Why is Ultimate so boring to play and watch? The game is dry as frick. Smash 64 and Melee were so much more entertaining both to play and to watch the top players doing their thing.

Because the core mechanics are aggressively mediocre by the standards of other platform fighters. The game's only saving grace competitively is the large, pretty decently balanced roster.

I can't even pretend to give a frick about the Smash scene since discovering Age of Empires 2's competitive scene. It's so much better. It's like night and day, the highest tier players are all sportsmen and super showy in their gameplay for the audience. The community is full grass roots and filled to the brim with people who have adored the game for upwards of 20 years and want the best for it. The game has so much more depth, so instead of banning stages because they outright break the "competitive" aspects of the game, variance in map design in AOE2 only adapts the solid foundation into something new and equally as competitively valid as the "final destination" of the series, Arabia. Also the competitive scene is THRIVING, unlike Smash where the Zero's, Hbox's, and such of the scene never actually end up "dethroned" in the proper sense, and just end up unchallenged, getting bored, and getting worse as they atrophy, the AOE2 scene has had the top players all catch up to the #1 player in the world in ability, but TheViper is still capable of taking major tournaments, proving he still plays at his previous skill level. Tournament sets are filled with 1 to 1 back and forths all the way to game 7, kino reverse sweeps, off meta creativity. Everything you could really ever want a healthy and thriving competitive scene to have.
Also the average viewer and player are much closer to 30, in contrast to Smash, where the average is probably closer to 16.

I would probably have dropped the game entirely by now if I didn't love maining Banjo and Kazooie so much, Smash is such a fricking garbage competitive scene. It's always just which mexican can find and shamelessly exploit the safest strategies possible going around winning every major tournament.
This is really interesting sounding and not something I expected to see in this thread.
I've never touched AOE2 or even really any RTS before but I've heard great things. Is it newbie friendly? Moreso if I play the campaigns and scenarios would that be fun as a bit more of a casual player?
I'm a bit of an impatient gamer which is the main thing that kept me away from RTS, but it does look intriguing and all the different civs to play with look neat.
Yes, there is a huuuuge population of objectively bad and mediocre players. The skill curve is populated all the way from the bottom to the top, its not a CS1.6 or brood war where everyone left is a god

Also yeah in 2 Definitive Edition its a collection of a prior released content, so youre talking like 20+ campaigns of 6 missions each, and with the 2 DLCs for 2DE its 6 more campaigns of 6 each, its a TON of campaign to work through and players make custom ones a lot too.
I will say though, in the normal format, even the most aggressive rushes cant usually definitively close out a game before the 25 minute mark, and even if you solely focus on rush strats, a defensive player might drag the game to late imperial age, meaning over an hour of gameplay easily.
Empire Wars starts in feudal age with a full economy set up, though its a significantly less popular mode, you can have games close out via early aggression in under 10 minutes. Death match similarly starts in post imperial but it plays out SO different from a normal game that its basically an entirely different game.
