BBS is the most important spin-off game because it explains events leading up to the main games more tha the others which mainly just cover certain themes.
Days has a lot of backstory for the Organization, CoM establishes Axel and the Organization members absent from 2. 3D explains Xehanort in greater detail.
Watch the recap stuff or read it in 3. 3 has excellent gameplay but you'll kind of tell which teams screwed over the devs and which didn't. And you'll kind of tell which worlds felt taken away from and which weren't. The gameplay is excellent though but everything is a build up to the final boss, DLC story, and data battles ala Monster Hunter. I'd still play it for the fun gameplay. Toy Story and Monster's Inc are excellent worlds and Pirates is a fun world at least.

Heartless ansem and xemnas are dead which means master Xehanort from BBS will return. Time travel nonsense and the plan is revealed that xehanort possesses 12 other people(half of them are just him from different points of his life who time travelled and cloned themselves) to create 13 darknesses so he can create the "X-Blade" and destroy all the worlds and create a new one. all of this will be such a crazy left turn if you play 3 right after 2 and you wont know what the frick is happening.

honestly, it's better this way i think, it makes each entry a worthwhile addition, rather than "oh this one is just a random side adventure." the random side adventure stuff leads into more continuity error issues arise as different writers take on a franchise and only think "oh main numbered entries are the only story i have to care about" and start conflicting with each other. this way, every piece must be taken into consideration.
Hack writing mentality. By forcing important, plot shaking information into each game, you're effectively dragging the audience through each game regardless of the quality of gameplay, plot, or dialogue. It feels like fricking homework. Then again, I'm not surprised that's how KH was written. Disney did the same thing with the MCU.

The flaw in your logic is assuming that KH is a good example of your argument. Several of the games have big issues that affect the gameplay and writing, which they shouldn't have if sitting through all of them is crucial to understanding the whole plot.

I'm going to assume guns work on heartless considering the pirates muskets do enough damage to kill shadows. It won't release the hearts like a keyblade, but that's fine.
People bring up Sora being unable to hit heartless but that's probably just a mechanic to get you to progress the story considering characters like Aladdin uses a sword, Peter a knife, Herc his own fists. Any weapon should be fine if you use this logic but without the keyblade you're not recovering the town just going through it if you want to live. Still high level nobodies or a boss heartless would frick you guys up
I'm playing 358 Days right now and pretty much every character has explicitly stated that they can't permanently kill heartless and free hearts without the keyblade like Roxas can, but they can definitely still defeat them in some temporary manner. Even Roxas can deal enough damage with his stick.
I forget at what point they soft retconned this but until they run into sora, donald and goofy are literally incapable of beating even a single shadow despite being the most competent wizard/knight in disney town so you're 100% fricked

Looking back on it, the "Quadratum" hidden cutscene really isn't that much to be excited about, especially when compared to the previous hidden cutscenes. What's really there to be excited about? I just started KH1FM on Proud and it took me an embarassingly long time to finish Destiny Island (I did all the battles) and Traverse Town just now. I died at the big guard boss too many times. At least I've got the Dash now but I feel so fricking embarassed. Going into Wonderland.
For all it's ups and downs I care about these characters. That takes a type of skill to do, I won't discredit it. And the gameplay is on the whole fun as hell. But the OST? EVERY GAME. EVERY GAME HAS LEGEND TIER OST.

unless you are a hardcore minmaxer, it really doesn't matter. it changes the order you learn some skills and which order your stats level in. i think there is one combination that gives you an extra mana bar or item slot you otherwise wouldn't have if you didn't pick it, but otherwise it is fairly similar. if you are doing a casual playthrough where you don't care about minmaxing, just do whatever feels right. it's whatever.
I started on Proud since I figure this was a kiddie-friendly series and regular difficulty would be piss-easy. So far it's feeling about right other than how stilted the movement gets mid-combos. Hopefully KH2 makes the combat flow better when I get to it.
KH2 movement is far superior by default but I believe critical mode added a few movement abilities that made it even better.

I don't remember. I think teching was far less important because you had superior options at any given time to standing still and waiting on a hit.
honestly, the games all have some difficulty despite being aimed at a general audience. the highest difficulty available is definitely the way you should play, but you should expect an actual challenge. when i say "casual playthrough" i just mean a playthrough where you aren't trying to 100% it, do everything, etc. and are just looking to play the main story and maybe a little bit of side content here and there.

Days has a lot of backstory for the Organization, CoM establishes Axel and the Organization members absent from 2. 3D explains Xehanort in greater detail.

Watch the recap stuff or read it in 3. 3 has excellent gameplay but you'll kind of tell which teams screwed over the devs and which didn't. And you'll kind of tell which worlds felt taken away from and which weren't. The gameplay is excellent though but everything is a build up to the final boss, DLC story, and data battles ala Monster Hunter. I'd still play it for the fun gameplay. Toy Story and Monster's Inc are excellent worlds and Pirates is a fun world at least.

The flaw in your logic is assuming that KH is a good example of your argument. Several of the games have big issues that affect the gameplay and writing, which they shouldn't have if sitting through all of them is crucial to understanding the whole plot.

I'm playing 358 Days right now and pretty much every character has explicitly stated that they can't permanently kill heartless and free hearts without the keyblade like Roxas can, but they can definitely still defeat them in some temporary manner. Even Roxas can deal enough damage with his stick.

I played Proud on both and found 2's to be much more reasonable. I played 1 with +sword -shield though, so that might give me a bias, since 1 got a lot easier with second chance and leaf bracer.

unless you are a hardcore minmaxer, it really doesn't matter. it changes the order you learn some skills and which order your stats level in. i think there is one combination that gives you an extra mana bar or item slot you otherwise wouldn't have if you didn't pick it, but otherwise it is fairly similar. if you are doing a casual playthrough where you don't care about minmaxing, just do whatever feels right. it's whatever.
I started on Proud since I figure this was a kiddie-friendly series and regular difficulty would be piss-easy. So far it's feeling about right other than how stilted the movement gets mid-combos. Hopefully KH2 makes the combat flow better when I get to it.
KH2 movement is far superior by default but I believe critical mode added a few movement abilities that made it even better.
Did they make teching easier also? Most of the attack wind-ups in KH1 have such a long wait that it just feels like luck if I interrupt an attack when intentionally aiming for it.
I don't remember. I think teching was far less important because you had superior options at any given time to standing still and waiting on a hit.
honestly, the games all have some difficulty despite being aimed at a general audience. the highest difficulty available is definitely the way you should play, but you should expect an actual challenge. when i say "casual playthrough" i just mean a playthrough where you aren't trying to 100% it, do everything, etc. and are just looking to play the main story and maybe a little bit of side content here and there.
