HL1 is good, but only in the middle section, from the introduction of the marines to Xen. There it has some if the best enemies of any shooter, comnined with good levels, and there at least is hence better than games like Doon or HL2.
From the top of my head the enemies in Half Life were

>Turrets
>Helicopters
>Dog aliens with a wind up attack

Half-Life is one of the games that if you compare it to shit back then, its a step back compared to Deus Ex and even to the level design of Doom and Quake, but if you compare it to modern shit its excellent - it oozes old school design ethos at every corner. It's a great game to play now, but yeah scripted liner corridor shit is not the best.

HL2 on the other hand is not. It's an absolutely awful game once you've played literally any other shooter made in the last 15 years and the novelty of not-cutscenes and vehicle sections has worn off.

Valve screwed over the Artifact fanbase by cancelling the Artifact 2.0 beta without even allowing users to invite friends like they said they would in January 2021 and does not deserve your financial support for these gross consumer-unfriendly practices.

I JUST beat HL1 for the first time and while the shooting was fun, its easy to see why they got rid of the platforming in 2. Who thought it was a good idea to put in so much fricking platforming? Source was good for the the guns and the shooting. From Xen to Nihilanth, the game was the shittiest FPS I had played.

Doom has basically only one level that actually makes good use of its enemies the whole time outside of nightmare, and that's E4M1, so not even anything in the original game
I will eat Doom's butthole like groceries for the sheer amount of content support for it, total-conversion mods like Reelism are my jam

I honestly can't stand these shooters.
This was big shit at the time. A cinematic-y cutscene wasn't attempted in an ostensibly FPS game before and Half-Life is legendary for getting it *right* the first time. You're still able to move around, you're still able to look around, even if actual interactivity is low it gives the illusion that you're still doing something. Hell, you can kill whatever npc is talking to you and face no real repercussions, which is a step up from the more storydriven HL2.
This was 1998, not your candy ass trying to hold it up under an additional 30 years of scrutiny, development, and industry growth.
Doom and Quake are the actual tech demos, not HL1 and HL2. The games themselves are lackluster and completely mogged by their mods.

You need to do a set amount of damage to Gonarch/Nihilant that probably exceed the glock ammo available. It's doable with crowbar+glock.
