Mario 64 has three water levels, and the high point of all of them is when it's dry.
It has one of the most elaborate control schemes in the world on land, but when Mario gets in the water you have A to swim and B to swim like shit and nothing else. Hope you enjoy moving around the camera because there isn't much else to do underwater
...To think that the perfect formula for underwater controls is so easy but nobody ever implemented it >controls exactly like on land >can jump in mid-air infinite times >low gravity
but NO, we have to smear molasses all over the controls, and remove all attacks
>Good water controls give you full 360 degree swimming
do these exist?
No.
And they can't exist, and it's not a platformer anymore.
With infinite jumps you can actually build a level with obstacles and it can be fun, and you can jump on enemies, and it can be a GAME.
It would feel BETTER than being on dry land.
Imagine that, a game where you're GLAD it's a water level.
I'd think the underwater areas were either felt too small or too big and what was there to fight would typically slingshot around a lot, weapon movesets varied somewhat too. And then there's some funny cases like Plesioth in 3U being easier to fight down there than on land. Nonetheless it's got potential and deserves another attempt.
Spyro stands as one of the greatest redemptions when it comes to water. From getting hurt each time he touches it in the first game to a very smooth movement underwater,as if he was born for it from the start.
Is this meant to be a bad water level? I love the water levels in super mario bros. The comfy sea music and the squid sprites and the floaty feel of being underwater but still having good control.
Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask.
Unironically the worst 3D Zelda dungeon
That boss was a pain in the ass

Good water controls give you full 360 degree swimming, not infinite jumps. Frick jump paddling.
