I'd argue the Quest 3 hits that mark with $500 as the upper limit of what would be acceptable.
The reports of higher retention rates for Q3 compared to Q2 seem to indicate that.

        >$600+$3000PC + tip
and now what? there is no content for VR except professional porn which is already dead and Half Life Alyx which is the only real AAA gaming title. Developers gave up on VR because they know nobody is gonna spend $600 on a headset and $3000 on a pc that can run it. They are gonna wait until a $50 headset exists and $300 pc to run it before dumping funds into VR content development.
TLDR: nobody is gonna create VR content until it's affordable to pajeets.

The primary Quest demographic is screeching kids. The issue is not price. The Quest 2 is less than half the price of the PS5. The hardware and software both aren't good enough. All the problems I've complained about were already solved but doesn't fit the Fortune 500 "vision" of bleeding money.
We have a few good VR games, it can be done.
We have comfortable headsets, it can be done.
Studios have formed and kept themselves alive through VR, it can be done.
But these execs hate all of this because they're too moronic to capitalize on any of it. They buy 50 studios and can't land a single hit, so their view is to burn it all for AR, which is the REAL future that will buy their billionth yacht for real this time :O

And honestly, any VR developer supporting the race to the bottom platforms kinda deserves the landscape they're in, everyone saw this coming.

We won't be even putting on "vr" glasses after 30 years.
It will all be microchips inplanted to our brains. Why even need a physical screen or device infront of your face when you can just implant it to user's brain and have ease of access, enhanced brain activity and any virtual space or environment you want?
The chips are unironically the future and it scares me.

People spent a whole decade shitting on stupid motion control bullshit from Gen 7 consoles. Then companies figure the only reason motion control shit failed is because people didn't also have to wear an expensive pair of oversized goggles. Nothing is ever going to beat sitting down with your controller/kbm in hand to enjoy your games, even when titans like Valve are trying to make VR a thing by making actual good games for it. There's a reason we've been playing games the same way for 40 years and the only popular innovation has been wireless versions of the same controllers.

motion controls are separate to vr.

        VR exists without motion controls

Literally what is the point of VR if you aren't at least using headtracking.

            >VR mods don't have head tracking

Posts I was quoting was on how VR and motion control are not necessarily connected, yet you say pretty much every VR application is using headtracking, which is a motion control. Again my point is, most people playing video games are doing it to be lazy, they don't want to have to move other parts of their body to play a game, even if its just their neck. No matter how immersive or enjoyable it can be, it ultimately makes gaming less convenient, which is one of the biggest selling points for anything in the gaming market.

No. You're being overly autistic. Headtracking has always existed in VR otherwise it's just a 3d viewer.
VR headsets have been sold without motion controllers. Oculus DK1 DK2, the original CV1 came with xbox controller. PSVR1 etc

                >Headtracking has always existed in VR

That's the worst game you could make in VR. Riven and the other Myst sequels are gigantic worlds yet meant to be traversed in seconds by clicking from 2D scene to 2D scene. Traversing the world in 3D/VR is going to turn the game into a huge chore. Like Uru.

        Anonymous

I disagree. Riven's on 5 tiny islands and I don't see any reason to have to zip around at light speed in a slow paced adventure game. If anything, the absolute worst parts of Riven were related to its point-and-click nature because there were a bunch of transitions that were totally unintuitive and annoying doors hidden by the forced perspective. What I want out of Riven is to be able to look at the world they created in as much detail as possible.
Also it's funny that you say it was meant to be traversed in seconds when the game used to require swapping CDs every time you got on a rail.

What did I want to do? Use a regular controller in VR to send inputs to a SteamVR controller. Yeah, that's not allowed, says Gaben. Heaven forbid some zoomer use a program to add a virtual bump stock to his VR controller with a macro, right?

Highly recommend Virtual Desktop if you're on a Quest 3 and you've got a good gpu.
The streaming resolution is 2x as much as steam link it's ridiculous (1500px vs 3000px). Even the occulus link software is higher res like 2200px.
I dunno wtf they're doing at valve with steam link but if it wasn't a "it just work" solution people wouldn't use it at all. That or not knowing any better.

doubt it would be capable of running it at max
here's what the program settings are:
        Potato: 1440x1536
        Low: 1728x1824
        Medium: 2016x2112
        High: 2496x2592
        Ultra: 2688x2784
        Godlike: 3072x3216 (Quest Pro/Quest 3)

If you have the Oculus software installed, you go into C:Program FilesOculusSupportoculus-diagnostics and run OculusDebugTool.exe
In the Occulus Link sub-section you change the encode resolution width. Put a very high number it doesn't matter it'll get clamped down to anyway by the software.
In the actual occulus software you set your target FPS (72, 80, 90, 120) and resolution you set it so the vertical resolution is like 2200.
Once you boot steam VR, always set the steamvr resolution of your games at 100%, higher than this and you're basically applying antialiasing by upsampling.
If you can get maintain good fps at that resolution with your card then consider getting virtual desktop and using the High/Ultra/Godlike settings because it's the only way to get higher resolution images coming to the headset.

Oh yeah I forgot to mention I'm using a cable so that's why I put the bitrate at 500.
If you're playing wireless there's no way you can sustain such a high bitrate without a 6E router so change the codec to H265 and drop the bitrate to 200 or 150 if it's too choppy.
Also here's some conservative settings in the Occulus app for graphics

          Anonymous

unrelated but how does this resolution setting work?
You'd think that putting it above 1.0 would start supersampling but on my client 4224x 2272 isn't even 1.0 resolution

Well if you're on loonix it's your moral duty to use ALVR instead, and you can set up any kind of resolution on that thing but it'll take you a month to fine tune the encode settings so it runs well

          Anonymous

I tried using ALVR back around v18 or v19 and it just didn't work well enough even after a couple of weeks of tweaking. I was quite sad.

I'm picking up a 4090 soon and a quest 3, Do I need to get a 6E router If I want to use VD to play PC-VR wirelessly?

        Anonymous

you don't NEED to but it depends on a bunch of factors
VD comes with a bunch of encoder settings, h264, h265 and av1.
newer encoder are more performant at the same bitrate but take longer to encode and decode
h264 at 500mbps is better than AV1 at 200mbps but the difference is I can't sustain 500mbps wireless with my wifi6 router while 200mbps is just fine
Wifi 6 is 70$ for a unit while 6E is 170$ for the cheapest one (tp-link) and up to 250 for great ones.

          Anonymous

          Thanks for explaining.
I was planning on picking up the D-link Air bridge since meta sells it but after looking into it more I'm reading it kind of sucks for VD and to use a 6E router instead. Personally I'm fine with paying an extra ~150 if it means my experience will be better

VR is way too much of a hassle if you want anything even vaguely realistic. I've got a tracked PPgun I picked up cheap, half the buttons don't work because "lol steamVR input", but it has recoil which is alright.

You still run into basic issues like reloading and shit getting in the way. Plus, unless you own a warehouse, you're not going to be able to run around for the full larp. Maybe one day we'll have VR tracked gloves with plastic peripherals, but even then you run into problems with feedback.

Thanks I completely forgot the RE games had VR. Also that list says Meta Quest, aren't those tied to a Meta/FB/Instagram account? I have an Index and thought Meta stuff had to be linked to social media and software was installed to the headset itself. I didn't do much research into it while deciding between the Vive and Index based on that assumption

Adventure games are amazing in VR. That's probably the closest you get to VR horror games without shooting. Things like Red Matter, 7th Guest, and maybe Outer Wilds even though it's not explicitly horror. For more traditional horror stuff, Resident Evil games on RE engine (so 7 and 8) have good VR mods. For an experience you can actually put some hours in, Phasmophobia actually started out as a VR game and probably still works best in VR.

    I'm sad it is
I wanted to get one but it never really crossed over into being worth the hassle when most games were gimmicks and there weren't enough full-features titles or upcoming actual games instead of gimmicks and cash-ins for me to think I'd still be using the thing a year later

There's a ton of great games and mods with full motion controls
I've had VR for 2 years and I'm still discovering crazy experiences I've never felt in normal gaming.

970 was capable of early consumer VR headsets like the CV1 and even the Rift S. I played Skyrim VR and Alyx on a 970 albeit lowest settings for Alyx, still looked decent. I just about got by in Pavlov too but I doubt it would be playable anymore in the current version.
The much higher resolutions of headsets like the Quest 3 combined with it's encoding cost has driven up PCVR hardware requirements. Except for the ability to play without a wire it still plays the same as on a CV1 with touch controllers.

The crispness of a high resolution headset is great. It feels like you're really there and not looking at some blurry, jagged edged 3d model. If you pair it up with a game that has 4k/8k textures then you're basically in another world.

The thing that really killed PCVR was devs seeing how much higher sales were on Quest 2. Suddenly every PCVR dev slowed or stopped development to focus on getting a Quest port out and new games were being designed entirely around Quest 2 hardware limits.

Currently almost every new headset uses a slightly different tracking solution, which means you can't use controllers from other headsets.

    how badly this induces myopia?

      Anonymous

Current headsets have a fixed focal point between 1 and 2 meters. They're less likely to induce myopia than starting at a monitor (typically much closer than 1-2 meters) for long periods of time.
Eye strain is a bigger issue for VR:
      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vergence-accommodation_conflict

The most underrated risk of VR is postural. Additional weight on the head makes developing forward head posture and rounded shoulders even more likely. If you play VR and spend a ton of time sat at a desk you're at the highest risk as both can lead to poor posture.

The original game was great, but unfortunately the devs are being israeli and releasing a remake just two years later, with no word of a discount (it should be free) for existing owners. Even if it looks like a good overhaul, that's insane. They also announced a sequel so I'm guessing they're trying to make money towards that

Probably significantly longer. The Quest 2 wasn't discontinued after the Quest 3 launched like the Quest 1 was when Q2 launched.
It's not like any quest games released in the last two years even supported Q1 anyway.

Actually the writing on the wall it is and why they're dropping the price (Wal-Mart was 150$) the replacement will be the quest 3 lite. Quest 2 optics with quest 3 processor

          Anonymous

Pretty sure the Quest 3 Lite is specifically for the Chinese market.
Regardless I still see the Quest 2 receiving much longer software support than the Quest 1. Like I said before new games stopped being made for Quest 1 a while before now simply because its hardware was so limited in comparison to Quest 2, and Q2 compared to Q3 doesn't have that bad of an issue.

We don't want them. We don't want normal gays aaa'in our vr. In fact that's why it's good. Vr is basically gaming in the 2000s although that probably mostly cause the mods are old games in a gen where all new games suck and new devs literally hate gamers. If you want to keep gaming and not give nu devs money, vr is the best way to do so. And it makes nu "devs" seethe.

This, but it reminds me more of the 90’s. Gaming on PC back then was uncommon and you had to get familiar with a piece of tech barely anyone had. I was the only one in my group of friends who even had a family computer and of course no one I know now has a VR headset. There was a shitload of DOS slop in the shareware era too, like VR slop now except you have to pay for most of it. VR hasn’t even had its Doom equivalent yet. I’m willing to put up with fewer quality releases if it means a smaller community. I don’t mind, I’ll do something else if there’s nothing to play. We already know what happens when anything gets flooded with plebs.

No reason to wait unless you're in the bracket for a 2000$ hmd. The next roll outs will be avp clones with matching res, oled varient around a 2k price point. But everything good for the next at least 2 years will be mods, especially since mainstream has chosen the woke hill to die on

Maybe I’m weird but my favorite aspect of VR games is the return of the Wii’s pointer gameplay and the potential of 2 pointers. I wish devs would play around more with diorama style 3rd person rail shooters. Imagine a Sin and Punishment game in 3D where you’re not only managing your movement but two different streams of bullets and enemy patterns that require you to split your focus 3 ways.

it'll never take off because the games that truly take advantage of the tech can't simply be ported to/from major platforms, so you'll never see anywhere near enough devs invest the required effort to make the sort of games that are system sellers.

It won't "take off" but it's slowly growing and will continue to grow. There's a reason that companies like Facebook, Sony, and Apple are all still investing billions into R&D. They want a slice of the market before it gets big.
