The difference is that Pokemon is too big to fail at this point. It doesn't matter if most of the new designs are unappealing because kids and 30-year old autists will keep buying the games, and there will always be people buying the cards and merchandise.

Dark Souls 3, especially after coming froom the world of Dark Souls 2, 3 felt so barren and uninspiring, it hurts.
Ruby was the last one I can say I really enjoyed. X/Y wasn't terrible but I didn't find myself particularly caring for any of the pokemon, was glad to finally have the fire start not be fire/fighting again for the sixth game in a row. Sun/Moon bores me, haven't finished it because I just don't like any of the pokemon. The fire starter is clearly a fire/fighting but they swapped the Type to Dark like no one would notice all the wrestling moves.

Even if the formula shake-ups with gen 6 and 7 onward weren't anyone's idea of a real evolution for the main series, everyone was desperate for something truly new back then since gens 2 to 5 were arguably just extensive content and graphical expansions to red and blue, the core gameplay barely changed. People used to be pretty upset about that shit
the core gameplay is the exact same now as its ever been just with yet another shitty underwhelming gimmick and muh empty open world.
Gen 5 designs look frick ugly. Every Gen after Gen 5 has also been 90% uggos. Everyone who with taste stopped playing after that, which is why gen5 now gets praised by the current drone-like bottom feeder pokemon fanbase.
