JRPGs don't need to be like western games. JRPGs do need to find their own, actual fun identity. Right now they are still stuck in the same story beats, same padded out games, same pointless character progression, and the same checkbox side quests. JRPGs have completely and utterly failed to innovate in any way over the past 20 years, except for replacing the slightly strategic (read: APPLY DEBUFS) turn based combat with button mashy action combat.
The fact that EOgays think using CC and debuff as deep gameplay really paints the absolute state of JRPGs. Can't blame the, there are too many JRPGs where the gameplay ends up being mono button affair of spamming auto-attacks/run away from trash mobs and super-effective attacks on bosses.

It innovated by combining the energy system with a perfected, expanded job system. Combined with difficult bosses, it makes you actually think about your moves and forces you into novel tactics, something that JRPGs often struggle with.

I just want tactical games, like FFT and Tactics Ogre, instead of homies in a row. To even FFT's point though, move and do one attack end turn is boring as hell. The battle environments are also really stale, so I hope the remake really upgrades that aspect. Instead of just fighting on rooftops, I want to be able to enter buildings.
