    >What was the worst /tg/ related kickstarter that you've ever backed?

None because I dont back at kickstarter or crowdfunding projects.

I dont do that, because its based at a flawed premise.

The premise is that free money is enough to make a idea change its variable It-Exist? from false to true.

This premise is flawed and so crowdfunded is a flawed thing.

PS: There is just one type of exception. Like as some example a band have the money and would be able to produce 200 vinyls but it doenst know if people would want it. So it create a crowdfunding where after 200 people back it, they will produce the thing. This is an exception because here they are 100% able to do the thing with the exact amount money they are asking for and the amount of money they are asking for, and would be able to do it without people help (assuming they were ok with losing that money if they dont sell the thing)

      >The premise is that free money is enough to make a idea change its variable It-Exist? from false to true.
      >This premise is flawed and so crowdfunded is a flawed thing.
It's not necessarily about "It-Exist", but "It-Good". For example, being able to commission art for a book that you have written. You could use shitty stock art or publish a no-art version, sure, or you could get a good layout guy and artist hired with that money and make something that shines.

This is dumb, Kickstarters exist to generate capital that then is able to pad out margins on what would otherwise be terminally niche products.

      Anonymous

That describes literally hundreds of projects on the platform right now. Book projects in particular as a rule are ready to go and use Kickstarter to figure out how many copies to print in a way that gets them paid in advance so they can't miscalculate their publishing costs.

      Anonymous

Yeah, it does seem back asswards to me just fronting someone a sero interest loan with no obligation of ever delivering anything in return.

Kickstarter just giving the money over without any chacks and balances seems like the issue to me.

The hard part of any project is *finishing* it. Any idiot can *start* a project, the hard work comes at the end when you're sick of it, noone cares any more and you just need to grind through and get it done. That's why the reddit-style lolrandom "Muh think of project, Muh start project, muh think of new project, muh start project" annoys me. Yeah, that's not whimsical and it's not funny, it's a thing that can genuinely frick your life up.

They should have something in place to incentivise delivering, even if it's just a portion of the money being held back or something.

You are getting at an underlying issue with KS which is that its kind of obscure what exactly you are funding. Are funding basic R&D? Or is the product practically ready to go and they just need an art budget? Some freinds and I are about to launch a KS of our own for miniatures. We made sure going in that 80% of models are production ready. Other than paying for the 5th of 5 armies we are mostly usinh KS as a tool to get sales and some legitimacy as a company. So in our case we have a product that is already good to go, we just need people to buy it.

They're cool to look at but the thought of painting those makes me ill. Also the fact it's trying to launch a whole thing based on
          >It's 40K BUT
would be bad enough for a kickstarter (I don't mind 3P models FWIW, I love stuff like Hydracast and wanna get into designing printable bitz and models), but
          >It's Space Marines BUT FEMALE
is just cringeworthy. We see EXACTLY what you're doing and it's not funny, clever or worthwhile. Frick off. It's gonna be another brief 15-minutes-of-fame case amongst certain hobbytubers and it'll be forgotten like all the rest. There's nothing unique or interesting about it like Turnip28 (which I might add doesn't even have official minis beyond downloadable .stl files for converting), it's LITERALLY just overdesigned models aimed at the "What if Marines BUT GIRL?" types.
          Garbage.

tl;dr im gonna be pretty happy with my female space marines and im not scared of painting them and i like having niche stuff

              Anonymous

Hot take: I'd rather we got more aesthetic/subculture flexibility for Sisters of Battle than just made girl marines. For example, a Convent that was established to bring the word of the Emperor to a tropical world inspired by South East Asia, which adapted elements of the creed to entice the locals into following their edicts (much like the Spanish did in the Philippines) and in the process adopted elements of the local cultures themselves. Even at the painting level you could give the cloth parts patterns inspired by, say, native Tagalog textiles. That? That'd be interesting. Space Marines BUT GIRLS is, even aside from pandering to people who don't belong in our hobby, just fricking boring.

i dont think thats really a hot take anon but likedo you do anything to achieve that or do u just talk about it online

ok i lied i read your post just now
            >It's Space Marines BUT FEMALE
i dont think any of the marketing is portraying them like that? i just say that because its why im buying them, and even the pack im buying is mostly not explicitly female sculpted marines so idk what youre on, its not weird to have 30% of a miniature army be female
            >it's not funny, clever or worthwhile.
thats, just, like your opinion bro. i think theyre funny and fun
            > It's gonna be another brief 15-minutes-of-fame case amongst certain hobbytubers and it'll be forgotten like all the rest.
what? theyre models dude im buying them to paint and play them im not buying them because i think theyre going to be famous lol
            >There's nothing unique or interesting about it
theres nothing "unique" or "interesting" about lots of model lines they just look cool and thats enough
            > it's LITERALLY just overdesigned models aimed at the "What if Marines BUT GIRL?" types.
again im pretty sure its just aimed at people who want overdesigned chaos marines (thats me!) the female thing is just a bonus

overall i dont see why youre so angry, lots of people like them and the company making them is getting money from that so whats the real problem, is nobody allowed to make things that offend u or smthn? because everyone else is happy (me, thats me im happy)

I've had like three or four fail with no refunds. So any of those.
One was for Mandate, a space ship/fleet videogame.

Then another one for paper terrain.

This was the most disappointing. I'm a fan of the novels and I wanted this game to be good. I've never used the Hero System but it seems needlessly complex. This is a fun setting with lots of monsters and gunplay and action. Simple would have been best. A lot of the artwork is also laughably bad, though I must say that some of it is actually quite good.

I doubt many people back enough crowdfunding projects to make "best" and "worst" a meaningful comparison.

I only backed two, and they were both from established companies so it was basically just a preorder. It was the original Reaper Bones kickstarter and an Indiegogo by Avatars of War miniatures. I got what I paid for in both instances, though the Reaper miniatures definitely were the better deal. (The later Bones kickstarters weren't nearly as good as the first, so I didn't back them.)

Thr Darkest Dungeon kickstarter by mythic games just sent an update saying that if you want the game you backed you have to pay them more to cover shipping, or else they'll leave the box in China until they can sell it on their website. This is after raising the shipping prices once already.

      Anonymous

      >or else they'll leave the box in China until they can sell it on their website
That's not true you lying sack of shit. They have promised multiple times they will not sell the KS copies of backers. The situation is that shipping will occur in batches every two weeks based on who payed the extra costs. If you don't pay they store it until either it becomes financially viable to ship or you decide to pay after all. They are unable to give a timeline for those who do not/refuse to pay though. Yeah fricking sucks but it's hardly the first company to be in this situation.

I've back two, only one was /tg/ related. That is Judgement: Eternal Champions. I've always really loved Creature Caster, and have a few of their models already, so I jumped in when they finally paired up with an actual game and had a reason to expand their line. It's been about a year, and they seem on track to ship in September. I order the resin set, and two of the faction sets. All told, still pretty expensive, but I actually wanted to support them.

The other was the remaster for W101, which paid off in spades. There was a delay in that, so they gave everyone free Steam keys. I own that game three times now.

Taught me a lesson to never back anything from poles

Another one which i wont name, was run by a complete butthole who delivered roughly half and then had no intention of delivering the rest of the kickstarter, just pocketing the cash. I had to play dirty to get my money back.

I haven't been especially burned by any of the kickstarters I've backed, but then there's not a lot that I've backed. Every Battletech kickstarter to date, plus Shadowrun Hong Kong, Those all panned out. The worst thing to happen was that the 2014 Battletech LAM kickstarter was overpriced because nobody told them they're not supposed to charge more than the final product, but everything came as ordered. Other than that some of the additional content for the Clan Invasion kickstarter, like the pilot cards and the faction dice were badly made, but otherwise I had no horror stories like people that backed the Robotech Tactics kickstarter.

I am actually making a Tabletop Wargame and am gonna try and launch on Kickstarter in a few months. Anything in particular I should consider when launching something like this? I have an Insta and a Discord for it, but I need more followers tbh. When you were looking for something like this, where did you look? Where should I advertise to get more people interested? What are the types of things you guys wanna see, etc.?
