3 is notoriously poorly coded resulting in the game reaching single digit framerate and taking several minutes to list unless you have it on an SSD by the time you have the last content pack for it, so unless you go out of your way for guides and mods to improve performance

Off the top of my head, the save file explodes in size because the game is constantly generating and saving thumbnails -- and NEVER deleting them.
If you go into create-a-sim and mess around with hair color or shirt patterns or whatever, every single change will cause a new thumbnail for that sim to be generated. According to a guy on Nraas, those thumbnails persist even if you revert the changes you made.
The greenhouse, which is a premium store item, requires cheats or mods to actually use, because it's "indoors" and plants can't be planted indoors. Also, plants go dormant in winter even if they're in the greenhouse. (Actually they can go dormant halfway through autumn and until halfway through spring, which totally breaks gardening. But that can be modded)

use any game starter mod and pick and choose only packs that matter to not bloat up your game. i personally just play with generations+seasons and nothing else because i am very grounded in reality player and those add to base game experience.
however sims 2 is still better game, albeit dating breaks the game pacing as you can just farm lifetime points in it which defeats the point of game having strict 'time limit' as you can just keep purchasing elixirs of life

yeah, 2 is still better. and afaik it's the only game in the series where you can create fully functional apartment complex from scratch with no limit to amount of apartments, so things like khruschevkas are possible because of it, and i could reenact my ultimate slav dream in a video game, at last

Easiest way to sum up the Sims 4 :

Every action that every rendered Sim does is put in a queue. The more Sims being rendered, the longer the queue, the longer it takes to do every action in the game. The queue also includes random idle animations and animations that play when using furniture. Above ~30 Sims in my experience will often have needs be unable to be met, because the previously mentioned queue is full of idle animations, NPC Sims interacting, and animations of other Sims eating/drinking/using their phones

I really don't know how or why they coded this game so poorly but at least the Sims 1-3 exist

and sims 3 apartments are the worst kind. people give sims 3 too many credits, while due to open world it had to cut A LOT OF STUFF to make it run. sucks sims 3 is not retro or else it coulda been discussed as technologal marvel like all those backports of ps1 to N64 games, as sims 3 was very ambitious for its time

1 and 2 are actually retro

Every game is slow as absolute shit to load and likes lagging to absolute shit on contemporary and post contemporary hardware, and generally requires patches to run stably. Sims 2 requires one for Windows 10 compatibility, otherwise half the graphical effects don't work right. You're going to want it anyways, because better resolution settings

Theres a mod that basically clears memory every 10 minutes to mitigate the rampant memory leaks. I think that's probably how everyone plays it. It's hard limited to 4gb ram which really exacerbates the situation.

There are fixes, but you will need to mod the shit out of it. It'll work great after that, also limit your frame rate on Nvidia to 60, the game literally doesn't have a frame limiter, it'll always run poor without it.

Nowadays you're probably better off with Animal Crossing. Sims was nice because you could customize basically everything in the game, but now this is something you can do in almost any game, platformers, RPG's, GTA, etc. That and both users and EA started charging for stuff that should be free which I think was ultimately their downfall.

2 is definitely the better game. People like the idea of 3, it sound amazing with the open world and all, but it's clunky and the game runs like ass even with the fixes. Anons will swear up and down that they have a magic setup that runs the game perfectly but even the people who have created the fixes admit that it will never run completely without issue. Most of the content released for the game just bogs it down. You can download the complete Sims 2 with all the Expansions and DLC and stuff without issue.

i actually have to edit hex myself regardless because i have very specific windows version (LTSB 2015) due to driver support, but that doesnt support some .net frameworks, and that patch needs one of them. so it's better to edit it yourself

I liked Sims 2 the best. I find the regular way to play the game kind of boring though. So instead I make the biggest lot I can on the map and then create a new sim and buy that lot and that way you end up with a huge empty lot and only like $1000 to start with. Then the challenge is to try to build it up to a huge mansion without dying or getting old. You end up having to start with just a tiny 9x9 or so size house with mostly no walls. And you have to pretty much get a job on the first day otherwise your sim will probably die from hunger. Most attempts don't work out, after a while I can tell i'm about to die so I start again. Going to work refills your hunger so that helps a bit, but I often lose my job on the first day for smelling bad or being in a bad mood, depending on the job. And I try to keep buying the elixir of life when I get up to that part so I don't get old, makes the challenge a bit harder for a while to have to make sure you have enough points to buy it all the time.

I remember Sims 3 being notorious at launch and being poorly received, apparently it was a huge step down from 2, like even basic stuff like interactions and flexibility was ;imited compared to Sims 2. It's as if all the things learned from Sims 2 were thrown out the window for Sims 3, and it took them years to get 3 to become a proper normal proper sims game. Sorta like DICE does for every Battlefield game they release. interactions and flexibility being limited compared to Sims 2.
There's also the dlc complaints, apparently the sims 3 took things sims 2 already had and sold them as dlc for 3, or they split the content and features originally bundled in 1 dlc package for sims 2 into multiple dlcs for sims 3, trippling the dlc and justify their existence and force hardcore sims fans to get them.
I'm assuming after all these years their issues and complaints have been addressed, or fans have grown complacent and put up with it.

The only thing I remember about Sims 2 is that it took forever to load (had the CD version) and crashed constantly. Agree with that others that both Maxis and EA never really understood what people liked about the first game, calling the sequels by the prototype name "Dollhouse" would make more sense for 3 and 4.

      >that both Maxis and EA never really understood what people liked about the first game
The people that took over Maxis do not understand it, but Will Wright did. Sims 1 echoes the wit and charm of prior Sim games with all the hallmark dark subtle humor tied to it. Pic related: This shit wouldn't fly in a new Sims game especially with the eerie music that accompanied it.

I really liked it, but I get why some people hated it. The Sims is advertised as a game at the end of the day and is a game it's terrible. I hate The Line and Dark Souls 1 for similar reasons

this right here is what people mean when they say will wright soul all over it. he got you good. you will never be satisfied. it's endless repetition of grind for pointless consumerism pleasures. your sim will never be happy, and so wont you

It's a good message, yes, but a terrible idea for a game. Making new game plus part of the lore was clever in Dark Souls 1, too, but I wouldn't call it fun

Sims 3 open world was a good idea that failed execution because the "move out" mechanic means every non player household moves out and skips town constantly leading to dead neighbourhoods.

Sims 2 does everything better and runs like a dream

Its fine corruption is so overblown just dont delete sims and try not to use the dev tools in game. Theres a little file you can download that clears corruption every time you load up a lot.

Been playing this uberhood for like 8 years with the only rollback needed was when a mod destroyed butler ai so hed just stand on the lot not doing anything forever.

i think i found the one that worked for me was on archiveorg which was ultimate collection
it must be modified because sims 2 not supposed to just work on modern windows, but that one did.
you still need to use some mods to fix it. like shadows gonna be fricked no matter what because they used some bitmap texture that is not supported on modern windows, period. so it's either you disable them, or mod new shadows that change code to modern standard
