But why would a random sapient Ghoul be so distinct thst he would be called THE GHOUL in a world where normal ghouls are literally your next door neighbours?

        Don't see the issue tbh

          Anonymous

Obviously the issue is that, with the way the description of this character is written, it seems to imply that "The Ghoul" is an anomaly in the way that he can think cleverly and posses cunning. This, of course, runs counter to games like Fallout 4 where there is a ghoul who is clever and cunning enough to be the leader of an entire community, along with other ghouls who are basically just normal people trying to get by. Literally every single Fallout game has this in some capacity. Essentially, if we take the description at face value, (and so far, there is no reason not to, knowing what we know about the production team) The Ghoul is only one of a small few ghouls to NOT be mindless cannon fodder. If anything, the games seem to imply it's the opposite, and the ferals are actually the minority, since ghouls only go feral after a certain amount of time.

Best case scenario, the character description is not indicative of the final product, and The Ghoul is just very talented ghoul who was given that title out of respect. Worst case, he'll be the ONLY non-feral ghoul in the show. So far, I would not even be remotely surprised if it is the former case, rather than the latter.

The Toddhead himself is involved and the creators are the guys behind Westworld. So far it seems like a genuine attempt at a Fallout Story (that also takes place in the game canon) and I like the idea of that protag, feels like a character I'd play in one of these games. The Halo TV show went to shit because instead of trying to adapt Halo it adapted only the most gayass Halo books and then still tried to subvert them.

Not really. It's pretty easy to tell the difference between a feral ghoul, and a sane one. Even if one starts acting up, you have plenty of tools and equipment both pre war and post war to deal with them.
Also, many of them lived during before the and probably have knowledge on how to repair nuclear cars and other important things. Getting on their bad side and killing will probably in a massive brain drain for the communities they were formerly apart of.

              Anonymous

              All ghouls eventually go feral.
People already know how to repair nuclear shit and important things without ghouls.

And yet the games do make it a point that ghouls are discriminated against like they're a race in and of their own, to the point where they have to form their own communities away from the normies.

That doesn't really change anything of what I said.

Fair enough. But I will say that ghouls don't necessarily all turn feral. The ghoulification process is largely inconsistent and unknown.

I think they really should have expanded on this concept. The master and Harold both were incidental, unique abominations but we hardly see much of anything like that after 2. It's always either ghouls or super mutants, not even New Vegas did much new on that front. I think maybe the marked men are supposed to be different but I'm not sure how. Ghost people are a good one but they aren't FEV related I'm pretty sure.

I think Marked Men are basically insane (but not feral) Ghouls. Freshly made by the Divide Nukes and ripped apart by the Divide Storms only to be constantly healed by all the background radiation.

Shouldn't ghouls be in pain too? Also it's established that ghouls (feral or not) smell like rotting flesh, which makes the amount of bigotry against them in the games seem very underwhelming. You literally couldn't live next to a ghoul because it'd smell so bad.

Yeah, they're good scifi-wise for the universe, but they're not really mutants, certainly not of an FEV based variety. Come to think of it, NV expanded on pretty much everything except for the human FEV mutations. Maybe they didn't want to retread old ground, that'd be my best guess. Probably also why the legion doesn't have any muties in their ranks, it would make it more similar to 3's enemy encounters.

                Anonymous

I think New Vegas played with this idea bit more cleverly by adding a great deal of focus on the Nightkin instead of just making a new race of mutants entirely.

I dont even think its true, afair he invented new way to make jet cheap.
Anyway, even if its 100% true, you are comparing minor obscure thing like jet to the major retcons which are in dozens, making mutants into orcs, raiders into baclground insane people who want to kill for the sake of it and have no structure, ressurecting bos, enclave and other shit.

But people in this very thread were acting like the Jet retcon is a major thing
Also what's with the "turned mutants into orcs" thing? There's 1, maybe 2 smart mutants in the original, every other mutant was a moron

There are stupid mutants and smart mutants because the smart mutants were made from good genetic meatier along (I.e. people not affected by radiation too much) and the dumb mutants were just wasteland random the Master dipped in the vat. This is why the Master wanted to get his hands on Vault 13. I’m not sure if this is ever explained clearly in the game.

Wrong. Mutants in fallout just humans. Even if it was possible to make them smarter/dumber it wont mean they will start killing everything on sight. They will just become big green humans which would think themselves superior to everyone.
Bethesda mutants are dumb green orcs which butcher humans for fun.

As the other anon said the super mutants being basically orcs goes back to Fallout 1. It is literally a plot point that trying to make super mutants out of wastelanders almost always results in them being moronic.

                Wrong
Flaw of mutants in fallout1 is that they are infertile, not their low iq.
Also low iq does not enable orc behaviour. You are moron, you should know. Does your moronation compel you to kill for fun and act irrationaly? Hardly. Even mice do not do that.
Yet mutants in troonout universe of bethesda do exactly that. Because they are orcs. They are comicaly evil for no reason.

Show me a Black person living in a room full of dismembered people parts. Hard mode: no edge cases which only confirm my point.
In addition historicaly violence on a large scale was always carried thanks to the high iq, not the low one. Nig may act up due to his violent nature, but he is not methodical and smart enough to commit any sort of actual atrocity.

That's a very weird flex but okay. Have you seen the shit Mexican cartels do? That's very similar to what Super Mutants do.

The Master kept Unity going via his own leadership and his first generation(aka non-moron) lieutenants. When Master killed himself many of the Super Mutants either died or fricked off like Jacob, who you pointed out.

                >Flaw of mutants in fallout1 is that they are infertile, not their low iq.
It's both. They dumb ones have be babysat by the smart ones, and that's why the Master uses them as cannon fodder.
It's only when you show him that they're completely infertile that he realizes his plans are fricking unsalvageable.
The reason they're dangerous is the same reason they're dumb: it fricks up their brain and they act irrationally. It's like how downies act.

So when you have a whole group of violent morons in a wasteland setting where food is scarce is there any wonder why they turn into violent cannibals? They're too moronic to think otherwise.

You don't see raiding bands of super mutants in New Vegas because most of them were hunted down and killed, they're going extinct and the few surviving mutants mostly live in isolated settlements up in the hills. That's an oversight because the medkits use a generic loot list. You can get Hydra which was explicitly invented by the Legion in the Madre vault too, depending on the loot table.

This just may be the chud in me warping stories to my worldview, but I get the impression that Bethesda, even today, sprinkles redpills in all of their games. They won't flat out tell you, it's up to you to pick up on it yourself. I think the most obvious example, the least subtle, is opening up Tenpenny Tower to the ghouls and seeing the aftermath of them completely frick over the place and kill all the humans.

The most modern example of Bethesda sprinkling redpills is the diversity of Starfield. It's a warning of the possible future ahead of us. Society could really look like that if we don't start doing something about it today.

Nothing would go wrong flying a fleet of vertibirds over NCR controlled California followed by a giant frickoff combat blimp. The NCR will take mighty kindly to the Brotherhood of Steel, especially after their bush war.

Kind of a moronic situation with that. Surely they would have found some training manuals at some point or had some brotherhood defectors around to teach people how to use the stuff?

the salvaged power armor is literally only a write-around with the power armor training bethesda added for fo3.
Neither game should have had lootable armor, like fallout 2. The training would have been unnecessary and power armor in general would have been more rare and valuable.

It has been lootable since the first fallout, and it's lootable in the second one as well.
                >power armor in general would have been more rare and valuable
It's not rare because people can actually make more suits now, and more suit have been recovered from further exploration of the wasteland since the first two games.

                Anonymous

                >It's not.
Yes it is. Power Armor training wasn't a thing until Fallout 3. Obsidian opted to keep the perk despite it not being lore friendly will fallout 1 and 2. They didn't need to extend the need for training in the lore. There would have been no reason for the them to salvage T45d and strip out the mechanics without the PA training requirement being made 'canon'.
                >It has been lootable since the first fallout, and it's lootable in the second one as well.
you cannot loot armor from dead npcs in fallout 2. You can in 1, but they removed your ability to do that in fallout 2
                >It's not rare because people can actually make more suits now
I mean in a gameplay sense, not a lore sense.

                It's still lootable.

The classic BoS were always good people who wanted to help and only recently stopped letting outsiders join until NV made them do a 180
They even ended 1 by slowly reintroducing advanced tech out to the populace and, iirc, becoming researchers

Fallout 1 and 2 protrayed the Brotherhood as far too insular and wary of the outside world. Even by the time of two, it was evident the Brotherhood were gradually lagging behind as the world moved on. The Mojave Chapter is the most reasonable extension of their "arc". While Fallout 3 and 4 are badly written, it is probably reasonable to assume the Brotherhood would need serious reform to stay around, much less remain a powerful presence in the wasteland.

Weren't the BoS basically getting their shit pushed in by NCR to the point of extinction on the west coast? Why the hell is there so many of them? I find it hard to believe they would send their entire force out west. They even brought the fricking Prydwen. But if they did, that implies Legion lost and collapsed at the battle of Hoover Dam or the BoS wiped the floor of them (and likely NCR) which would warrant a boycott of this dogshit. Hopefully this is all just flashback shit. Hopefully.

pic related has a pulp sensibility very different from Bethesda's constant barrage of Ink Spots, Nuka Cola, and Americana generally. Bethsda would set their games before the apocalypse if they could get away with it. It's obvious Todd etc. like that stuff and general audiences respond well to it too

          Anonymous

I very much disagree. All three of those aspects have been heavily prevalent in fallout since day 1.

And if anything, betheseda prefers the apocalypse. That why the east coast is still mainly wasteland. Interplay/oblivion actually progressed the west coast and even industrialized. Bethesda prefers scrap towns, rubble, and ruins.

            Anonymous

Bethesda prefers to wrap their games in the 1950s pre-apocalypse. They don't build new societies.

In F1/F2 it was always very clear that the old world was dead and the game was about exploring the new kinds of societies that evolved in the many years since mankind reset.

It's interesting to me that the one modern Fallout game made by (some) of the original devs didn't play into the 1950s thing nearly as much.

              Anonymous

I semi agree with this. I do think bethesda wraps their games with the pre war. But I also think interplay/obsidian did the same as well. The difference between them is that while they did put a lot of focus on the pre war aspect of the games, they balanced that attention with a strong focus on the world after the apocalypse, and how it picks up the pieces.

I like to headcanon that Mr House someone influenced them to act that way. Like House was trying to offer them employment and to take a similar "hat" of that of the Chairmen but leaning more into an Elvis/singer thing. They declined, obviously, but I think they must've still found the idea fascinating enough to adopt it. For all we know, perhaps the reason why they're so ignorant of who Elvis actually was is because House purposely made sure all infomation concerning him was scrapped.

Also in the last few episode they will bring out c,g.i liberty prime. Also look forward to Nuka cola everwhere but no other in lore based companies like robco or red rocket. Finally the main enemy is the enclave and their leader is a trump analog. There I spoiled the whole show, no need to watch.

Hopefully.

It's not the west coast brotherhood. Even if they did survive the events of new vegas, they would still be a smaller power for a good while after.

what i find funny is how they still handle fly over states like some couple of hours of plane ride. Everybody warps between east coast and west coast like its a small annoyance. When in reality crossing it by foot or slow mode like horseback is going to take half a year at minimum. Even that slow ass zeppelin is going to take a while as its a giant target in the sky to take pot shots at

They're probably from East, Maxson's chapter, considering the ship is named after Arthurian legend. Possibly meaning Maxson won in Fo4 so now they have enough resources to send another armies to the west.

        Anonymous

This I think would actually be interesting. A really powerful BoS chapter coming to deal with the NCR after they basically removed the BoS from their territory. Maxson was basically accepted as a first among equals by the other chapters too, so it'd be a cool conflict.
Also they might put in Liberty Prime for fanservice. Would be kind of funny to see it nuke what's basically a postwar reconstruction of the country it's so patriotic about.

This guy's nose looks fake. Overall not the best Ghoul look I've seen. Seems based on the 4 look but even less extreme that that. Ghouls are supposed to be fricking abominations who then casually walk up to you and talk to you like a regular fella with a sore throat.

The show does seem to be following Fallout 4 a lot at least visually. Realistically though, I don't see how they could be faithful to the original vision of ghouls in current day. It is too grotesque for general audiences, even those explicitly going in for a 'post-apocalyptic' show. I'm recalling the ghoul in Fallout 2 Redding or some other town who is attracting flies in the heat and wants you to go divert some power from the town generator to his house. That quest is what I always remember about ghouls.

The only solace I had as a Fallout fan was knowing Bethesda kept their shit far, far away from the west coast.
I hated what Bethesda did with the series and thought the east coast games were mostly dogshit in terms of writing and setting but at the end of the day it was kept separate from the real series.
I don't know who convinced them to do this, if it was Amazon, the studio, the writer, whoever, but the fact that they are coming out of the gates saying this is canon is a spit in the face to anyone that gave two shits about the series. Los Angeles isn't some podunk wasteland shithole, it's one of the most significant locations in the entire series and just from the screenshots it's clear they know absolutely frick all about it, like absolutely fricking nothing. Not a single writer has the faintest idea about the series they are writing for outside of Fallout 4. It's almost like Bethesda intentionally kept them in the dark. Fallout 4 directly references the NCR and what's shown so far doesn't even line up with that. How the frick did this even get made? Fallout is well past the point of flanderization, this isn't even the same series anymore.
Bethesda slowly and gradually sapped everything Fallout out of Fallout for mass appeal in the most brazen and thorough way possible, it's like turning Half Life into Fifa.
All that's left is the iconography and I guess I need to thank Bethesda for revealing that to me because now I fully understand what Ulysses was talking about.

Wait, so it takes place after new vegas AND on the west coast AND is canon? I guess we'll know which ending actually happened.
The fact they didn't just set it in the east gives me SOME hope it won't just be another turd, but not a lot.
The prydwen appearance is curious too. Maybe the powerful east coast BoS is coming home to push NCR's shit in? They definitely could, based off of their fallout 4 potrayal. I guess it means we'll get a fallout 4 ending too since it gets destroyed in about half of them.
I'm most interested in these clarifications since we won't be getting another fallout game untill the 2030s and Fallout 4 didn't even reveal which NV is canon. Grim.
Place your bets about the ending. Hoping for House, but expecting NCR.

I think an institute ending would be kind of interesting too, since they do end up taking over the commonwealth like they originally intended to. They're also big MT tier advanced, so they'd be the most interesting choice as far as actually progressing the east coast. Minutemen + Institute for me.

      I imagine something like this.
      >Lucy : What's this medicine? X...111 compound?
      >Brotherhood Scribe : Oh, it's a upgraded version of Radaway made by a senior scribe in Citadel. I heard that the sentinel there helped making it.

Only first-gen super mutants were intelligent and even they had plenty of morons like Harry.
Second-gens were pretty much all morons.

Making up bullshit explanation for your moronic retcon doesnt change retcon from being moronic.
Where do mutants even come from?
      Who is making them?
Its said in troonout4 institute made them, yet its not the case because there are no facilities in institiute to create mutants. So its cheap bs dismissive explanation.
      Truth is they are orcs.

You're getting increasingly schizo, anon. But I'll indulge you.

I haven't played enough Fallout 4 to verify if Institute claims they made them but I'll assume you're not lying. They're probably talking about the FEV experiments that resulted in the Fallout 3/west coast Super Mutants. The west coast super mutants existing at all is bad writing is something I'll grant you.
Mutants in 3 make more of themselves via dunking people they grab into FEV. Once again pretty bad writing but Bethesda wasn't even going to include them in FO3 until fan's b***hed so I'm not surprised.

BTW sources are saying that they're going to make it canon that Vault Tec launched nukes first to accelerate

Vault-Tec and the Enclave are buddy-buddies, the difference between them isn't entirely clear.

Then it is utterly stupid if Vault-tec executives died from the Great War. I mean, if they really wanted to start the nuclear apocalypse, shouldn't they do it inside the vault?
