I expect if it's "successful" it'll be due to very very steep discounts immediately after launch and flaunting how many units it pushes.

This will be another "Avengers" game situation in my eyes. People will buy it, drop it after 10 hours, and have buyer's regret because they expected something better.

What's sad is they delayed this game for ONE YEAR and it still looks awful and a lot of people can't even tell the game looks better, so what did they spend a year "polishing" and doing? Early reviews aren't very good, so one article where a critic played for 20 hours and didn't enjoy it.

                Anonymous

Actually no the complaint about elden ring from devs was about it's UX. Now you might be confused and think that's just fancy word for UI but no, I had to chat with some people to learn that UX has little to do with UI design and is more about monetized gameplay loops and dopamine dumps. It's a strictly internal word that no one outside of gamedev has ever used before those tweets.

                Anonymous

UX is the acronym for user experience and it's been definitely used in software development and marketing for many years. I'm not surprised it crossed over to game development.

                Anonymous

User experience yeah, allot of people mistake it for meaning UI but it's more stuff like "let's have daily login bonuses" or "let's have our character quip about pushing a box so the players knows they can" or "let's put yellow tape on ever interaction". You know....cancer.

                Anonymous

From a software point of view, it tries to define how a user achieves what he wants to do through the product. For example, you can have a good UI, but if you don't have the functions that the user wants or if they are poorly implemented (for example full of bugs), he will have a poor experience.

                Anonymous

Context matters though. The devs that complained about elden rings UX was about shit like "why is the golden knight attacking us, enemies should look evil in design" or "how was I supposed to know merchant kale was not hostile when he's sitting at a campfire and knights of godrick also sit at a campfire". They wanted their hands held with quips that say "oh this guy sells stuff" or (entering hostile area) messages.

                Anonymous

Well, one problem with UX is that you generally focus on the average users, not the moronic ones.

                >guns guns guns
I never get the point of forcing guns in super hero stuff. It often makes little sense especially if these types hold their own against alien forces using their 9MM's and shit. If they can do that, how in the hell would the military forces of the world even be having issues in the slightest? They have even more guns.

Forcing guns as basically a super power kills the entire genre and creates the Syndrome "when everyone is super..." problem by making an item anyone can use into effectively a super power on par with super speed, flight, invulnerability etc. Also if a special bullet can harm you, you aren't fricking invulnerable.

They've been really trying to make Harley into some kind of peak human athlete lately, like Batman or Nightwing when even in her older comic apperaence, she used misdirection and stealth rather than brute force. Unironically, they should've made a game like MGSV, where you can clown on your enemies undetected rather than an all-action game, if they wanted an actual canon Harley abilities.

Harley being a threat to even a thug with a gun will always be asinine. She is not strong, she does not have super powers, she does not have extensive combat training.

She was originally portrayed as a nigh joke sidekick whose entire thing was being in a toxic relationship. The weirdest aspect of Harley to me is how she is pushed as some yaas queen to emulate when she is literally a sociopathic serial killer. I guess a female mass shooter would also be yaas queen.

the problem is she got really popular from reasons that are problematic now. they weren't able to keep her as is because interest groups would be coming after them. but, changing her has really sort of killed her popularity, because her entire appeal was "goofy murderous bawd who's the Joker's boyfriend", and they literally took every bit of that away from her.

                >what """""Game UX""""" sins does Elden Ring even commit?
Only one. It's a game with just enough mechanical complexity that an actual manual like in the old days could have been useful. The ingame tutorials and "item descriptions" don't reveal all of the relevant details. Most of them, but not all of them. It would have been helpful for the UX if the game shipped with a real manual, even if it's just PDF in the digital versions.
Don't get me wrong, I don't want everything explained. People who complain that "Malenia cheats" are wiki-binging tryhards who want to unlock every secret so that they can minmax their gameplay and anticipate every possible enemy action instead of developing situational awareness and the ability to react to adverse circumstances.

That is apples and oranges. A phone home is NOTHING compared to server side content delivery, the game's functional content basically doesn't on your client until the server sends you all the spawn data and other shit. It's like the """cracked""" version of Diablo 3, that barely fricking works and is nothing like the actual game because it's all slipshod guessing on the fake servers part

they use Denuvo anti cheat most likely. I mean, online games all have some form of anti cheat otherwise they'd be unplayable. They just didn't bother with any in-house solution and went with Denuvo.

Yes, because they dropped the tiering system when they dropped their perpetual offering when they shifted from version 1.2.1 to 2.0. Anti-cheat is also available but this gets used by basically no one because it barely works and anyone scared about cheating is using server side progress anyway so why pay money to stop single player cheat engine shit.

Yeah, wow, devs are getting fricking scammed. When did this change occur? Persona 4 Gold has been using Denuvo since 2020 - could they have gotten grandfathered into an old system? Like, SO MANY NICHE SEGA GAMES use this shit, that I can't imagine it costing them 25,000, and them keeping it up.

                >could they have gotten grandfathered into an old system?
No one knows, there are a few companies still using Denuvo on games that are definitely profiting less than the license fee. Worth note is that the companies doing this are also the first handful of companies to ever use Denuvo. So the speculation is that they may be early investors in Denuvo who get a special sweetheart deal.

The cracking scene had a lot of drama at some point, with some mfers getting jailed, and others getting hired by Denuvo.
But even before that, Denuvo was a very tedious DRM to crack. From what I understand, hackers liked cracking games as older digital securities were more like puzzles you gotta decipher. Denuvo is basically layers of checks that are annoying to check one by one. I'm talking hundreds of thousands checks.

Yeah pretty much this. Cracking Denuvo isn't "hard", it's just mind-numbingly time consuming. We're talking like dozens and dozens of hours of disabling checks one by one. No thinking required, just sheer drudgery. It's the hacking version of a wagie job but you don't even get the benefit of clowning off with friends.
