Oh tell me more about the 100% unexplored undeveloped artistic axis of interactivity, frickface.

Film has been around for over a hundred years and out of a million movies painstakingly made, maybe a handful are ART, are EXPERIENCES, that can CHANGE A HUMAN.

Video games/interactivity has EXACTLY ZERO works of art, or even inklings of clues of what direction to go to possibly find art within it. But it won't be found.

The world is a stage, as they say. When I stub my toe, I am given a revelation by God, that I might sublimate my will to anger with the comfort in knowing that all I ever have been, and am in this moment, is for a given purpose: my life as an expression of God's great work.

Fun is subjective. I like to be forced to overcome stupid odds (helps if the game cheats). Bullet hell games and things like that are fun to me. Some people prefer to build shit in a multiplayer setting and go with Minecraft. That's their own perception of fun. In the end, you play games because they're fun, but that definition of fun comes from your own preferences. I can't see someone willingly putting a lot of time and effort into a game they don't find fun, unless it's to make a video of how awful it is. In that, the process itself is the fun.

I think a better term than "fun" should be "enjoyable." And there are various ways that someone can enjoy something. You may like survival horror because you enjoy the thrill of being stressed out and scared. You may like extremely difficult games because you enjoy being able to overcome harsh challenges. You may accept some annoying shit because you know (or hope) you'll enjoy the payoff that will come later. But if I don't enjoy playing a game in some fashion then I drop it.

  36. 2 years ago

The purpose of a video game is to be fun.
It is a toy, a diversion, something to engage the consumer.

There can be artistic merit in them but absence of artistic merit does not negate the value of a game. Fun is also a metric and the amount of fun a game provides can not grant it any depth.
A game that's not fun is like a barren woman and a game that only provides the most surface level of fun is like a prostitute on the street. The ideal game is fun in ways that stimulate the player to grow and think.

A fun game still has to make you suffer sometimes for it to really be impactful. It's what makes a game feel like a real adventure and journey. Older games discovered this by accident since their real goal was to just kill you so you put another quarter in, and then it was to pad the game for time. But the feeling of coming out of a miserable pokemon cave was one of the best feelings you could get from games at the time. The whole game doesn't have to be CBT but torturing the player a little bit makes the fun a lot more fun.

I'm not having an argument about "art" unless you can give a clear definition of "art" that includes everything that has traditionally been called "art" but does not include things that are not traditionally called "art".
Any arguing done without having an agreed upon definition just becomes an argument of semantics.
    Have a e-girl.

      >Any arguing done without having an agreed upon definition just becomes an argument of semantics.
If everybody agreed upon a definition of what constituted "art", wouldn't they have to agree on what to take away from any image they look at? The difference is its significance, and while I agree that you can abuse this kind of thing you can't really throw it away either without throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

You will never settle on a definition of "art" that satisfies everyone, nor the conditions you're speaking of. It is one of the most charged in our vocabulary. People do not agree on what it is, and that is why art exists. It cannot exist without that disagreement.

        Anonymous

Meaningless babbling. You're just proving my point. Arguments about whether something is art or not are just arguments about what art is. Since art has no set definition, arguments about what art is never reach a consensus because it's up to personal definition. How can you logically argue about something that is not logical? And if it's up to personal definition, then the entire concept makes no fricking sense to begin with. I could replace art with any random sound and it would just as much sense i.e. kamplix. I think video games and music are kamplix but movies are not kamplix. Prove me wrong.

you can over design a gun to make it a work of art, but then it loses its original purpose of being a weapon since it isn't likely to be fired; it no longer is a gun, it's art. same with games. if the intention is not to be fun, it ceases to be a game.

Games exist to entertain, this nebulous idea of "fun" that will have five different definitions from five different people just muddies the waters. If you're playing a video game and you're captivated by it, whether it's because of pure gameplay or some artsy shit seems pretty irrelevant. It's performing its job either way.
