I think ~1998-2002 were the golden age of video games.
At the time industry was in the state of perfect balance between high quality and a reasonable development time all while not being too afraid afraid to experiment which resulted in unprecented amount of great games/year. It's not even nostalgia speaking, I didn't play most of these games until much later.
This era will never come back, even if developers are just as talented, even if mtx etc were to disappear, modern games take fricking forever to develop so this density of great releases will never happen again.

Zero artistic merit and they don't deserve praise for it. Film remakes are always panned for being pointless wastes of time and money. Even good remakes like The Thing were critically destroyed and only gained a cult following later but The Thing is barely a remake and Carpenter did a lot to make it his own which is why its praised. The Dead Space remake is the equivalent of the shitty shot for shot Psycho remake.

I'd take MGS1 over most modern garbage.
And before the obvious counter argument arrives, it has nothing to do with nostalgia. Some of my favorite games are ones released on the 90s that I only played just recently.
They might be good, but they're worse than what's out there now from a gameplay perspective. That's what I value: gameplay.
I wouldn't take MGS1 over anything that plays better, which includes all contemporary MGS, simply because the gameplay is worse. MG1 and 2 are horrible. It might be more innovative, it might be more genre-defining, but it plays worse.
I honestly don't even feel the need to bring nostalgia into it. The old games play worse. Full stop.
