i work in IT so i have some experience with this subject
windows defender is mostly good enough for a typical end user in a home environment, although if you're downloading a lot of new pirate releases you're in a high risk category and may want to consider something better.
if you look at e.g. av-comparatives, you'll see windows defender is slightly worse than the competition but not by much. the bigger problem with it is that it's more resource-heavy than the competition, although substantially less annoying (most av suites out of the box will pop up all sorts of annoying shit that most users don't need to see)
as far as free shit, use avira or maybe a stripped down avg with the bullshit turned off/not installed. for paid shit, eset or bitdefender. all of the above will typically have a lower gaming impact.
if you think you have an active malware infection that your av didn't find, on another computer throw malwarebytes on a flash drive and rename it to svchost.exe (some viruses monitor the process list and deliberately obfuscate themselves if they see a virus scanner active), then boot your infected computer into safe mode, plug the flash drive in, and run malwarebytes in scan mode. malwarebytes has an extremely good detection rate at the cost of throwing up a higher number of false positives (e.g. shit that's fine but it thinks is bad).
if you know what you're doing, most hit and run malware infections can be detoothed fairly easily just by booting into safe mode, figuring out how they're starting, and deleting whatever startup method it uses (there are like 4-5 common ways malware tends to start itself up from a cold boot). sysinternals autoruns is helpful for this, although you can easily frick shit up with it if you don't know what you're doing.

It's often not worth it for companies to pursue pirates because they're not getting basically any money from them and the more steps it takes the more bothersome it is for them. Sometimes they might commit to make someone an example though.
But mostly companies do not care, when consumers accepted Denuvo and always online games, the publishers won since the vast majority of losses come in the first weeks post release, and no denuvo game is getting cracked in that time

They are mostly fine but not entirely malware free since anyone can upload. Just make sure you run the exes and dlls through virustotal and check their behavior before running them on your machine.

i work in IT so i have some experience with this subject
windows defender is mostly good enough for a typical end user in a home environment, although if you're downloading a lot of new pirate releases you're in a high risk category and may want to consider something better.
if you look at e.g. av-comparatives, you'll see windows defender is slightly worse than the competition but not by much. the bigger problem with it is that it's more resource-heavy than the competition, although substantially less annoying (most av suites out of the box will pop up all sorts of annoying shit that most users don't need to see)
as far as free shit, use avira or maybe a stripped down avg with the bullshit turned off/not installed. for paid shit, eset or bitdefender. all of the above will typically have a lower gaming impact.
if you think you have an active malware infection that your av didn't find, on another computer throw malwarebytes on a flash drive and rename it to svchost.exe (some viruses monitor the process list and deliberately obfuscate themselves if they see a virus scanner active), then boot your infected computer into safe mode, plug the flash drive in, and run malwarebytes in scan mode. malwarebytes has an extremely good detection rate at the cost of throwing up a higher number of false positives (e.g. shit that's fine but it thinks is bad).
if you know what you're doing, most hit and run malware infections can be detoothed fairly easily just by booting into safe mode, figuring out how they're starting, and deleting whatever startup method it uses (there are like 4-5 common ways malware tends to start itself up from a cold boot). sysinternals autoruns is helpful for this, although you can easily frick shit up with it if you don't know what you're doing.

yea like i said, it's common for malware to scan the active process list for known antivirus software and to unload and hide itself when the av comes online. that's why if you're scanning with mbam, you rename the executable to svchost.exe, this fools most common malware tools.
something like an APT won't be fooled by that, but your typical end user won't deal with that shit, it's highly targeted and the authors make a concerted effort to keep it off any computer that isn't a target (because the goal is for it to remain undetected on target computers; being noisy and hitting a lot of unintended targets makes it more visible and easier for white hats to analyze).
