It's not a dumb statement, because it goes counter to the original philosophy of the franchise.
Pokemon were designed with the line of logic "how does this thing exist/live"
Now, there are surely cases where idiots will make a claim like that and be moronic about it.

Most normal Pokemon though are supposed to live in the wild, and that's when you start to need to look at these things.
