heart and soul of what Sonic is supposed to be about. Mario is cool to but I feel like his games got even better in 3D while for Sonic its the opposite.

Donkey Kong Country was more popular than Mario World, in fact, Mario World underperformed because Sega and Sonic were kicking the SNES ass until DKC was released.

                Anonymous

Yes they were both more popular than Mario for a short while. But in the long term, mass appeal and as simple gameplay as possible is what sells the most in the modern 2D platformer space clearly.

Yeah Castlevania doesn't seem like the greatest fit with Nintendo. Not that I think they'd ruin it absolutely but it doesn't seem like its in line with their style of games and how they do it. So something I think would get lost in translation to so speak. Not that Konami is any better in fact they are worse. Megaman is a much better fit or Sonic.
