Considering how assisted suicide is legal in 10 jurisdictions in the US, I'm going to say yes.
The complicated part of James' character is that his actual reason for killing Mary isn't straightforward and is partially dependent on what ending you get. I don't think James in the Leave or In Water endings is a bad person because it's more evident in those ones that he genuinely did love Mary and killing her was as much of an act of mercy as it was an act of selfishness, unlike the Maria ending which unambiguously presents him as an awful person with no motive beyond getting his dick wet.
That's because in the leave and in water endings he accepts what he did, while in the Maria ending he's still in denial about it all. Leave is the only ending where he's able to somewhat cope with what he did and move on.
She expressed both of these things. It's not an excuse but James like Mary wasn't of clear mind when he killed his wife.
it's been a while since I played it, but she tells James to kill her in a fit of anger over the hospital taking advantage of her, then immediately follows it up with her saying she doesn't want to die

Here is a direct quote from the leave ending >M: I told you that I wanted to die, James. I wanted the pain to end. >J: That's why I did it, honey. I just couldn't watch you suffer. No that's not true... You also said you didn't wanna die. The truth is I hated you. I wanted you out of the way. I wanted my life back... >M: James... if that were true, then why do you look so sad?
Both characters are incredibely damaged people whose life got fricked by an illness. What James did was wrong but he does know that and wanted to get punished for it. That's why PH exists
Brother, I think you need to replay the game.
If I shout 'fricking kill me' in a moment of weakness, you can't just snap my neck. Especially if I within the same few days express how much I DON'T want to die.
maria ending has james go full delusion not even recognizing maria is coughing like mary did, repeating the entire thing. i think the endings are merely reactive to how james behaved in silent hill, he was capable of giving in to his guilt via suicide and also fully capable of going full crazy not questioning who maria is.
yes? In wars both kill each other every day yet got back to normal lives after its over. This overhyping of the concept of murder derives from societies impulse trying to keep peace time killings (like enemy rivals competition reaching boiling point) under control by making it taboo. Yet when organized violence like war breaks out its a free for all
he didn't forget about it, her body was literally in the car...he convinced himself he did nothing wrong and the town helped him with that delusion until he realized what he did was wrong
>That's why I did it honey. I just couldn't watch you suffer. No, that's not true. The truth is, I hated you! I wanted you out of the way. I wanted my life back... >James... if that were true, then why do you look so sad?
Guilt is a defense mechanism to protect the ego of bad people
It's your brain's way of lying to you by telling you you're still a good person even if you do bad things. Even if you never make up for your actions, guilt is how your brain convinces you that you don't actually need to change, because experiencing change is way less painful than living with a lifetime of guilt.
Because if you feel guilty about hurting someone, then it means you're a good person, right? And if you stop feeling guilty and move on to be a productive contributing member of society again, then it means you're callous and bad.
Guilt is your brain telling you that you’re a horrible person, you fricking twat. That’s what makes bad people “bad”, they DONT have a conscience. You don’t feel guilt if you still believe you’re a good person.
He murdered Eddie and his FRICKING wife then he killed himself. He also stole a shitton of things from the town. These actions are typically considered to be bad.
multi murderer. His SH was punishment for mary, but got 2 Pyramid heads after killing eddie(justified) I side with james, he deserved it all but Mary was 100% dead and he went through literal hell. In The Water is the canon ending though. Laura is truly the only one who suffered. She was an innocent child.
I was wondering why "Leave" was so happy considering James is basically now a killer on the run, but I figured Laura's innocence was implied to have sanctified James a bit. The only epilogue possible from Leave is that James changed identities and adopted Laura to a new life
you do realize that his guilt, right? like he himself believes he deserves to go to hell for what he did? do you think bad people have such a conscience?
What use is punishing someone who has completely, irrevocable repented for their actions? Why do you think religions such as christianity follow this line of thinking? Absolutist moron.
Idk, maybe to dissuade people from causing harm to others and do things like taking their existence away? Even if it didn't dissuade anyone, harm should come to those who harm others.

Some people are in fact born with genetic predispositions to things like sociopathy. And if they weren't born missing some screws then them killing someone for personal gain while having full knowledge of the negative impact they're having is even worse. That's why they made in water the best and main ending.

Just kill him by playing bad. He will commit suicide. There you got your pleasure of a person dying for committing murder.
>commit a horrible crime >show clear signs of mental instability >express genuine remorse and a desire to repent >FRICK YOU, YOU DON'T GET FORGIVENESS, JUST ACCEPT THAT YOU'RE A PIECE OF SHIT AND KYS
It's genuinely concerning how easily people flip flop between tolerance and radicalism these days.
God won’t absolve you as you won’t have sincerely repented. Anons in this thread are quite literally mentally incapable of fathoming the idea that people who have committed terrible actions may indeed understand that what they have done is terrible, and feel remorse for it. No, they would rather simply hang anyone that commits any sort of “bad” action regardless of the context.
>Anons in this thread are quite literally mentally incapable of fathoming the idea that people who have committed terrible actions may indeed understand that what they have done is terrible, and feel remorse for it

most juries won't fail to convict james just because he feels bad. it's literally why he's in silent hill. he's objectively gotten away with murder. the guilty feeds the place, but the murder is why he's there.

I didn’t say he wasn’t a criminal. Nobody is debating the criminality of his actions. We are debating the morality of it. A jury should and will convict him of murder.
>"I told you I wanted to die, James. I wanted the pain to end." >"That's why I did it, honey. I just couldn't watch you suffer." >"..." >"No, that's not true. You also said that you didn't want to die. The truth is I hated you. I wanted you out of the way. I wanted my life back..." >"James... if that were true, then why do you look so sad?"
The best part is how the conversation changes slightly depending on which ending you're about to get. That one is for Leave, in In Water it goes >"No, that's not the whole truth. You also said that you didn't want to die. The truth is... part of me hated you. For taking away my life..." >"You killed me and you're suffering for it. It's enough, James."
While James' worst rendition, Maria, goes >"You killed me..." >I couldn't watch you suffer." >"Don't make excuses, James. I know I was a burden on you. You must have hated me. That’s why you got rid of me." >"It's true... I may have had some of those feelings. It was a long three years... I was... tired."
It still blows my mind we have yet to get a game with this level of narrative. No bs pandering, lore dumping, politics shenanigans, just cut and dry plot with memorable characters. Each year I just want gaming to die frick
Not at all, he's a human. Nobody can judge him unless they've been in his position. Roasties hate him because they're hypocrits who think it's more humane to leave someone the moment they get a terminal diagnosis as opposed to ending their suffering.
He's morally grey. Trying to fit the categorize the SH2 cast in neat moral categories is reductive and completely misses the point of the game IMO. Even Angela, the most sympathetic character in the game who doesn't deserve a goddamn thing that happens to her, isn't really innocent.
>Even Angela, the most sympathetic character in the game who doesn't deserve a goddamn thing that happens to her
bullshit, I saw how she used to dress, she was practically begging for it
>took care of a terminally ill wife AND a child at the same time >never snapped and euthanized his wife >raised the infant reincarnation of the girl who effectively murdered his original daughter, all while hiding from a murderous cult >openly acknowledges how easy it would be to abandon or kill her but persevering and going on to become an amazing father to her
Harry arguably went through a greater hell than James ever did without losing his shit.
>He would have to be humiliated or revealed to actually be a terrible person
Yes >because no Chad White males allowed
No, it'd be because secondaries only know Silent Hill as "that one place people that are secretly guilty of something go to". So Harry being there obviosuly must mean that he has a dark secret or something. It's why Travis, Alex and Murphy were all given plot twist backstories >muh I might be a mysoginistic serial killer >muh I killed my brother in the lake >muh I might've killed my son's murderer or not or maybe I killed my son myself or maybe I was a prison guard all along because different endings = retroactive backstories
Hell you can even add Shattered Memories' Harry on that list in some endings, like the one where he's was a drunkard or fricking hookers all along
Depends on the ending. He's less of an butthole and more an ordinary person filtered through the eyes of his schizo daughter. Fricking hookers and drinking aren't flaws on the same level as murdering your wife.
Harry had the power of 'coming out in the 90s' at his side
You just know he'd be rectonned into an butthole if Konami remade his game first.
Remember the dude that made the movie changed Harry's character from a dad to a mom because he "couldn't believe a father would care that much about their child, unlike a mother"
On one hand, frick that French homosexual and the immeasurable damage he's done to the series with his shitty movie. On the other hand, I have to admire how a coomer was able to get his hands on AAA IP and use it to make an entire ass movie about his kinks.

Have you ever seen what metal that's been through a fire looks like? It rusts almost instantly after the fire is out.
The falling ash was kino. It was obviously a good idea too because it's the one thing about Silent Hill most people remember, assuming they remember anything at all about a long dead property.
>not even bothering to cast an actor who looks at least 10% like the character
It's going to be dogshit. My only hope is that when this flops miserably it'll wake up all the morons who still mindlessly jerk the first movie off and swear that it's so faithful to the spirit of Silent Hill.
The only people I see riding the movie's meat are the ones who haven't played the games or only played the non-Team Silent ones. Even then, they're the normiest of normies because even horror movie fans think it's shit.
I never said it was faithful, just that the monsters look good. It's a decent Creature Feature and still one of the best videogame adaptations ever made (the lowest fricking bar imaginable to clear in 99% of cases)
Don't forget >had the scarier Otherworld
James's Silent Hill was pretty tame compared to some of the shit Harry went through in that first game imo, with the exception of Pyramid Head.
Exactly. Otherworld based off the religious trauma and abuse heaped upon a little girl by a doomsday cult > Otherworld based off muh depression and guilty conscience.
We did. And it's intended too, in the Making of SH2 they mention how the bathroom you start the game in was the first room they ever designed for the game and it served throughout as their visual reference for the game's artstyle: "simultaneous repulsion and attraction", they called it. >"I wanted to create something that would really disturb the game players whilst attracting them. Something with an aura of mystery"
Personally, I think SH2 is a perfect Christmas game.
Having finally played it, 1 is fantastic. I like it a lot and it's so damn charming even when emulating on Duckstation. Buddy of mine told me only 2 and 3 are worth playing years ago and he was dead wrong.
why are morons like OP and redditors incapable of understanding that one cannot simply create little moral boxes that everyone cleanly fits into? James is just a man, like any of us. He is neither a good, nor a bad person.
I remember when the general consensus on James was that he was an ordinary man put into an impossibly shitty situation and made a terrible mistake when he was at his lowest and most unstable. Really not looking forward to all the moral absolutism all the newbies are going to bring into the discussion when the remake comes out and opinion shifts to "MARY GOOD, JAMES BAD."
I play DBD and I was furious that it was Pyramid Head and Cheryl. Ito even designed the White Hunter for DBD but they said "lolno gib pyramid head." Though I think you put the blame mostly on Konami for this. They've never really given a shit about their franchises beyond printing money.

When you threw in buzzwords, homosexualron. I know English isn't your first language, Paco, but you could at least try to read.
I was furious that when we finally did get James as a legendary skin for Heather (frick you BHVR, I'm not calling her Cheryl) there was nothing but screaming and crying from Twitter that it wasn't Maria instead, like she honestly deserved to be added more than the literal main character of the fricking game.
Then they did it again when they thought that Harry was going to be the next SH character in line for a skin. It drives me fricking crazy that I have to share a community with these people.
I'm playing silent Hill 2 for the first time and I feel moronic. I had to look up a walkthrough to figure out that I needed to put the juice in the garbage chute.
hes going to spoil him self regardless due to the moronic puzzles
no one in their right mind would look in the other side of the room of the grand father clock
I already know the biggest spoiler that James killed his wife because of his need to coom. At least that's what I've skimmed from years of silent Hill discussion I've scrolled past. I just wanted to know if I missed something super obvious about the juice.
honestly that's one of the dumbest "puzzles" in the game, it generally gets better after that and the apartments
Thanks anon. The apartments have been kind of annoying. I already planned to stick with it but you've emboldened me now.
Had he learned nothing he'd get Maria. In Water shows James learns the same things as in Leave he just can't cope with it. In Leave he accepts it *and* manages to move on. Anyway Team Silent have always said that while In Water is the ending they worked the most on (thus all the allegories to water and cultural significance of having a loved on in the car when you commit suicide) there is no canon ending and never will be. Only homosexuals online will try to convince you about In Water being canon due to "muh Guy Cihi muh Frank Sunderland muh Twin Perfect"
Expecting the worthless NEET failures here to properly understand the nuance of James as a character is a futile effort. Everything is black and white for them. Don’t bother.
>That's why I did it honey. I just couldn't watch you suffer. No, that's not true. The truth is, I hated you! I wanted you out of the way. I wanted my life back... >James... if that were true, then why do you look so sad?
It's certainly the least offensive one compared with Homecoming or Origins (the latter only because it was forced to be a prequel to SH1 meaning it absolutely had to touch on (read: frick up lore on) Alessa, the Flauros, the cult, Kaufmann, Lisa etc.). The game needed half a year more in the oven, better monster designs and endings that didn't retroactively change the narrative's backstory. Exchange its soundtrack with Homecoming's and you have a pretty good game.
the thing I hated the most about this Silent Hill is that IIRC it shouldnt be YOUR silent hill, it should be that fricking cop womans. SHE's the one with the actual trauma that would cause SH to appear and all the related monsters especially the final boss
this guy felt like a complete random who just got sucked in and Die Hard'd his way out of a stupid situation. this isnt the first time SH has done this either. Silent Hill games where you are a rando who get sucked into someone elses dimension and have to find them and reason or defeat with THEM to get your way out is always shit to me.. but whatever. Look! its Pyramid Head! woohoo!
It has the atmosphere, characters, and themes but it definitely needed a more able team behind it. I feel bad for Vatra especially when I remember seeing an article or tweet of the developers asking Konami for more time or more resources.
thats stupid. all three are suffering their own, personally created purgatory (not hell). they cant let go of their bad feefees, so it torments them. theyre not bad at all. someone add a ITS TRAUMA sticker to my post
all these monkey brains going irrational over PUNISH SOMEONE FOR CRIME OOOK OOOK! but forget that if a man shows true and honest remorse for what was done, it's because they were pushed past the point. hell, James could have left his wife to rot and banged some hookers in TJ, he has no real reason to stick around if he didnt love her. if he was truly evil, it would have killed her asap. but he did it all because he loved her and struggle to do whats best for her.
Right, so do you understand why your reasoning of “muh self control” is completely meaningless and moronic when Silent Hill 2 is quite literally a game about a normal man like you and I commiting a horrible action due to dire conditions?
If you believe James did what he did due to the need to coom then all the power to you anon, I hope you find comfort in knowing that was your interpretation of the narrative.

Considering you're a gay sack of crap, you can "fricking" go frick yourself.
I really don't since many people do not mentally break when faced with a horrid situation. My childhood was similar to SH4's Walter and I'm not a serial killer yet, thus I am better than James for now.
The narrative is exaggerated so that we could play a game. Obviously people usually don’t kill their sick spouses. However it server a narrative purpose. Don’t be purposely obtuse.
NTA, but yes, that is objectively a reason why he killed mary. that's why there's big titty nurses and pairs of nice legs trying to kill him. and his personal punisher is associated with rape and murder.
It was part, though not the whole reason. Reducing the entire game to “JAMES COULDNT COOM!!” takes quite away from the message of the game.

I agree, it was only part, but it was a particularly strong reason for the murder seeing as half the enemies in this game are sexual, not even counting maria, whom is a sexualized mary.

You can really tell from the responses in this thread who doesn't know what it feels like to be the primary caregiver for someone who's terminally ill. I think it's easy for people to picture it, but only conceptually. The grinding, smoldering reality of it day in and day out is really too much to understand. You're trapped in this horrible limbo with a person who's both alive and dead. You can't move on and have a life, because you love that person too much and want to care for them. But you're also suffering and alone, and eventually that pain begins to change you. People aleays say there's nothing left to discuss but I feel like I still see a number of conversations about the game and it seems like it's only going to get even more discussion as the remake comes out. Even if most of it is surfsce level why do people think there's nothing left to discuss?
>Ladies and gentlemen, James Sunderland may be a notorious sex pervert, kidnapper, and wife killer. But, he says a spooky town full of monsters only he can see told him he's completely absolved of any crime! Now ask yourselves, do those sound like the words of a guilty man? I rest my case.
You can really tell from the responses in this thread who doesn't know what it feels like to be the primary caregiver for someone who's terminally ill. I think it's easy for people to picture it, but only conceptually. The grinding, smoldering reality of it day in and day out is really too much to understand. Guilt is you realizing you're being excluded by your actions so you react in a way that would maximize your chances of fitting in with the rest of society. This is why it's said sociopaths aren't able to feel guilt. Naturally, they have absolutely no interest in being part of the group. If they could, they would get rid of everyone except those who serve them a purpose.
Actual sociopath here. We feel guilt as much as, if not more than, anybody else. If you are not feeling guilt right now, you are literally not even human.
Considering the fact that I've now lived through the experience of watching someone you care about wither away and die, I have to say that James is neither bad or good. He's just a very sad man who did something he deeply regrets. Morality doesn't play into it.
It's not implied James even had to be at the hospital all the time or was going hundreds of thousands of dollars into debt for the experimental treatments but even so that's the point of marrying someone. He signed up for it.
He wasn't. Mary even says that he doesn't come to visit her. The remake has a chance to really expand upon something the original didn't spend much time on by showing us just how involved James was with Mary after her diagnosis, because by all accounts in the original game he seems to have checked out pretty quickly all things considered.
It probably is too late at this point. I know Ito has said one of the female team members, one he apparently even almost married it seemed like, died some years ago from cancer or something.
We are currently in an Era in which almost every main character needs to be "quirky" and "epic" especially if it's tied to AAA smack. It's the reasons characters than that stray from that tend to be more noticed. That's not to say you can't do quirky right or that the should be a somber character with emotional issues all the time man that entire troupe is overstaying its run.
I think it also helped that it wasn't afraid to delve into taboo topics that even games today won't touch. Like I can't think of a single game other than this one where incest and euthanasia are major plot points.
doesn't deal with those themes specifically but an equally mature and adult horror game I played was https://shop.redcandlegames.com/app/devotion
Would recommend it if you want something similar. I dream of the timeline where Red Candle got to do a Silent Hill game instead of fricking Bloober
I wish I could like these games, but they play so aggressively awful that I can't make it through any of them. >Mario 64 camera >buildings with 40 rooms (90% of them are locked) >LOUD NOISES >puzzles are embarrassing no matter the difficulty >stories so one dimensional they need to be carried by the world and character design
If it wasn't for the music and the design I'd say they were completely worthless.
Missing out on a great experience due to your inability to enjoy things for what they are which hints at a much deeper flaw in your person, but you're probably suffering the consequences of that in your life already
You said you couldn't make it through any of them, if you enjoyed the first game then that makes you a liar. If you didn't play it you're a liar as well. Not sure why you'd back yourself into a corner like that and expect anyone to want to engage with someone misleading them.
Comparing this slop to David Lynch is a true philistine's opinion. To think that your horribly made Japanese games have any worth compared to even the worst Lynch work is laughable. have a nice day.
So the praise for SH2 mostly amounts to people who only played Mario, Sonic, and Crash Bandicoot having their jaws hit the floor when they realize they're playing a "bad" guy for the first time?
yes, he murdered his sick wife and went out to party and frick prostitutes, he fell in love with one of those prostitutes, one that look like his wife but hotter.
Yes
Next question?
What ending did you get?
I don’t even know what game this is lol
movie*
I don't think so. He did a bad thing, but the guilt weighed heavy on him. Bad people typically don't feel any guilt.
So it's okay to murder someone as long as you feel bad about it afterwards?
Leave is the only ending where he's able to somewhat cope with what he did and move on.
it's not assisted suicide when the person getting killed has expressed that they do not want to die
she quite literally does though. maybe play the game next time.
it's been a while since I played it, but she tells James to kill her in a fit of anger over the hospital taking advantage of her, then immediately follows it up with her saying she doesn't want to die
Here is a direct quote from the leave ending
>M: I told you that I wanted to die, James.
She expressed both of these things. It's not an excuse but James like Mary wasn't of clear mind when he killed his wife.
Brother, I think you need to replay the game.
If I shout 'fricking kill me' in a moment of weakness, you can't just snap my neck. Especially if I within the same few days express how much I DON'T want to die.
Yes I can, pussy. Fricking stop me.
maria ending has james go full delusion not even recognizing maria is coughing like mary did, repeating the entire thing. i think the endings are merely reactive to how james behaved in silent hill, he was capable of giving in to his guilt via suicide and also fully capable of going full crazy not questioning who maria is.
yes? In wars both kill each other every day yet got back to normal lives after its over. This overhyping of the concept of murder derives from societies impulse trying to keep peace time killings (like enemy rivals competition reaching boiling point) under control by making it taboo. Yet when organized violence like war breaks out its a free for all
???
uh, are confusing 'good or bad person' with 'person who has empathy versus anti-social personality disorder'?
Motherfricker murdered his wife and forgot about it for years til someone pranked his ass wife "a letter from his dead wife".
he didn't forget about it, her body was literally in the car...he convinced himself he did nothing wrong and the town helped him with that delusion until he realized what he did was wrong
When you put it that way he's just a pile of shit
he is but he thinks that if he allows himself to forget he can pretend Mary is still alive which is what causes all of the things to happen
Idiots who didn’t play the game
>about it for years
Anon. The events of Silent Hill 2 don't take place in the future. In some of the endings he gets his wife's corpse out of his car
>for years
Fricking moron, your IQ is the same as Jospeh Anderson's lmao
Guilt is a defense mechanism to protect the ego of bad people
It's your brain's way of lying to you by telling you you're still a good person even if you do bad things. Even if you never make up for your actions, guilt is how your brain convinces you that you don't actually need to change, because experiencing change is way less painful than living with a lifetime of guilt.
Because if you feel guilty about hurting someone, then it means you're a good person, right? And if you stop feeling guilty and move on to be a productive contributing member of society again, then it means you're callous and bad.
Guilt over shame.
Guilt is your brain telling you that you’re a horrible person, you fricking twat. That’s what makes bad people “bad”, they DONT have a conscience. You don’t feel guilt if you still believe you’re a good person.
You don't choose what you feel.
>feeling nothing means you're a sociopath
>guilt means you're a sociopath
Well, frick.
where's the it's trauma poster?
He's just a man. He's better than some and worse than others. Is what it is.
He murdered Eddie and his FRICKING wife then he killed himself. He also stole a shitton of things from the town. These actions are typically considered to be bad.
Eddie was self-defence.
James had like 40 healing items by that point. He could've tanked the shots and disarmed Eddie if he wanted.
Yeah, it's kind of the whole point of the story really. It's what makes him a really interesting character because he was so tormented by his past.
he's a murderer. Nonetheless it's cool to see how silent hill basically becomes a personal hell that preys on the emotionally weak and vulnerable
multi murderer.
The only epilogue possible from Leave is that James changed identities and adopted Laura to a new life
Eileen shaving
God I love Eileen so much, bros
She is cuter than Heather
Why don't we get to watch her changing clothes or anything
Legit cut content I bet. SH4 was sadly rushed, and in dev with 3. Its entire theme is voyeurism and sexual like SH2.
bunny still spooks me
No. Mary asked him to kill her.
She was joking
>
you do realize that his guilt, right? like he himself believes he deserves to go to hell for what he did? do you think bad people have such a conscience?
Yeah you're right. I guess it really is okay to murder people and you don't deserve anything bad to happen to you as long as you feel bad afterwards.
You, and everyone that thinks like you, is exactly why the US has the highest incarceration rates out of all developed countries. You people are incapable of understanding what rehabilitation means.
nobody cares about rehabilitating murderers, it's about punishment. there isn't only a punishment for the sake of the victim, but also punishment for the sake of society. there's a reason why public lynching and execution has been in nearly every society.
Sorry anon, it’s not 1840 anymore. Please keep your rhetoric to the history books where it belongs.
it's 2023 you fricking chud, you maga bastards will be in prison for the jan 6 mass rapes of democracy!
I mean, it's sad that some people are randomly born thoughtless murderers but how the frick can you think letting them ruin or end other peoples lives scot free is fair? Why wouldn't everyone just be a murderer then?
No one is born a thoughtless murderer nor did I ever imply murderers should be let free you straw-manning imbecile. Maybe read my post properly again before replying to me.
Some people are in fact born with genetic predispositions to things like sociopathy. And if they weren't born missing some screws then them killing someone for personal gain while having full knowledge of the negative impact they're having is even worse. That's why they made in water the best and main ending.
do you have a peer reviewed study to back up your claim that you for some reason think is relevant to silent hill?
>No one is born a thoughtless murderer
>it's sad that some people are randomly born thoughtless murderers
are they though? I don't think this actually happens outside of storytelling
Just kill him by playing bad. He will commit suicide. There you got your pleasure of a person dying for committing murder.
>commit a horrible crime
>show clear signs of mental instability
>express genuine remorse and a desire to repent
>FRICK YOU, YOU DON'T GET FORGIVENESS, JUST ACCEPT THAT YOU'RE A PIECE OF SHIT AND KYS
It's genuinely concerning how easily people flip flop between tolerance and radicalism these days.
Uhhh bro? Where's your forgiveness of me wanting to kill James for killing his wife?
it's shitposting m8, you're getting trolled. but in all seriousness, you're a piece of shit and kys
>As long as you feel bad later, it's cool
based gunna kill normies, feel bad but be absolved by God.
>Anons in this thread are quite literally mentally incapable of fathoming the idea that people who have committed terrible actions may indeed understand that what they have done is terrible, and feel remorse for it
Which posts implied that?
I can feel bad for doing something. That will never absolve me in the eyes of others.
Yea. I know. This thread is proof of that. That’s why we don’t give summary judgements by mob rule.
>Jury
That’s not in any way equivalent to judgements by mob rule.
most juries won't fail to convict james just because he feels bad. it's literally why he's in silent hill. he's objectively gotten away with murder. the guilty feeds the place, but the murder is why he's there.
I didn’t say he wasn’t a criminal. Nobody is debating the criminality of his actions. We are debating the morality of it. A jury should and will convict him of murder.
>homie went to hell
point proven
>"I told you I wanted to die, James. I wanted the pain to end."
>"That's why I did it, honey. I just couldn't watch you suffer."
>"..."
>"No, that's not true. You also said that you didn't want to die. The truth is I hated you. I wanted you out of the way. I wanted my life back..."
>"James... if that were true, then why do you look so sad?"
It's kind of amazing how many people forget this conversation and when this subject comes up.
The best part is how the conversation changes slightly depending on which ending you're about to get. That one is for Leave, in In Water it goes
>"No, that's not the whole truth. You also said that you didn't want to die. The truth is... part of me hated you. For taking away my life..."
>"You killed me and you're suffering for it. It's enough, James."
While James' worst rendition, Maria, goes
>"You killed me..."
>I couldn't watch you suffer."
>"Don't make excuses, James. I know I was a burden on you. You must have hated me. That’s why you got rid of me."
>"It's true... I may have had some of those feelings. It was a long three years... I was... tired."
This is why I'll always go for the Leave ending.
Also, is the Mary that James talks to the real Mary, a conjuration of the town, or James' delusion?
everything going on with Mary being "alive" is the town and James being deluded
>I WANTED TO FRICK b***hES AGAIN
Must have played through that game like a billion times by now but the ending still gets me
It still blows my mind we have yet to get a game with this level of narrative.
>Even Angela, the most sympathetic character in the game who doesn't deserve a goddamn thing that happens to her
bullshit, I saw how she used to dress, she was practically begging for it
Stop talking about Silent Hill everyday normies, the series is really entry level to horror games or any genre realy
Silent Hill 1 and 2 are better than any other horror game
truth unlike 3 which is dull and dumb
ok israelite, you done with your subversion?
>something that gets people talking about vidya on a vidya board is a bad thing
Ok, then what should we be talking about instead?
Yeah. But that doesn't mean you can't empathize with him.
Undeniably.
No.
Technically Eddie was the more innocent of the three since he never actually murdered anyone before getting to Silent Hill
Yeah but he's fat and gross so that makes him the worst of them all.
t. Eddie
Imagine no nut november but instead it's no nut wait until your wife dies anon.
>took care of a terminally ill wife AND a child at the same time
>never snapped and euthanized his wife
>raised the infant reincarnation of the girl who effectively murdered his original daughter, all while hiding from a murderous cult
>openly acknowledges how easy it would be to abandon or kill her but persevering and going on to become an amazing father to her
Harry arguably went through a greater hell than James ever did without losing his shit.
You just know he'd be rectonned into an butthole if Konami remade his game first.
Probably. He would have to be humiliated or revealed to actually be a terrible person because no Chad White males allowed.
>He would have to be humiliated or revealed to actually be a terrible person
Yes
>because no Chad White males allowed
No, it'd be because secondaries only know Silent Hill as "that one place people that are secretly guilty of something go to". So Harry being there obviosuly must mean that he has a dark secret or something. It's why Travis, Alex and Murphy were all given plot twist backstories
>muh I might be a mysoginistic serial killer
>muh I killed my brother in the lake
>muh I might've killed my son's murderer or not or maybe I killed my son myself or maybe I was a prison guard all along because different endings = retroactive backstories
Hell you can even add Shattered Memories' Harry on that list in some endings, like the one where he's was a drunkard or fricking hookers all along
>chad is a good person
literally nobody holds this definition.
Shattered Memories is a Silent Hill 1 remake
shhh no one played it
plus gyro filters morons and even then no one wants to talk about silent hill post 4
I liked Origins
Which is funny, considering they make him an butthole in that.
Depends on the route you are. He could be a saint or a sleezeball in that game iirc but basically you are right.
Depends on the ending. He's less of an butthole and more an ordinary person filtered through the eyes of his schizo daughter. Fricking hookers and drinking aren't flaws on the same level as murdering your wife.
Harry had the power of 'coming out in the 90s' at his side
Remember the dude that made the movie changed Harry's character from a dad to a mom because he "couldn't believe a father would care that much about their child, unlike a mother"
On one hand, frick that French homosexual and the immeasurable damage he's done to the series with his shitty movie. On the other hand, I have to admire how a coomer was able to get his hands on AAA IP and use it to make an entire ass movie about his kinks.
>Silent Hill
>AAA IP
Crazy how different 2006 was, huh?
Based arrogant coomer taking initiative and owning chuds
he also said that he couldn't believe a man would be scared of Silent Hill
I hate Cristophe Ganz so fricking much. That smelly, baguette-eating homosexual made fricking dogshit that people try to delude themselves into thinking is good just because the sequel is even shittier.
>Men can't care about their kids
>le Christians... are le real evil
>hon hon hon I am a pervert
Your schizo death cult is real evil
god must be birthed
>demon hands typed this post
Are these.... demons in the thre- wait, I guess you just confirmed they are huh
Yeah it sucks we will never get a good SH movie. That ash thing annoys me more and more every year and now that guy gets to create another movie.
>art director for the original game makes a post on Twitter about how it's snow and not ash and the town was never based on Centralia
of twitter morons come in to "correct" guy who worked on the fricking games
>the ash thing
FUUUUUUUUUUUUCK I KEEP FORGETTING ALL THE moronS WHO REGURGITATE THE BURNING COAL MINE THING. As
said, the arrogance of these fricking people is astounding.
>twitter trannies all adore silent hill
>harass the hell out of ito until he's publicly annoyed in broken english
kek
It gets worse, some people still believe in the Boiler Theory
Boiler Theory? You mean that the Cult enacted the ritual to impregnate Alessa and the stress caused her psychic powers to cause the boiler explosion? Cause that is what happened and those seething homosexuals at the SH wiki can eat shit.
Oh no, it's moronic
https://imgur.com/a/GaUtZOy
One of these days you'll get tired of yelling at clouds
Seethe more, troon.
>not a single rebuttal
>immediately thinks about trannies
I'll accept the concession
>They burned her for the ritual
Goddamn. I didn't read through everything but is it explained why the nightmare places of Alessa/Heather are rusted?
I always imagined it was due to where Alessa's hospital room was located: the empty, dark and rotting hidden basement. She lived trapped in those four walls for 7 long, painful years, it's bound to be a strong part of her manifested torment.
there's a bit more said about this in 3 but also 3 has Heather...yeah...
Have you ever seen what metal that's been through a fire looks like? It rusts almost instantly after the fire is out.
>forging makes rust
whoa
>Yeah it sucks we will never get a good SH movie.
Just watch the Western movies that the games shamelessly ripped off in the first place.
Full list please besides Lost Highway and Jacob's Ladder.
I cringed when Jacob's ladder implied redemption.
>Blue Velvet
>Eraserhead
>frick, just watch anything by David Lynch
>Carrie
>Session 9
>Full Metal Jacket
>The Shining
>El Topo
>The Holy Mountain
>The Cell
>Exorcist III
>12 Monkeys
>Event Horizon
>Alice (1988)
Session 9 nails the visual style but my god it was such a shit fricking movie
The falling ash was kino. It was obviously a good idea too because it's the one thing about Silent Hill most people remember, assuming they remember anything at all about a long dead property.
idk anon, he cast a relatively attractive twink as james in the new movie. it might not be that bad.
Why does the dude on the left look like he's taken from a badly textured PS3 game
>not even bothering to cast an actor who looks at least 10% like the character
Harry Mason is the real mvp
Harry is a giga chad that would do anything for his daughter
Harry is legit a Chud because he's a male born before 1990.
I think James was designed to contrast with Harry.
Harry was the ideal. James was the realistic deconstruction.
Don't forget
>had the scarier Otherworld
James's Silent Hill was pretty tame compared to some of the shit Harry went through in that first game imo, with the exception of Pyramid Head.
Harry's otherworld was fricked up because it was actually Alessa's
Exactly. Otherworld based off the religious trauma and abuse heaped upon a little girl by a doomsday cult > Otherworld based off muh depression and guilty conscience.
He's complicated
Depends on what you think. The writers themselves don't judge him.
the whole point of the game is that the answer is anything but straightforward
Yes, he is a murderer and also a moron because he could have just waited a couple months.
he could have just not went to Silent Hill and said his wife turned over and suffocated on her pillow
it depends on the ending
in the Leave and In Water endings, I'd say not really
why didn't anyone tell me how cozy these games are
Yeah. SH1 and SH2 especially are now comfort games for me just because of their atmosphere. Literally nothing like it.
1 and 2 are cozy, 3 is a dull aching headache
EEEeee
eeeEEE
eeeeEEeEE
EEEEEEEEEE
I can hear it in my head
SH, RE and FF are all like that.
Horror movies too.
FF?
Flip Floppers
Fatal Frame. Get to playing them homosexual. It's a good horror series.
>LE PICTURE KILLS GHOST
might as well play SH4 if you're gonna play a ghost story
4 is nice, finally being free from wagglan hell.
Having finally played it, 1 is fantastic. I like it a lot and it's so damn charming even when emulating on Duckstation. Buddy of mine told me only 2 and 3 are worth playing years ago and he was dead wrong.
i love the game
i hate the walk
he is a genuinely better person than most Ganker users
I have enough self-control to not murder the people who annoy me, unlike him.
good job displaying the fact that you never played the game, homosexual
???
I literally just replayed it
This game looks dead wrong on anything but a ps2... why does upscaling it look so odd
why are morons like OP and redditors incapable of understanding that one cannot simply create little moral boxes that everyone cleanly fits into? James is just a man, like any of us. He is neither a good, nor a bad person.
but muh Hitler
I remember when the general consensus on James was that he was an ordinary man put into an impossibly shitty situation and made a terrible mistake when he was at his lowest and most unstable. Really not looking forward to all the moral absolutism all the newbies are going to bring into the discussion when the remake comes out and opinion shifts to "MARY GOOD, JAMES BAD."
REEE JAMES IS SO BAD I HATE HIM WAHHHH WHY DID MARY DIE HE'S A CHUD CANCEL SH2 IT HAS A CHUD
If JAMES BAD isn't true Silent Hill canon™ why is he making this face while holding a noose?
he's at the end of his rope
Everything is black and white. I am very smart
I really, really hope people will see an inch deeper than this.
Look at the Dead By Daylight community and their opinions on Silent Hill every time new content is added. That's what you're going to get.
I play DBD and I was furious that it was Pyramid Head and Cheryl. Ito even designed the White Hunter for DBD but they said "lolno gib pyramid head." Though I think you put the blame mostly on Konami for this. They've never really given a shit about their franchises beyond printing money.
Oh really the shitty zoomer cash printing machine doesn’t care about SH2 lore, no way.
No, dipshit. Konami doesn't care.
>western game devs understanding Silent Hill at all
If Origins and Downpour didn't tell you that Westerners didn't understand Silent Hill I have a bridge I'd like to sell you.
Weird how you'd leave Homecoming behind when it's the game trying the hardest to be like the SH movie, and also the one with the least excuses in as far as development goes for how it turned out the way it did. Like the team that finished Origins not even being the team that started it.
I meant to type Homecoming but I kept thinking of Downcoming for some reason. Pardon my memory.
It's okay fren
Yeah nah homepouring was actually not that bad, pretty decent 7 if Im being fair
The only good thing about downcoming was Wheeler dying over and over again and some-fricking how giga-homie'd it till the end
Yes it fricking was, what are you on?
Don't misuse swear words. You have nothing to swear about, you frick.
How dare you swear where I might see it!
chatbot spotted
What about my comment implied that I didn’t realize that you colloidal moron? Yea obviously Konami doesn’t give a frick, that’s a given, but if you expected accurate lore from that other garbage twitch bait shit then I’ve got a bridge to sell you hurrrrrrr
Discussion is so doomed when that game comes out but at least they can't take the original from us
Anon, take a look at this thread. Discussion for this series has been fricked for a long time. We had more peace when we thought it was dead for good.
because things must be simple, clean and quick like how Hitler is evil.
I'm playing silent Hill 2 for the first time and I feel moronic. I had to look up a walkthrough to figure out that I needed to put the juice in the garbage chute.
honestly that's one of the dumbest "puzzles" in the game, it generally gets better after that and the apartments
Leave this thread before you get spoiled even more
hes going to spoil him self regardless due to the moronic puzzles
no one in their right mind would look in the other side of the room of the grand father clock
no one would expect a man with a pyramid for a head!
I already know the biggest spoiler that James killed his wife because of his need to coom. At least that's what I've skimmed from years of silent Hill discussion I've scrolled past. I just wanted to know if I missed something super obvious about the juice.
Thanks anon. The apartments have been kind of annoying. I already planned to stick with it but you've emboldened me now.
It's much more than that, and I hope you get that from playing.
That's probably the only one you'll need to do that for. Adventure games were still in recent memory when this was developed.
that puzzle is dogshit, dont guide anything else. That is the ONLY pure shit one.
Yes
But that doesn't mean he can't be forgiven.
but at least he isn't Heather
I really hate the idea of the In Water ending being canon because it means James learned literally nothing
it's the one you get for sucking at the game, at least.
There is no canon ending. That's the point of having multiple endings in the first place
Only homosexuals online will try to convince you about In Water being canon due to "muh Guy Cihi muh Frank Sunderland muh Twin Perfect"
the town make heem stoopid
It's no surprise that guy pads his videos to 10 hours or so otherwise people would quickly notice the quality of his media analysis skills
Expecting the worthless NEET failures here to properly understand the nuance of James as a character is a futile effort. Everything is black and white for them. Don’t bother.
......Except literally every post in this thread correctly states what he did was bad with an asterisk.
>le killing le women because you want le coom is...LE NOT BAD
you don’t even deserve a (you), what utterly pathetic bait
Frick off subhuman christgay, moron and turd
>game with literal multiple endings based on YOUR actions and decisions
This shit makes up for all the morons beating the dead horse
Does killing your wife because she won't frick you make you a bad person?
Frick no.
In olden times that? as totally normal.
They took my foreskin, I took their lives
>That's why I did it honey. I just couldn't watch you suffer. No, that's not true. The truth is, I hated you! I wanted you out of the way. I wanted my life back...
>James... if that were true, then why do you look so sad?
please stop anon I don't want to cry again
>...Mary...?!
>James... Please do something for me...
...
>Go on with your life...
I liked downpour
How?
Look! its Pyramid Head! woohoo!
yeah I will never defend Origins's shithouse story but the gameplay is tight and as good as 1-3
It was just a rehash of 2 which is why I liked it too.
It has the atmosphere, characters, and themes but it definitely needed a more able team behind it. I feel bad for Vatra especially when I remember seeing an article or tweet of the developers asking Konami for more time or more resources.
thats stupid. all three are suffering their own, personally created purgatory (not hell). they cant let go of their bad feefees, so it torments them. theyre not bad at all. someone add a ITS TRAUMA sticker to my post
idk I think the guy who constantly thinks about murdering people, kills a dog, then tries to kill James was a pretty bad guy
Wow it’s almost as if the game quite literally goes over this quite clearly? Did anyone in this fricking thread actually play this game?
Angela literally carries around a knife covered in the blood from Walter's circumcision and you think she isn't bad?
did the wiki guy really say that?
I don't know but it's pretty obvious that's what her knife was used for
bad people are all traumatized, that is exactly why they're bad people
No anon, some people are just bad.
t. a bad, bad man
Leroy Brown? That you?
Shitface McCumstein, is that israelite?
>murderer
im gonna go with yeah. that doesn't mean you can't like him or relate to him.
FRICKING CHUD SHOULD HAVE ENDED HIMSELF BEFORE SHE DIED AND LET HER FRICK OTHER MEN.
all these monkey brains going irrational over PUNISH SOMEONE FOR CRIME OOOK OOOK! but forget that if a man shows true and honest remorse for what was done, it's because they were pushed past the point. hell, James could have left his wife to rot and banged some hookers in TJ, he has no real reason to stick around if he didnt love her. if he was truly evil, it would have killed her asap. but he did it all because he loved her and struggle to do whats best for her.
>Actually killing your wife when you want to frick hookers is holy
>but forget that if a man shows true and honest remorse for what was done
if you murder your wife you probably belong in prison even if you cry a lot afterward
Why do you think his personal manifestation is a huge dude with a huge knife that enjoys raping and murdering people?
Anyone else get one?
I agree guys he is bad. We need to get him.
>KRRRRRRRRRTRRRRRRTRTRRRRRRRTRRRRTRKRRRRRRTTRRRRRRRKRRRRTTTTRRRRKRRRRTRRRRKRRRRTTTTRRRRRKKKRRRRTTRRRRRKRRRRRRTTRRRRRRKRRRRTTTTKRRRRR
Idk how my self-control post has anything to do with the acknowledgement of one's wrongs or remorse
Meds now
because you fail to understand the reasons as to why he did so, hence your brain dead post
He ending exposition says exactly why he did it. You're just a dumb autistic homosexual projecting shit onto people
Right, so do you understand why your reasoning of “muh self control” is completely meaningless and moronic when Silent Hill 2 is quite literally a game about a normal man like you and I commiting a horrible action due to dire conditions?
james is there in the first place because he murdered someone and got away with it
And if I was a normal man who got so tee'd up from semen retention I murdered my sick wife I'd deserve to suffer and die like James.
If you believe James did what he did due to the need to coom then all the power to you anon, I hope you find comfort in knowing that was your interpretation of the narrative.
NTA, but yes, that is objectively a reason why he killed mary. that's why there's big titty nurses and pairs of nice legs trying to kill him. and his personal punisher is associated with rape and murder.
Ito confirmed that Pyramid Head isn't meant to be a manifestation of James' sexual frustration and aggression, nor is he raping the mannequins in his introduction scene. He's murdering them, because he's symbolically killing James' delusions to guide him into coming to terms with what he did.
Pyramid Head is an alcoholic serial killer rapist cannibal.
Ito confirmed what Pyramid Head's knife was really for.... and it ain't pretty
Literally artist's cope and not confirmed by anything but his own pathetic tweet
Well I'd rather hear what the director and writer think about this scene instead of the artist.
Considering he created the fricking character, I'd say his word is just as good.
He drew the character. The writing wasn't him
Considering you're a gay sack of crap, you can "fricking" go frick yourself.
P.S. We're Behind It In Time
Well now hold on, nobody said that.
What an odd thing to say
I really don't since many people do not mentally break when faced with a horrid situation. My childhood was similar to SH4's Walter and I'm not a serial killer yet, thus I am better than James for now.
The narrative is exaggerated so that we could play a game. Obviously people usually don’t kill their sick spouses. However it server a narrative purpose. Don’t be purposely obtuse.
I don’t at all disagree with that. Sexuality plays a huge part in our attachment with others hence its place here. I just feel annoyance to anons reducing the discussion to such a low level.
Oh right also he was sick of having to visit her and shit.
See
And not being able to frick her
That's because people like you can mentally ignore it throughout their day-to-day lives(sheeple)
>I WANTED TO COOM, MARY
MARY....WHERE THE FRICK ARE YOU. I WAITED THREE WEEKS, BABY WANTED TO FRICK.
You are a golden c**t. Frick (you), get off *my* internets and go have a nice day, gay
lower your tone before i knock some teeth loose, queer
Why did you reply to me? You know perfectly well why I take issue with your comments, you pompous and ignorant frickstain, and if you want to play the tough guy you are free to visit me any time.
Guess you already know where I live!
Yes because he kilt Pyramid Head and Pyramid Head is/was cool.
Yet another moron conflating legality and morality. Worthless post.
THE LAW IS MORALITY.
SHE WAS 17 AND 364 DAYS YOUNG.
Well most of these things aren't true anyway
You can really tell from the responses in this thread who doesn't know what it feels like to be the primary caregiver for someone who's terminally ill. I think it's easy for people to picture it, but only conceptually. The grinding, smoldering reality of it day in and day out is really too much to understand. You're trapped in this horrible limbo with a person who's both alive and dead. You can't move on and have a life, because you love that person too much and want to care for them. But you're also suffering and alone, and eventually that pain begins to change you. You start thinking things you never imagined yourself thinking about someone in a million years, especially someone you love. They're not getting better, they're just going to get worse, a lot worse. And you both just want it to be over.
Nobody gets it except me..... I'm the only one who can understand this extremely common situation.....
That's right, bröther, the female of the species exists only in how it services the male caregiver.
>We're going to get threads like these every day for at least a year once the remake comes out
How do we know James wasn't molested by a hot nurse when he broke his arm when he was 7 and that's why he's the way he is?
Guilt is you realizing you're being excluded by your actions so you react in a way that would maximize your chances of fitting in with the rest of society. This is why it's said sociopaths aren't able to feel guilt. Naturally, they have absolutely no interest in being part of the group. If they could, they would get rid of everyone except those who serve them a purpose.
Yes it sucks when people hurt you so we evolved to feel bad when we hurt others resulting in people hurting each other less and having sex instead.
>Sociopaths are the real humans
whoa
Actual sociopath here. We feel guilt as much as, if not more than, anybody else. If you are not feeling guilt right now, you are literally not even human.
Whoa
Mary.... WHERE THE FRICK ARE YOU?! I have a court date to attend for my crimes!
>2023
>almost 2024
>anons still cant grasp SH2 themes
lmao and e-girlng.
Considering the fact that I've now lived through the experience of watching someone you care about wither away and die, I have to say that James is neither bad or good. He's just a very sad man who did something he deeply regrets. Morality doesn't play into it.
Pussy
I hope your brother never gets cancer and dies, anon.
The original Team Silent should regroup and make a new IP.
It probably is too late at this point. I know Ito has said one of the female team members, one he apparently even almost married it seemed like, died some years ago from cancer or something.
They are. It's called Slitterhead.
Is making a genuinely morally grey character all it took to make SH2's writing get seen as among the best in video games?
We are currently in an Era in which almost every main character needs to be "quirky" and "epic" especially if it's tied to AAA smack. It's the reasons characters than that stray from that tend to be more noticed. That's not to say you can't do quirky right or that the should be a somber character with emotional issues all the time man that entire troupe is overstaying its run.
I think it also helped that it wasn't afraid to delve into taboo topics that even games today won't touch. Like I can't think of a single game other than this one where incest and euthanasia are major plot points.
>Like I can't think of a single game other than this one where incest and euthanasia are major plot points.
Play indie games
Play Japanese games
doesn't deal with those themes specifically but an equally mature and adult horror game I played was https://shop.redcandlegames.com/app/devotion
Would recommend it if you want something similar. I dream of the timeline where Red Candle got to do a Silent Hill game instead of fricking Bloober
>Morally grey
What's grey about murdering your wife?
lmafo
roflmao
you must be one of those nu-males I keep hearing about.
Wasn't asking you b***h
Chad coming through.
I wish I could like these games, but they play so aggressively awful that I can't make it through any of them.
>Mario 64 camera
>buildings with 40 rooms (90% of them are locked)
>LOUD NOISES
>puzzles are embarrassing no matter the difficulty
>stories so one dimensional they need to be carried by the world and character design
If it wasn't for the music and the design I'd say they were completely worthless.
Missing out on a great experience due to your inability to enjoy things for what they are which hints at a much deeper flaw in your person, but you're probably suffering the consequences of that in your life already
I enjoyed the first Silent Hill game. How the sequels propelled the games to worst gameplay than a PS1 title is actually impressive.
You said you couldn't make it through any of them, if you enjoyed the first game then that makes you a liar. If you didn't play it you're a liar as well. Not sure why you'd back yourself into a corner like that and expect anyone to want to engage with someone misleading them.
Yet here you are rewarding with attention, you imbecile.
Filtered by Lynchian kino, it happens.
