I think this game is objectively good. I think from SNES forward there are actual good games and everything before that is really only good with rose-tinted glasses. Someone who grew up with early Atari might say it's good, but objectively there isn't a single Atari game worth playing for more than five minutes.

Overall, it has not aged well. The movement system is probably the only thing that isn't jank. It's by no means bad or unplayable, but it's at the bottom of pretty much all 3D Marios other than maybe Sunshine because that one is ultra YMMV.
I replayed it last year. Even got all the stars.
I was amazed by how well it held up. I'd actually recommend it to younger gamers for reasons other than my own nostalgia, and I certainly wouldn't say that about most of the games from my childhood. Pokémon Gen 1 really isn't worth playing unless maybe you're playing a fan game. DK64 is unforgivably tedious. Bomberman 64'd make anyone born after 1995 have an aneurysm. The Sonic Adventure games are irredeemably flawed when they're not outright laughable. And the Shenmue games are crimes against software. But Mario 64 actually managed to live up to its ambitions, and I'm only more appreciative of its achievements with time.
Admittedly, the camera fricking blows. But it's at least reasonably functional, which was really the best you could hope for before the seventh generation of consoles.

I have never played Mario 64, and I was a Playstation kid. Every time I played N64 was to play multiplayer games at friends houses, Mario 64 never ever came up

i'd 100% recommend it to anyone that enjoys platformers, so if you like them then definitely.
maybe i'm just biased since i grew up playing it in the 90s and have nostalgia for it, but there's so much the game gets right that it's hard not to sing its praises. it has a great difficulty progression, a hub world so you can tackle levels at your own pace and vary the order if you want to change it up, cool secret levels, a great sense of exploration and discovery when you try to piece together where to go to get certain stars, and super simple but smooth controls that feel great to use that allow for skill expression the better you get at using them. honestly it's one of the most fun single player games i've ever played.
but don't play a game just because you feel like you have to play it. life's too short to waste time checking games of a checklist, just play games that look fun to you. sm64 ticks all the right boxes for me, but maybe it's different for you.
This game is great because it captured the actual mario soul and turned it into the 3D realm. Most homosexuals can't grasp the miracle of a game that have to live up to the fricking Mario brand and not only accomplishes it, but it spawns a new era of 3d platformers with, arguably, the same level of impact the original 2d Mario had for the gaming industry.
For an example on the opposite direction, look at Metal Slug 3D. It fricking sucks and now Metal Slug is doomed to be 2D for all eternity. Mario did the impossible by being an actual good game.
