This, Super Paper Mario is super overrated.
Don't get me wrong the story/writing is great (Definitely way more creative than TTYD) and that's what most people remember, but the gameplay of Super Paper Mario takes a big nosedive near the end and starts getting really tedious/boring. It baffles me how I usually see people complaining about Thousand Year Door's backtracking segment but then fail to completely remember garbage like the OverThere where not only 50% of the level is backtracking if you know exactly what to do and can make up a majority of the section if you don't know what to do.
I'd say that Super Paper Mario is a very mediocre game if you average out the writing/story/creativity with the gameplay/level design, but people have forgotten the latter half of that at this point for some reason. I'd chalk it up to trauma.

        >but the gameplay of Super Paper Mario takes a big nosedive near the end
It's bad from the start. They made a terrible platformer with a horrible feel, when they easily could've requested advice or aid from the more experienced platformer developers at Nintendo. The 3D mechanic misguided too and boiled down to "press this button to check if there's anything invisible on every screen."

          Anonymous

I wouldn't say Super Paper Mario's gameplay is bad at the start, more like just not very interesting and a little plain.
The thing is that SPM is a game that's carried a lot by not just its narrative but also the interesting contexts it puts you in. For example Mimi's mansion doesn't have good or interesting gameplay if you really boil the game down to what you have to do, but the context is entertaining and interesting enough that you feel much more compelled to continue going through gameplay. It's fun because you have a good reason to do the gameplay, not because the gameplay itself is inherently complicated.

            Anonymous

In a way, that an inversion of modern Mario, with more polished gameplay but it's lost touch with fun theming. Now all the interesting designs and settings are kept separate from the player's goals.
Both are bad. You need good gameplay and good theming to make a good game.

SPM is the Brawl of Mario RPGs.
It's legitimately a good game in it's own right but hardcore fans of previous titles hate it for being too different.

Yes. The original PM is superior. This and the later games felt like autistic fan fiction OC garbage with pathetic attempts at being "edgy" and wacky. Also the gameplay felt nore like slog and ut didn't have anybof the charm or memorable locations like the original

      Anonymous

Cope. The only reason you think "edgy" is bad is because the mainstream media and assblasted journos have gaslit you into thinking that way. "Edgy" is a good thing.

        Anonymous

No. I think it's "edgy" because they added things in it that you wouldn't nornally see in a mario games. Like innocent toads getting killed. A murder scene with blood stains, a noose used for hangings etc.

  6. 11 months ago
    Anonymous

that would be the original paper mario which is much jankier

        Anonymous

64 is better on the whole but if you can tolerate the backtracking i could see TTYD winning out, it's very soulful but 64 doesn't waste your time as much

          Anonymous

That’s only a small section of the game. The sewers sections are short and have oaths that opened up the more powers and partners you recruited so it’s fun to go through them multiple times. It helps that the enemies there are easy to avoid.

          Anonymous

I definitely disagree, 64 still has a good amount of back tracking not as much as TTYD but it's there in spades. But then pretty much every else is improved in TTYD. I don't even think most players notice the back tracking to the degree that Ganker makes it out especially on a first playthough. But I think the weird hate brigade for TTYD is one of the strangest things adopted by this board.

          Anonymous

the worst parts of TTYD are the glitz pit, the chapter 4 midway point, and the entire slog before chapter 7, the worst part of mario 64 is either shy guy's toybox or flower fields

            Anonymous

The glitz pit minor leagues are boring as hell but the major leagues are kino. Really, TTYD's greatest asset is how good the combat is and giving you an excuse to do a lot of it is a good thing.

              Anonymous

the problem is you're just stuck in a locker room for almost the entire chapter beating up enemies until the game decides it's time for the story to continue. like i get it, you're just some dude who's rising through the ranks to beat the champ's ass and there's no real room for doing much else most of the time but frick man

                Anonymous

The locker is boring but the rotating cast saves it. I think the chapter has the most amount of unique npcs you could talk to. The map is small but still has exploration elements between matches so it’s enjoyable overall

I just replayed ttyd a week ago and I don't get the backtracking complaint. The only backtracking I remember was with finding general white and it's not even that bad, plus you open up pipes to all the places he was at so it's much faster.
The only other one was twilight town going back and forth through the forest. And again that's not even that bad

      Anonymous

you go through the sewers like a billion times for supplies and sidequests though, it gets pretty tedious even with first strike badges

      Anonymous

Explain to me what you do in Boggly Woods. What exactly is the intended path for that chapter?

As much as I love the game, it has a backtracking problem. The best thing they could've done was make traversing rooms you've already explored more enjoyable by giving mario better movement, and making executing puzzle elements faster so it isn't so tedious to redo puzzles you've already solved. The stupid bubble room in the great tree and the moving platforms in the rogueport underground are the worst of this.

The game would've been better if it was also a proper platformer, even if that is a big ask.

The japanese conception of a troony is very different from the western one because japan has a long history of crossdressing. Vivian is a "girl" but he isn't in denial of his own biology or in need of constant affirmation like western trannies are. In short, Vivian would like it if you called him a girl, but won't fight you over it, and won't cut off his dick. All the hot parts of a troony with less of the crazy.
