JRPGs

Anyone else really love the JRPG aesthetic? I don't really know how to describe it other than 'you know it when you see it', but it's really appealing to me for some reason.

trust these devs, they are the only ones that can make a half decent memegrid game if you look at their other games
except for hyperdevotion, i don't know what's with neptunia that makes any game made with nep stuff completely moronic, dumbed down, and braindead

          >i don't know what's with neptunia that makes any game made with nep stuff completely moronic, dumbed down, and braindead
Appeal to the lowest common denominator. Making a Nep game almost complex is a big no-no.

    >Party members are 99% of the time attractive
    >The world feels warm and inviting thanks to the colouring and design
    >A lot of banter with everyone which gives you a sense of companionship
    >A clear goal to work towards with a certain promise of romance/good ending that will benefit the MC (you), your friends and your maybe romance partner
    >You can see yourself get stronger (numbers)
    >Adventure with people you care about (most of the time)
    >Youth you missed or never had sprinkled with fantasy ideals
    >JRPG

There. Nothing wrong with it. And sure, sometimes edge and depressing stuff are added, but they are just spices to add flavour to your journey. Is not weird that people fall in love with it.

      Yes! Thank you, that's it.

100%! My issues with JRPGs are that the gameplay usually sucks or is very bland. That's one of the reasons I loved Code Vein, anime aesthetic with a JRPG tier story and character designs

I have warmed up to turn based combat in recent years, but I do like that more and more of these types of games are shifting towards real time.

It's not that I dislike turn based, it's that it's always way too simple or brain dead easy. I actually heavily prefer turn based to shoddy low effort action games, soulslike or bust

It boils down to being earnest and unironic, as opposed to the irony poisoned westoid writing.

The lack of irony is really nice. It's sad how so many works still feel the need to apologize for themselves.

JRPGs don’t have a concrete aesthetic. Compare Xenoblade to Shadow Hearts and tell me with a straight face that they have the same aesthetic.

I think the “vibe” that separates JRPGs from other types of games is that most of them are extremely melodramatic and they unapologetically embrace that melodrama.

Good melodrama is rare in this day and age where everything has to be subversive or ironic.

        >vibe
Yeah, I guess vibe would be a better word for it.

A lot of them try to steer you into being a good person doing good deeds for people that are good. You don't see that often in western stuff. It gets real tiring having to help shitty npcs and steering you into a world of paranoia, manipulation with bad intents.

          >Try make a gacha because everyone makes a gacha right? It's easy money right?.
          >The entire shitshow that was the development of it ended up making a lot of their talent just get up and leave, not even because gacha bad but because the development was hell.
          >It barely manages to release, only for the servers to overload and the gacha end up a fricking year-long disaster that actually unironically actually almost killed them.
          >Now left in the mud, they try one last thing to make money, something easy and guaranteed to make money.
          >Of course, grab a beloved franchise with an extremely iconic art style that is easy to make games for because of asset reuse nobody minds
          >...And throw all that into the trash for a generic 3d chibi looking artstyle that is a massive pain in the ass to dev for only because "3D > 2D, right? kids these days like 3D right?".
          >...And make the story unlike all the others, instead pandering to modern ironic weebs with a half-assed parody that doesn't even understand what it's parodying.
          >...And to make it even worse they ended up ruining the entire balance of the game which ended up angering most long term fans who would have otherwise forgiven literally anything else as long as they got a new game to grind.
          >End up panicking because they don't know why their masterpiece failed, make an extremely low effort hoe-girlve collab to try pander to people, it barely does anything.
          >Now they are left up with an overinvested shitshow that nobody liked, barely any money to do shit, and no idea where to go now.

Speaking of, we really need more sci-fi JRPGs. Yeah, there's a new Star Ocean coming out, but I mean in general.

          Anonymous

Sci-fi is boring as shit and gives you nothing to work with unless you turn it into basically magic but with a tech aesthetic.
Which is exactly what PS and SO did.

          >new Star Ocean

          Anonymous

It's a real shame there are so few that wear their sci-fi settings on their sleeves instead of making you slog through hours of swords and sorcery stuff to get to the "epic twist" of the final dungeon being a crashed space ship or some shit. In terms of contemporary stuff, we do also have Xenoblade but that's not really traditional SF. I still can't believe what's become of Phantasy Star, which should have been a staple RPG series along with DQ and FF considering it mogged them both right out the gate.

      >MANLY shit
This is either bait or an incredibly newbie thing to say while accusing someone else of being a newbie. That's how some of the most mainstream anime looked back then. There's nothing wrong with preferring that aesthetic. The actual content tends to be pretty much similar to what we have now, albeit simpler due to hardware limitations. Old JRPGs have a lot to offer and if you'd been old enough to play any back in the day you'd understand why others are nostalgic for them.
