i liked elemental war of magic as a kid
replaying it as an adult i want to beat the shit out of child me for thinking that was anything more than a buggy shite mess
i played fallen enchantress too, was less buggy but was extremely barebones
and since i dont want to leave you on such a negative comment, if you want a game like this that actually works try the age of wonder series
any game from 1 to 3 or planetfall, 4 needs a bit of work right now
It's one of those games that have some really cool ideas but which fails on the execution of those ideas. I can't say it's a good game, but it's worth a try if you pirate it or get it really cheap.
It was cool at the time, but it hasn't aged well. I wouldn't bother. AoW4 does a lot of what it tried to do but better if you want something modern like it.

It's a terrible game. If you want fantasy 4X game, your best bet is Fall From Heaven.

A lot of concepts and options, that do not gel into anything meaningful.
Still a nice ride for mission or two as you observe all the jank.

It was massively improved when legendary heroes came out.

Wasn't Legendary Heroes just remaking the game from scratch because the original version was fundamentally broken?
I remember getting it for free on steam with the developers saying it was their way of apologizing for the brokenness of the first game.
The game has a unique spot for me.
It is a nice mix of civilizations with tactical combat combined with a leveling up system for your sovereign and champions.
I really enjoy the progression of going from a mage barely able to scratch the enemy to 1 shotting an army with a fireball.
The strategic spells like METEOR and the volcano are, shall we say, a blast?
Are there any other strategy games that have magic progression like this game does?
I remember playing Lords of magic way back in the day that had similar vibes.
