I'll never understand why the colors got desaturated in 3D. Creatures Inc. made all the sprites, too, didn't they? So it's not like there was a miscommunication.
I’m gonna be fair and assume you’re not trolling - who’s to say what Pokémon “really” look like? Who says the desaturated versions are more legit than the saturated ones? They’re both from official products.
Not to mention, Pokemon change their appearance. Fat Pikachu being the obvious example.

glad we agree complaining about how saturated the pokemon are is stupid since you don't really know what they're supposed to look like.

It’s perfectly fine to complain about that, it’s just dumb to use “real looks” as an argument. I think the saturated versions should be the default because they look better.

ok then it's perfectly fine to complain about the saturated pokemon looking shittier compared to the models.

It's what they wanted. The desaturation is according to Sugimori's vision, and barring a few cases, I think it looks a lot better than the gaudy colors that they needed for the GBA.
Displays on both the GBA and DS were wildly washed out before they used the panels in the 3DS models. This was only partially addressed in the GBA SP 101 model and DS Lite through XL. The 3DS family all had a much wider color gamut.
They hyper saturated a lot of sprites for those older sprite games. That's why when directly ripped from the game files or emulated they seem so vibrant, but played on original hardware they WILL look much closer to the 3D model colors.
That all said, the desaturation GameFreak did to a number of 3D models was far too much. You can even see in several mega evolutions the new color schemes that are a lot more saturated than their base forms like Sceptile.
It's a compounded issue.
True, I always forgot that older sprites are made with very different displays in mind.
I'll have to charge up my old SP some time and really see how the sprites look on that.
They are just an example meant to illustrate how high fidelity sprites would be downgraded.
>It’s perfectly fine to complain about that,

The screen has nothing to do with what I am asking, I am asking where did those sprites come from since I have never seen them before.

Oh, so they're fan art. The values and shapes of the some shadows do look wonky so I guess it makes sense. I was wondering if they were shit datamine from a leak or whatever.
>The screen has nothing to do with what I am asking, I am asking where did those sprites come from since I have never seen them before.
An artist made them, explicitly saying they are not meant for the shitty DS screen but for people playing on a computer.

Yeah, you're right, high res back sprites couldn't possibly work on the D-
oh.
I think they shit the bed, but with the animations. The tweening thing works okay for the gen 5 pokemon, but probably because they were made for that game. The gen 4 and older animations suck because they just reused older sprites even when the pose wasn't conducive to a decent animation.
>Can someone explain this antialiasing
1. game freak is moronic and lazy because they're a small indie company
2. instead of drawing bigger back sprites to fit the view of the pokemon being closer to the player they simply scaled the sprite up 2x
3. the back sprite is now moronicly half the resolution it could be instead of the DS's native resolution
Those backsprites would clash horribly with the style of the non-back sprites

Imagine is right, if it was gen 1-2 instead of 1-3. The Hoenn games at least are a visual clusterfrick outside of (most) Pokemon sprites.
Yes exactly. At least the game boy has the excuse of being a glorified calculator. DS has no excuse
Top right is correct.
Gen IV killed Pokemon and is only liked by zoomers.

What is there to explain? They’re the result of (relatively) low resolution sprites. How much of that is due to hardware limitations or due to incompetence is up for debate.

Illustrations look more desaturated because of the watercolor legacy, I don’t think it’s fair to assume they’re totally accurate color representation.

i've always hated that machoke sprite, it looks like he's sniffing his armpit

Static sprites are shit
Wrong
What the frick is this "how it looks on your computer" shit?
>zoomer never had a DS
DS/3DS use actually pretty nice base models, but hardware limitations and handheld resolution made them scale them down and look pixelated.
Proof? I have absolutely never seen those thin-line sprites in my entire life.
They are just an example meant to illustrate how high fidelity sprites would be downgraded.
Yeah, but it would make you a tasteless idiot.

It doesn't mean anything, it's just an assblasted DSgay who's mad that Game Freak shat the bed with gen 5's graphics.

nobody actually thinks this
People with standards do.
1. No they didn't.
2. Even if they did the artist would be wrong.
I think they shit the bed, but with the animations. The tweening thing works okay for the gen 5 pokemon, but probably because they were made for that game. The gen 4 and older animations suck because they just reused older sprites even when the pose wasn't conducive to a decent animation.

Are there romhacks which fix it?
If so, how does the fix work???

OP btfo
it doesn't look like that in my computer, what settings do you use?
>venasaur is trans
Dropped
Are these leftmost sprites hand drawn? Who made them?
Gamefreak dint make the models Creatures inc and they are no longer business partners.
Even the sprites weren't always great. Seriously, how the frick did they peak at gen 2.
GF should do what atlus did and just compress the official art and make sprites from that.
I recall reading that, for the SNES titles, they did the spritework first and THEN made the art based off it.
im fine with going back to pure 2d pixel art instead of mixed even if i prefer it
theres still a lot you can do to make it aesthetically pleasing
would be pretty sick
Top right is correct.
Gen IV killed Pokemon and is only liked by zoomers.
The deepest red pill to swallow
This is truth, but it's also a ship that sailed 15+ years ago. There is no going back.
