Pokemon games are pretty nice rpgs. I recommend engaging in side content whenever it appears. Catch new pokemon whenever they appear too if you want.

Play Following Platinum and use HxD so it runs at 60 fps. Literally the best way to play Slognoh.

Yes. Pokemon "fans" who don't like this game will never understand what made Pokemon good. It wasn't made to attract noobs and normies with spectacle. It was made to please autistic Pokemon fans. Its difficulty, while not extreme, is challenging. It has large caves with maze-like layouts. The physical/special split makes it even more interesting than the GBA games and all the new moves and items just add to the strategic depth. The inclusion of so many new evolutions of older pokemon is cool. The final boss is probably the toughest and coolest one in the series. There's a ton of content including a huge postgame. I don't see how this isn't Pokemon in its peak form.
And before you ask, I'm a millennial who started with gen 1.

Just out of curiosity, what does XY do better than USUM and SwSh? You did say it's the peak of pokemon too.
Literally none of that matters in the current day, XY is outdated and replaced for competitive play and the games that replaced it have all the QoL changes it made and more. All that's left to judge them for is the single player and it's not very appealing.

The majority of Platinum's content is still accessible to this day and judging by the current prices of the DS games compared to the 3DS ones it seems that more people want what Platinum has today then XY

It's accessible in that it exists, competitive play has entirely moved on to Gen 8 and so has most of the player base which is what any multiplayer game relies on. Platinum's shut down content is available by other means too such as fan servers for GTS/battling and DNS servers for Events

Honestly, if you want the best "I want to get into Pokemon" game, Black/White is probably the best option since it's all of the QoL aspects that help players come back and probably has the best level curve of any of the games.
Its slow as frick, but could be comfy if that's your speed.

The worst Pokemon game is still pretty fun, and Platinum is actually one of the better ones.
But I'd still recommend HGSS or BW instead. The Sinnoh games are pretty tedious.
