As someone who loved Persona 4, Persona 5 was genuinely a downgrade in the cast while an upgrade literally everywhere else. If you cant stomach the cast, you wont stomach the game
I enjoyed the latter part of 4 but the beginning was grating. Is the cast really that much worse?
In P4, in my opinion, the cast got better as it grew while the opposite has been true for P5. Im really not a fan of the art dude Yusuke, but I liked him in P5Scramble (Id recommend that game as well)
the dungeon shit in 5 is better than 4, but I like almost all the cast of 4, whereas I find the majority of 5 to be insufferable and easily sacrificable.

The only problem with the P4 cast was the voices. God I'm still pissed my PS2 copy is stuck with the english dub, teddy's voice drives me insane after the first dungeon. Don't know if they have original dub with any of the other releases.

It has significantly less tropes than Xenoblade if that's what you're wondering (it doesn't have bathhouse scenes or frequent moments of women getting inexplicably angry at the men (besides one throwaway joke) or blatant upskirts). It's a JRPG and while it comes with a few of those tropes, it's still a big production, high quality product. It's sitting at critical acclaim among fans and critics and there's definitely a reason for it.
Don't let any assmad trannoids that respond to this reply dissuade you. Play the game and see for yourself how good it is.
P3Reload and P4Golden are overall better. P5Royal drags on for an additional 40 hours for an jrpg that already has so much filler slop in between. The first dungeon and P5 vanillas last dungeons were the only genuinely good parts of the entire game.

When I first played it I thought it was way to VN but now years later compare to most other jrpgs it has really good and distinctive dungeons. They are just spaces too far apart
It's good but overall there are a few moments where the writing seems to go off the deep end. Particularly the pedophile double standard around Sadayo and Kamoshida either means Atlus are okay with pedophilia as long as a woman does it or more likely, they don't have a problem with pedophilia at all and just hate other forms of physical abuse

That was me with 4, but it was unbearable with 5. I played them 2 years apart so its not like it was Teen vs. Adult
how so? For me it was the opposite. I couldn't stand the characters in persona 4 but 5 really hooked me for some reason.
The character/cast interaction writing in P5 felt so juvenile. Which I know is silly to say considering none of the games really take themselves too seriously in that aspect (Teddy lol when he became human he was a bit unbearable kuma, but the P4 cast when you find them are deep in their insecurities until you connect with them & they have an intense showdown with their shadows and accept who they are, faults and all and you really feel like they grow individually and as a group as the game goes on.
I have that same feeling of emotional; character progression with P5 sometimes, but Ryuji was such a brutal punching bag (I liked him a lot), Morgana managed to be hornier than Teddy, and Yusuke is really grating.
I liked the cast 100x more in Persona5 Scramble oddly enough, probably cause of the new members to add some fresh perspectives

Adachi is probably the most overrated character that did not do much in any game ever. 2 body count. He would be a filler character in any other game with his stupid ass, nothing motives.
I like him so much cause he comes out of nowhere, and it depends on the person but I grew to really admire him 1st time around, and then on NG+ when I did his Social Link.

Part 4 cast should have just conceded they had no counterargument to Adachi that wasn't based in emotions, packed it up, and walked away.
I see this said a lot about the friendship aspect of the game but I felt nothing of it. Especially not when it comes to closet gay Kanji and tomboy Naoto. None of it felt like real proper friendships and came off as cheesey.

Gameplay is an afterthought, the combat is shallow, the gameplay outside of combat boils down to clicking X to advance dialogue or buying soda drinks from menus, its gameplay is barely 4/10
Story is a mess, the pacing is a disaster, tons of filler, from filler dialogue to filler dungeons and side quests that dont matter in the mementos, its a terrible paced game, it drags so much and takes itself too serious and at the end it falls flap because the execution is superficial and dumb.
Phantom thieves are hypocrites who brainwash people and take their free will from them, characters dont get redemption or change they get rewritten in a sudden.

Atlus has lost a lot of the big talent that was behind the 'mainstream' Persona titles. Considering how they are padding the coffers with tons of ports, remakes, and spinoffs I wouldn't be surprised if they are still struggling to get things more than just barely off the ground for P6.
P5 wasn't perfect but was far and away the most polished in the series that they've put out Trying to top it will be a pretty monumental task.
