Even regardless of games, early-mid 2000s felt sunnier, both IRL and on camera (think of early Avril Lavinge videos or something, it's a whole thing I could write out but whatever), but games were clearly a huge part of what set the mood. Feels like some sort of weird alternate reality.

probably just developers wanting to show off water physics

This. Gotta admit, there's something inherently comfy about a beach level. Probably my favorite was the Phantasy Star Online beach levels, where you could find hidden alcoves of items, or those little sidequests where you could go out at night for special parties. I miss that game.

Real water physics have never been tried. Even in Sunshine, it was just a basic particle effect. Developers now are still too scared to try and have realtime fluid simulations.

What would even be the added value in adding realistic physics to a game unless it's directly tied to gameplay? Fake water systems are good enough most of the time, plus there are much more important tech features to integrate like working fricking mirrors that devs still struggle with to this day.

mirrors are just a fun aesthetic thing you look at for 5 seconds. water physics can enhance gameplay and visuals a frickton. you see sea/lakes in every game basically for a long time.

I watched a video with Subnautica devs about this. it's easier put everything in the lowest gravity, with fake bubbles in the first person view. One of the devs explained it's impossible create realistic simulations of the physics of a single water droplet in a regular PC, faking with low gravity in "air" is better.

It's a cultural touchstone. If you had a computer during that era you saw that wallpaper at least once, and it's nice enough that a lot of people didn't change it. Even if you changed it on your own computer, you just need to scoot your chair over to the guy next to you and there it is again on his screen.

This has always felt like a weird observation to me because it hinges on Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy X both existing.
Those are games made by the same company sharing a lot of key staff members, not to mention a lot of Kingdom Hearts's initial themes and ideas regarding dreams and traveling to different worlds was reminiscent of FFX, it's no wonder they put you on an island with Tidus and Wakka at the start of the game.
As for the others it's like... Sonic almost always starts in some kind of coastline level and Mario I guess did happen to have a summer vacation theme for its game around this time.
But like that's basically it, there aren't many more notable examples of "summer vibes" in games from this era. I guess you could classify Wind Waker too?

The only turning point in Occupy Wallshit was the lesson that groups are extremely easy to subvert and dissolve via ideological means. The banks and other corpotations learned that well and homosexuals praise them now for throwing rainbows on their logos. That's why the google trends for 'racism' reporting from places like the New York Times skyrocketed after it. It's why the US is so racially divided now after not being so in the late 90s/early 2000s. Back when juding someone on the content of their character was still a worthwile endeavor

No, Black folk, you're just fricking old and uneducated.
The retinas in your eyes degrade over time meaning all color fades greyer and greyer with age. The facts are even the games you thought look saturated out of control wasn't really that oversaturated and the games you think look grey now isn't overally washed out as you think it is.

The truth is most things colorful pander to autistics and kids and adults naturally transition to grey suits, cars, houses, etc because color degrades with them the more you age. In other words; color didn't change, it's always you that's what did.

Do you have a single fact to back that up or just talking out your ass? You call others uneducated but claim color dulls with age to a degree significant enough that it causes older people to prefer gray dull palettes. Wouldn't the case be the opposite, where they instead seek brighter more vibrant colors to compensate for their loss of perception? As happens with old sound engineers who dial up the treble due to the falloff of their ability to hear high end frequencies as they age? And what about the bright bombastic fashion of the 60s or 80s, or even the middle ages where they used shit tons of dyes?

I can't confirm the world thing but it is proven that as you age the lenses in your eyes yellow making it harder to see various shades of blue.

I think it was just the nearly complete lack of secret areas or interesting terrain to explore, with only a handful of exceptions. You do a 360 turn with the camera, and you've essentially seen all each island has to offer. All the items are usually just floating mid-air along with the smattering of floating level design spaghetti, so there's no reason to have hidden alcoves or caves everywhere. Basically, I can forgive the janky gameplay (since I know they'll never really improve it aside from a few minor touch-ups to say that they did) but for frick's SAKE can we PLEASE get some actual fricking open world level design in Frontiers 2? I beg you. Even that Big The Cat open world shitpost game from a few years ago was more interesting to explore than most of Frontiers' islands, and I'm not even kidding. I sincerely wish I was. The fact that pic related is STILL somehow relevant to 3D Sonic level design discussion makes me sick. And now that I think about it, it's actually worse than that now, because you can run around in a big wide open space like the top panel, but there's just no reason to since 80% of all the items you need are on "this shit" in the bottom panel.

Frontiers 2 desperately needs a SOVL injection into its art direction, too, to stay on topic. Like god damn I feel like I needed some Prozac playing Frontiers sometimes.
            >but that's the direction they were going for
Yeah, and I'm saying it was dumb and bland. I want a Sonic game I feel like I want to escape to, not from.

Politics is a mess, the economy is a mess, life is harder than it was. Everything seems better then because we were happier overall then.

One thing worth noting is that people sounded different. If you watch old news clips, I'm not sure how to put it into words but their speaking doesn't sound the way it does today. It sounds a little more refined with almost a slight accent to it. I don't mean a southern accent, California accent or anything like that. But there's a difference, and it sounds better in my opinion.

            Anonymous

To add to this, people will say it's because with new generations, accents are going away because we're all connected. But I think there's more to it than that, because I've never heard anyone in real life no matter the age, sound like they do in those old clips.

Nah the sky (And landmarks until the gubmint decides it needs to be pulled down for israelite gold) is one of the few things that don't really change much from generations.

It's social trends and sweeping changes to how people act that ultimately affects how we view the past. Not sure what "the darkness" means to you but I'll just use an example:

        >9//11 happens
        >Age of fearmongering starts
        >Sensationalist news media
        >Bunch of shit gets cancelled because "muh towers"
        >Cover shooters and military shit becames super popular
        >Counterculture of ironic journalism starts. Shit like Micheal Moore calling Americans fat warmongers (Which isn't wrong)
        >Gobmint decides now is the perfect time for mass middle eastern migration
        >Travelling anywhere becomes a fricking nightmare because of customs
        >Fearmongering never went away. Media now overblows everything as some supervirus or war or terrorism

I know there's like jobs for people who watch social trends and how they affect culture. Even TV shows like Breaking Bad change society in big ways. It's fascinating and horrible at the same time even though I hated the 90s in retrospect I do miss the freedom we had and the fact we don't worship black guys but I'm rambling now

they sun was actually yellow and warm back then, sometime around 2012 it changed to the cold white sun we have now

You're all moronic. Even if I agree that things were better back then, the world (and sun) only look more cold and gray because you now wear glasses with blue light reflective glare. If you take them off, everything looks the same as it used to, including the sun. You probably didn't wear glasses as a kid, so of course it seems like things were brighter back then. Take your glasses off right now to test it if you don't believe me.

they sun was actually yellow and warm back then, sometime around 2012 it changed to the cold white sun we have now

I don't know if it's a psyop or something, but I always associate 2000s with sunlight.
I don't know why. Sunlight, clean skies, maybe a beach. Perhaps part of it is the Windows XP desktop theme and design in general, but I feel like it's not a full story.
Just thinking back to those times, especially the first half (2000-2006), I feel like there was literally much more sunshine (and I don't live in a sunny region at all), and generally things were more bright.
Now, some may equate it with childhood, and maybe that's partially true.
However, i was born in 1992, so I do remember at least ~5 years of the 90s, and yet I don't have this associatation. In fact, the 90s in my head are much more associated with something gloomy and atmospheric, while 2000s are sunny weather.
2010s don't conjure up such images, even if 2010-2015 were quite a happy time for me and I was still in Uni for most of it, so I still had summer holidays and loads of free time.
I know it's a total schizo post, but I never get to bring this up anywhere, so may as well do it here.

false, summer existed for 2003-05 as well

Are astrologists the original schizos? How did they recover from the discovery of the 13th astrological sign?

              Anonymous

astrology is empirical. things can be determined to work or not work, by trying it out.
nasa etc have discovered a bajillion asteroids and comets and lots of clowns talk about how those are significant too. like shilling penny stocks and shitcoins.
the question for stocks and coins is whether price goes up. the question for astrology is whether it accurately models the world.
and it works. on twelve signs.
this ophiuchus shifting the entire system to divide into thirteen implies twelve sign does not work, which is demonstrably false. compare discoveries of asteroids which also don't work, contrast the discovery of uranus neptune pluto which do work.

I live on a beach in Hawaii. Plenty of Jap culture but I get all the hapa piggu Hawaii/haole mutts. It's amazing. They're like asians but with sexier looking skin and big fat ass with big breasts with large nipples and hair that's made to be held firmly by a haloe (white) man. They're literally built for colonization by my below average length (and girth) white wiener.

Funny how the only believable part of this reply is the living on a beach part. Even though lots with a literal grass hut on the ocean front cost a million dollars or more that's way more believable than ever trying to claim that your racist chud incel ass would ever get laid. Even the ugliest Karen would glance over you and go for Tyrone in a heartbeat lol. Enjoy dying alone. Your blood line doesn't deserve to carry on

The sun definitely looked/felt different in the 2000s and prior. It's even more apparent if you look at old photos from the 60s or prior. The way the sunlight looks is just different, I don't know how to describe it. It was warmer. It felt warmer on your skin too. People's skin tones were also slightly different. It's almost like the sun got replaced with a flourescent lightbulb sometime after 2010.

The difference is literally film stock vs digital pictures. They capture the light differently. FIlm has an innate glow, color bleeding and bloom that people associate with the past or movies.

Meanwhile, modern digital sensors take the picture/video as it is. More faithfully with none of those embellishments. Thats why you have glass filters for bloom to produce image aberrations such as film cameras.

Then you have obviously design and visual trends, like the modern trend of low contrast, naturalistic light, low saturation, almost like they forgot to grade the flat footage (marvel civil war, dune, etc)

The world had more magic in the past because we had limited technology.

In the past: When planning a vacation, you could only learn about and plan it through travel guides, magazines, etc. Then you went to experience something you knew little about. Around your neck is a film camera and you had a finite amount of photos you could take. You thoughtfully took each photo and made sure it was special. You develop the photos and put them in a photo album to look back on.

Today: You can watch hundreds of videos and travel vlogs for whichever place you want to vacation to. In a few hours, you can learn more than someone from the early 00's and prior could in a month. When you finally take the vacation, you bring your phone and thoughtlessly snap random photos every 2 seconds, of every action you take, every food you eat, and you document the entire journey. Those photos and video all get stored on your laptop where you never look at them again.

This is of course one example of hundreds of ways technology has made the world less magical.

Smartphones and social media are the biggest mistake of the 21st century.

      Anonymous

This is true, technology and the internet basically allows us to simulate experiences without leaving the comfort of our homes. I feel like this also explains why Zoomers go through brief periods of transforming their personality or worldview only to drop it and transform again a month later later. It's a mix of FOMO and social media allowing them to easily dip their toes in different interests or hobbies. Humans weren't meant to do everything in one lifetime, though. We've always dedicated ourselves to one or two passions, and a lot of Zoomers just end of having shallow, predictable takes on everything, but present little nuance or original contribution to anything.

        Anonymous

I feel like its because most zoomers are teenagers or in their early twenties. Tgats when people are usually still figuring out who they are.

To be fair, crisis is what made social services popular. These days almost no one can afford a house or if they do, they struggle with money.

Internet became escapism from a shitty reality. Then we have cases like China that, instead of improving their mens lives they are literally fighting drawn fictional 2d girls KEK

Like, no man can live in a pod house, work 15 hours every day, have less women without becoming crazy so internet is escapism now.

There is a GOOD aspect of it though, its that kids these days learn the harsh reality faster, which is why teachers and college are seething, since the kids understood its better to have fun in your teens over spend your youth studying jailed for something that doesnt exist

This is why anime and gacha are so popular now. There is no fricking way you dont fall into depression if you watch TV.
Also kids are traveling, they just have no money so they are going with the flow

Like, man, when I was living in a big house (before covid fricked all my plans), I miss my minigym, walk around, go to the beach...I'm now back with my mother saving money, but you cant fricking tell me I want to make plans with my mother there and my moronic brother taking 70% of the space of the house, in a much tiny room.
Also travel became kinda dangerous with so muc immigration

I’ve always thought about this while growing up. The 90s had a sort of darkness to it, that’s the imagery I get when I think about that time period, but the 00s I always associate with a summer vibe.

Just out of curiosity, how old are you? Because I'm 32 and I sort of get what you mean. I associate the 00's with summer too, so I guess in a way the 90's could be seen as darkness. But maybe I think that because the 90's are a bit more blurry to me memory-wise, considering I was born in 91.

It could also simply be because the media we grew up with had a summer vibe.

The "SJW/woke" boogeyman is more of a symptom rather than a cause. I believe that the big problem was the proliferation of iPhones and social media, which started in 2009 and crossed the event horizon in 2013. 2009-2012 is the last era I have any amount of nostalgia for, but it was definitely the turning point.

It absolutely did. The fact that iPhones were essentially nonexistent and social media like Twitter and Instagram hadn't yet taken over everything alone made it extremely different from pretty much any post-2012 year. 2008 is the last year that felt more like ten years before than ten years after IMO. 2009-2010 felt 50/50, and 2011-2012 were the first years that felt more like ten years later than ten years before.

I'm at the point where I'm just going to live like it's the early 00's and prior. I'm sick of most new games, new movies, etc. I'm going to start a physical collection of the things I loved in the past. Get CDs and DVDs, etc. I also plan on getting a film camera and may even downgrade to a dumbphone. There seems to be a sort of anti-smartphone movement and I'm all for it.

There are a ton of reasons why the world has gotten worse, but modern technology and smartphones has destroyed so much. The only way to go back, is by going back. Set an example. Get rid of the modern stuff that's ruining everyone.

The correct way is to merge the old and the new. I've got a high end CRT, I barely use it. Why? Because I can get 90% of the same picture on my 4k monitor, and the actual picture is almost twice the size, because at 4:3 it works out as 35 inches. I can emulate everything I want, no loading times, no disc changing, I can fast forward through slow menus.

Owning CDs isn't going to make you any happier. Just download the MP3s, homosexual. DVDs had shit quality, you can get the BD rip for free.

Consumerism won't make you happy. Consumerism rots humanity, instead of elevating it. Just appreciate the things you have and try to create interesting new ones and connect with other people. That's what people tried to do back then, they tried to be part of something.

Been buying a bunch of the games I missed out on when I was a teen brand new sealed when the current retro game price situation hadn't started, bought the first three albums of Paramore physically and still get all my music by ripping CDs on my hard drive. Getting older movies on DVD has been a blast, there's that certain charm to all that preparing you used to do back in the day and you don't need to keep up monthly payments in order to have access to the stuff. We've even been digitizing some old VHS stuff with my partner.

Yeah, that's what immediately comes to mind of I think of the time around 2006. If I had to point out specific media for that look it would be Steins;Gate, Persona 3, Mirror's Edge, shit like that.
I think the "Lost Decade" in Japan and its influence on nip media might be the prime reason for that. Blue can really be a cold and depressive color.

Everything was more physical and in the present. Families were more close knit. You still read paper magazines and journals, fast food restaurants were an experience, kids played in the streets a lot more. People were outside and live outside more.

The real reason is because around that time movies/games more commonly used high saturation color grading, it's a stylistic things that makes things seem warmer and more inviting. But like most things it started to seem passe after a while and people stopped doing it outside of throwbacks.
Watching the collective alzheimers of everyone in this thread who unironically think that colors were brighter in real life back then started out hilarious and then just got sad.

Its just because memories are fallible. They fade and change over time and get conflated with other things. Any time I think of the 1980s I picture everything with chromatic aberration and vhs distortion. The 60s all looks like a polaroid picture. The 1900s-1940s is black and white. And the 19th century is all a big oil painting.

I think sometimes a lot of devs, either because of each other or independently, discover or notice a certain theme or artstyle and just happen to think its cool at once. I noticed the same thing with that one IRL lake where the sky seamlessly connects with the water appearing in many different games, Tekken 7 (Infinite Azure) and Kingdom Hearts 3 (Final World) being the ones mainly coming to mind.

        >that one IRL lake where the sky seamlessly connects with the water
I'm having a hard time conceptualizing this.

Apparently they're called salt lakes/salt flats. The other thing I missed is that because there's a layer of salt or something just under the water surface people can actually walk along them and it looks like they're walking on the water. It's pretty insane to see that it's a real thing.

Not OP, but I think the dark games from the late 90s/early 2000s were cooler than modern dark games as well. I still like to make hl1 maps just to hang around in.

Not really deep, Easy way to show Graphical Prowess by showcasing, Lighting (Tropical environments are Sunny and with water you can play with lighting, shadow and reflection and visual distortion making it pretty variable (IE: Seeing things through water, or Heat Haze), so a Sunny Watery location like that was attractive to sell the technological upgrade of your series at that point of time, if obviously not the only one. And as flawed as people like to see them now "Water Physics" were something Devs liked to brag about and reviewers brought up like if it was a Miiverse post.

Its was just the trend of the era in gaming and media this stuff happens all the time its why early 90's is associated with edginess and depression its just sorta were media as a whole was at the time. This is usually because people burned out on the previous trend.

Obviously the 90/00's were better artistically, culturally, socially, everything.
But one thing I never see people mention is CRTs. CRTs didn't emit the same garbage blue light that LCDs do.
Turn on those blue light filters, people!

It's because Japanese video game devs were passionate and obsessed with tropical countries, for instance for Sonic Adventure, Sonic team travelled to Quintana Roo, Mexico just to get an idea of a authentic beach level. They also took pictures of the sand and sea, which are the textures used in Emerald Coast.
The music is mostly inspired Bossa Nova/ Samba, irrestibly upbeat vibes that evoke images of melancholic sunsets, azure skies, joy.

listen to that bass, it's absolutely sublime:

Even games like Dark Souls, in all of its gloom and darkness, has a sort of ethereal quality to it. People are joyless these days and most indie games are about depression. I mostly blame Unreal Engine for reducing barrier to entry and making games so SOULLESS

this music for me evokes some of the same feelings that the older SEGA games did,
made by another Japanese guy who was obsessed with Brazil

studies have shown that colors appear less vivid as you age because the receptors in your eyes deteriorate, aside from the fact that filters and gritty visuals have become more popular

Frick off Black person, I am 30 years old.
I don't go outside THAT much due to work, but it was the same in 2006 due to other stuff.
I went outside a lot between 2017-2019 as I was working freelance and didn't have much shit to do, and my opinion still stands. Sadly COVID fricked everything up.
