What did you do that they liked

I gave details that kept them thinking without being blatant.
An important tip is to always have your players thinking. It keeps them engaged and makes the world feel more alive.

What kind of treasure did you give them? Did they have any random encounters while they were traveling? How many fatalities were there in the dungeon?

      Anonymous

They found a silver ring that is two paws coming together, it has nine charges and gives the character an advantage roll whenever performing a stealth check.

Random encounters are counterproductive if you are simply rolling to determine if the characters encounter combat. It tends to drag the game. That doesn’t mean that the players shouldnt encounter what seems like a random encounter but typically the combat your characters faces are tied to your over arching story in some compacity.

Incorrect. Basic Fantasy with modifications. The advantage/disadvantage system is taken from 5e because it is excellent and the only thing worth acknowledging in 5e.

            Teach me this old magic.

              Anonymous

All skills attempts use a difficulty scale(D20):

              5 = easy
              10 = moderator
              15 = hard
              20 = hardest

The players are given the difficulty ahead of time before rolling.

That's the most uninteresting magical item I've ever seen.
Give your players items so they can do cool shit, not 'try to be a thief' 9 times

          Anonymous

This is an adequate magic item for a low level character. It is simple, very useful but limited. It also conjures wonder in how it became to be. Your magic items aesthetic should always feel like there is some interesting backstory to them.

            Anonymous

The aesthetic is fine, it's just that it's a minute bonus that you can only use 9 times.
If you wanna roll with the cat theme why not make it negate all footstep noise, or at least have some sort of guaranteed effect 9 times.
You don't give your players wands that sometimes succeed in casting a spell, and have limited attempts, do you?

              Anonymous

It takes all kinds of power levels for all types of items to make a fantasy world. Someday they will get their wand, hopefully.

If you need to ask why someone is fat, unlike myself, you probably lack any understanding of health and proper diet, therefore making you more likely to be fat one here.

        >If you hate promiscuity, that means you want to do it too but are mad that you can't
NTA, but that has no basis in reality. It's just a gaslighting self-defense mechanism people use when others have legitimate issues or criticisms.

They are insinuating it is bad to be fat. I am simply stated the obvious. If that is too difficult for you to understand you will struggle at being a competent GM.

            >They are insinuating it is bad to be fat. I am simply stated the obvious. If that is too difficult for you to understand you will struggle at being a competent GM.
They were primarily insinuating that you were fat. Instead of just saying "I'm not fat" you used a retort to try to "win" and get under their skin. However your retort was nonsensical and fell flat, as I pointed out.

Furthermore, their question was rhetorical, being nothing more than an insult. That makes your attempt to insult them for not understanding how people get fat even more pathetic.

And now that you know responding to a rhetorical question literally makes you look like a moron, I have to ask. Why are you such a homosexual?

That is a rule you made up to set up a trap and fulfill your narcissistic desire to get the last word, and to declare yourself the victor. Get professional help. You are even more moronic than the person you are talking to.

          >le everything is le projection
Nobody claimed that everything is projection. Nobody claimed that merely hating something means you are projecting. These are nothing but your strawmen, yet you are so lacking in awareness that you immediately accuse others of saying things that have no basis on reality. Your own post has no basis in reality! You just pulled it right out of your ass!
After that, you imply that a criticism is legitimate, when it again has no basis in reality!

I can see why you go on autistic, irrelevant rants when you get a whiff of a projection accusation. Like how a criminal on the run is quick to panic whenever he hears a siren, you are quick to cope whenever someone nearby might be getting exposed. You project often after all, so it might be exposing you!

For a forum dedicated to “traditional games”, it is disappointing and incredibly telling that people here don’t wish to draw from the wealth of knowledge that I provide to help them become world class GM’s. Clearly you all just come here to work on what is a lack of dignity and self-respect and only try to offend each other like infantile half-wits.
Well, I have waste enough time.
Enjoy your “traditional games” and missed opportunities.

I've been wanting to get into GMing since the end of the last year, but still haven't found the players for it. At best a couple of people sign up, but when I try again some time later, they don't respond or are no longer interested.
How do you reliably overcome player scarcity?

      Anonymous

You can’t force what isn’t there. You should encourage people within your social circle to be players. Pay attention to which of your friends enjoy the aspects of an RPG. People who really enjoy reading or a certain genre of movies, playing board games are usually good targets. Also, in all seriousness, get off this website. You need to go out and make friends with faces.
      Good luck!

Should I force the spotlight on players that do not take it?
In a group of 6 there are these two players that created agency-free characters with almost 0 backstory.
Having two people that are straight up doing less than the others at the table feels wrong and as the DM I feel I should be doing something about it.
But on the other hand, should I? I mean, the other players are actively doing stuff and have given me hooks to work with. Why not reward them with the attention that they deserve instead of trying to bring the others on level?
And what if I give them attention and they do nothing with it? From what I've seen by playing with this group for years we are a bunch of narcissistic bastards that do not really care about each other backstories and if nothing at least amusing comes out of this I would just have wasted everybody's time.

      Anonymous

To give the players that have already put in little effort, less attention, will eventually just chase them out of the group. You will need to do some “hand holding” with these players to feel out what they enjoy about playing an RPG. Is it just combat? Do they like just being around other people and socializing and dont really care about the game? What are some of their simple pleasures they enjoy IRL? What struggles they have faced IRL? What does their job entail IRL? Either way, you can work with this by finding out more about these players and applying what you personally know about them and loosely placing them into the RPG world. If these players don’t have a backstory, it still works! use what you know about them IRL to slowly form a backstory throughout sessions and incorporate it all into the game. Pick up on their cues, what gives them a visceral response IRL will do the same in an RPG.

The players with backstories are already invested in their characters so you wouldn’t need to reward them with additional loot. By them learning more about their past through various accomplishments will be just as satisfying to them because they are already invested in their characters.

        Anonymous

Not him but it depends on why these players aren’t so active. If they are shy hand holding is good but if they don’t care about the game it’s best to ban them from the game. People like that generally bring down the game.

True! It does beg the question, why would they even play?

I have a couple questions from one GM to another.
    >What are you running?
    >How long have you been running your current campaign?
    >What’s the setting like?
    >What’s the PCs in the party like?
    >What are your players like?

I’m actually about to end a year and a half long Conan 2d20 campaign myself next sunday. It will be the first long campaign that I managed to actually end. For two of my three players this was their first actual RPG campaign as well.

      Anonymous

      >What are you running?
      Basic Fantasy with advantage/disadvantage

      >How long have you been running your current campaign?
10 sessions in, approx 45 hours total.

      >What’s the setting like?
Presently medieval with low magic but that will all change.

      >What’s the PCs in the party like?
Very fleshed out. I asked for a paragraph max on their backstories and all of them gave me 3/4 of a page.

      >What are your players like?
One is a veteran player and the other two are brand new. They are all enthusiastic and have vivid imaginations.

Congrats on your campaign! You are all lucky to have found each other. A committed game group is hard to find.

How does golds as EXP work?

Gold/magic items do not grant a character additional experience. Bonus experience is best provided by heroic actions and general good role playing.
