Her lightning was a tad arbitrary, but the point of the lightning attacks is to keep in motion. It's really stupid that it's constantly happening though, since that means that you are never risk-free when attacking her. Which is why Aero is a must, it helps immensely.
Once she's a bit low on HP she'll do a bigger, more damaging lightning strike. That is really easily avoided by swimming away form her head.
in the original PS2 version pressing triangle would tell your party members to attack your lock-on target.
I'm pretty sure me and my brother beat the first phase by swimming around and mashing triangle.
Found that if you pause during one of the little mermaid rhythm segments, you can't continue, only quit, restart, or HELP. Had to pause once then did it again by accident, so I ended up watching the sea animals with that fricked up donald and goofy sing and dance 3 times.

I don't think "remember to equip the don't die to lighting band" is a matter of luck.
Proud is good. But make sure to have the sentence "Your adventure begins in the dead of night" appear after talking to the Final Fantasy characters in the first few minutes of gameplay. It'll reduce the amount of XP you need to get to max level.

Dropping Sword lowers your DPS at the start of the game but by midgame you won't notice it and you can raise your Power with items and Keyblades anyways
Picking Shield also gives Sora the earliest Guard and Lucky Strike (Lucky Strike is mandatory if you're interested in 100%ing the game, Ultima Weapon in KH1 is a ridiculous grind)

In my recent playthrough I started with the farming while playing through the story and it made the playthrough and grind way more fun. So when you're in Deep Jungle you always try to do the Black Ballade and White Mushrooms when passing through the Camp and Cliffs, same with Halloween Town and so on. Instead of ignoring the encounters and keeping it all for dead last. It halved my farming time for Ultima to my surprise, it really feels like it's the intended way of playing.
I actually did something similar, the tedium of my grind came from me unwittingly using more Dark Matters than I should have and thus I had to grind Mythril Shards.
You can't really do Serenity Powers until endgame anyways since Stopga is all but mandatory for the Pink Agaricus

The amount of time an enemy is stopped is tied to your MP bar. Stopga just increases the range of it.

you can get serenity powers with just stopra + aerora + ~10MP, they sometimes drop serenity powers so long as you can get a 40+ combo on them

Standard difficulty is how you should always play for the fist time and back when the first game was released first in japan that was the only difficulty available, so it wasn't made with proud mode in mind.
I've played KH1 on every difficulty but Proud so that's the next one. My friend who played the series for the first time after I finished it told me that it's less braindead so that's definitely the one I should play
The problem with proud mode in 1 is that depending on your choices at the start you can literally just be fricking handicapped for half the game, making the early game fricking suck.
Then near the end you get leaf bracer and second chance and the game loses all challenge, the difficulty curve is incredibly schizophrenic basically.
If you're gonna go Proud first-go, mind one factor: Stat-Up items are limited. You only get a certain amount in the entire game. NEVER use them on anyone but yourself. Cuz every endgame battle that truly matters is a 1v1 anyway.
I'm having way more trouble with just the rank and file heartless than I am with any of the bosses on proud. Those Gligar looking guys will consistently 2 shot me with that little flip kick. 2 of them just hit me immediately and it's over. You can just get juggled to death in this game

Because she deals so much damage, Giant Ursula has the most telegraphed attacks than any boss in KH, you always know exactly what move she's going to use so realistically will mostly take damage from the less predictable ligning strikes that are rather weak.
Equip yourself with all your Lightning-resistent armor to tank the small lightning strikes, swim away or behind her whenever she's about to attack

The trick is to keep reapplying Stop after every 2 or 3 hits. If you do that, you can freeze most bosses indefinitely. Literally 90% of the bosses in the game are vulnerable to Stop. The only ones which aren’t are: >Guard Armor >Stealth Sneak >Oogie Boogie >normal sized Ursula >Behemoth >both Riku fights >all the Ansem fights >all the superbosses
Everyone else can be stop-looped until they’re dead if you have enough Ethers.
Her moves are obvious you are right, but if you've picked a magic build you are fricked for damage and Mermaid sora is clunky as frick with that awful dash move. If they used removed the constant fricking lightning attack it'd be more reasonable

Hardest fight in 1 was honestly the first guard armor. Get through that and you can deal with anything. People struggle on Clayton not realising Tarzan comes with cure and aero. Always use the world characters.
I have no clue why so many people struggle with Ursula considering that she’s a stationary target with extremely telegraphed attacks. That’s not even accounting for the fact that Ariel is a ludicrously broken party member and Aero and Stop make the fight way easier.

I picked Rod and discarded Shield and started at night.
You basically picked everything that would make you more powerful during the end game, but weaker at the beginning.
You can beat the game with anything, but rod takes a long time to get defensive moves but you don't get anything you can really use defensively until level 39.
Picking Night also means you level slower at the start, which will also make the early game (until level 40) a bit tougher.

I'm just mad that apparently KH3 has like no Final Fantasy representation. I've never played it but that's what I keep hearing. The crossover of Disney and FF with the unique (and often moronic) world building of KH itself is the draw to me. Having just Disney makes it feel less magical/cool.

How do I card and how far in to the game is that one Riku fight that always filtered me?
First things first. go to Agrabah as your first Disney world so you get Genie Jafar's enemy card (push select in battle go view them). With it you are actually allowed to attack with your regular cards and without using sleights. Then, look at the Status menu to view how you actually do your sleights. You unlock them as you level up, elemental strike raids are busted as shit and some enemies can drop enemy cards that boost your elemental damage so you just don't have to think anymore.
THEN go into Jiminys journal and look at the stats for each keyblade >first hit of the combo - smash (forgot what the word was) >second - thrust >and the combo finisher
Each keyblade has a damage stat for their part in a 3-hit combo. Optimizing this only comes in after the first 6 or so DIsney worlds but it is double the damage if you do it right.
That Riku fight you mentioned comes in after about 8 hours, you'll have fought some Org members by then. All Org members have some form of elemental res btw, Larxene will heal if you hit her with lightning for example, be cautious.
I've had more fun farming Moogle in 100 acreed woods. It's one big corridor. You can walk through bushes and hit the bushes on the side for moogle points there. No resistance or though required. 400 or so Moogle Points per run, that was plenty for me. I save-scummed all my Moogle shop purchases

Yeah, if you look at the description, it uses "a bit of MP." What this means is it uses one segment of the orange gauge that you see when refilling your MP, so if you have five MP (you probably have more by now,) it basically costs 1/5 of a point of MP. It's crazy efficient compared to Thundara unless you specifically need AOE for a bunch of enemies surrounding you.

Her lightning was a tad arbitrary, but the point of the lightning attacks is to keep in motion. It's really stupid that it's constantly happening though, since that means that you are never risk-free when attacking her. Which is why Aero is a must, it helps immensely.
Once she's a bit low on HP she'll do a bigger, more damaging lightning strike. That is really easily avoided by swimming away form her head.
in the original PS2 version pressing triangle would tell your party members to attack your lock-on target.

That still works. When you are not locked onto anything pressing triangle calls party members to your side.

Proud is good. But make sure to have the sentence "Your adventure begins in the dead of night" appear after talking to the Final Fantasy characters in the first few minutes of gameplay. It'll reduce the amount of XP you need to get to max level.

The only negative when picking night is that the road to level 40 takes longer. But that is not even noticeable at all. The early game will be hard regardless and by mid game he will already be 30 or so. And if he so chooses he can then get stronger by doing side content or grinding to 40 and beyond.
There really is no reason to not pick night, Kingdom Hearts is best enjoyed by doing all content anyways.

In my recent playthrough I started with the farming while playing through the story and it made the playthrough and grind way more fun. So when you're in Deep Jungle you always try to do the Black Ballade and White Mushrooms when passing through the Camp and Cliffs, same with Halloween Town and so on. Instead of ignoring the encounters and keeping it all for dead last. It halved my farming time for Ultima to my surprise, it really feels like it's the intended way of playing.
I actually did something similar, the tedium of my grind came from me unwittingly using more Dark Matters than I should have and thus I had to grind Mythril Shards.
You can't really do Serenity Powers until endgame anyways since Stopga is all but mandatory for the Pink Agaricus

The amount of time an enemy is stopped is tied to your MP bar. Stopga just increases the range of it.
you can get serenity powers with just stopra + aerora + ~10MP, they sometimes drop serenity powers so long as you can get a 40+ combo on them
you don't even need ragnarok, you just need to be good at spamming air combos
You should always pick staff, because your magic damage is determined by your max MP.

Standard difficulty is how you should always play for the fist time and back when the first game was released first in japan that was the only difficulty available, so it wasn't made with proud mode in mind.
Unlike critical mode for 2, proud mode in 1 just feels tanky and grindy
Standard at first, then Proud on second playthrough. Proud is fine upon a first playthrough too, just some bosses are very no-fun on Proud mode.
I've played KH1 on every difficulty but Proud so that's the next one. My friend who played the series for the first time after I finished it told me that it's less braindead so that's definitely the one I should play
The problem with proud mode in 1 is that depending on your choices at the start you can literally just be fricking handicapped for half the game, making the early game fricking suck.
Then near the end you get leaf bracer and second chance and the game loses all challenge, the difficulty curve is incredibly schizophrenic basically.
If you're gonna go Proud first-go, mind one factor: Stat-Up items are limited. You only get a certain amount in the entire game. NEVER use them on anyone but yourself. Cuz every endgame battle that truly matters is a 1v1 anyway.

The trick is to keep reapplying Stop after every 2 or 3 hits. If you do that, you can freeze most bosses indefinitely. Literally 90% of the bosses in the game are vulnerable to Stop. The only ones which aren’t are:

>Stealth Sneak
>Oogie Boogie
>normal sized Ursula
>Behemoth
>both Riku fights
>all the Ansem fights
>all the superbosses
Everyone else can be stop-looped until they’re dead if you have enough Ethers.

Btw, the series will only continue to stagnate as long as Sora is the MC. It needs to get rebooted with a new cast of characters, because there's nowhere for the story to go anymore. The double damage is perfectly manageable once you get cure and Second Chance make it only marginally harder for the story fights.

I picked Rod and discarded Shield and started at night.
You basically picked everything that would make you more powerful during the end game, but weaker at the beginning.
You can beat the game with anything, but rod takes a long time to get defensive moves but you don't get anything you can really use defensively until level 39.
Picking Night also means you level slower at the start, which will also make the early game (until level 40) a bit tougher.
Not him but picking Shield is for pussies who didn't actually want to play hard mode, they just wanted to be able to say that they did.
I've only ever played KH1 on Expert/Proud while picking Sword or Staff, because I'm not a pussy.
Shield is useful for the early Lucky Strikes and Critical Pluses. That, and it also gives you the earliest possible Slapshot.
Honestly, you don’t even need those. You’re given plenty of tools within the first ring of worlds to handle most situations.
You're already past the worst of it(The Traverse Town boss). You might have to go back and forth a bit between the initially available worlds though to pick up more abilities and levels. One of them gets you Cure which will make the game much smoother.

It’s a tough fight, but it can be cheesed with Stop spells.
This fight was way easier than I remembered.
Died twice and then was able to learn most of his moves and dodge them most of the time.
And the second death was because I forgot I hadn't saved after equipping elixirs to survive his gay 1 hp move.
I have never not cheesed lingering will and some data bossfights. How do some people have the patience to not cheese it?

How do I card and how far in to the game is that one Riku fight that always filtered me?
Get the genie jafar card by beating the aladdin world and abuse it.
First things first. go to Agrabah as your first Disney world so you get Genie Jafar's enemy card (push select in battle go view them). With it you are actually allowed to attack with your regular cards and without using sleights. Then, look at the Status menu to view how you actually do your sleights. You unlock them as you level up, elemental strike raids are busted as shit and some enemies can drop enemy cards that boost your elemental damage so you just don't have to think anymore.
THEN go into Jiminys journal and look at the stats for each keyblade

>and the combo finisher
Each keyblade has a damage stat for their part in a 3-hit combo. Optimizing this only comes in after the first 6 or so DIsney worlds but it is double the damage if you do it right.
That Riku fight you mentioned comes in after about 8 hours, you'll have fought some Org members by then. All Org members have some form of elemental res btw, Larxene will heal if you hit her with lightning for example, be cautious.
Isn't it best to pick Agrabah last because that is the best place to farm Moogle? At least from what I have heard from browsing different forums.
I've had more fun farming Moogle in 100 acreed woods. It's one big corridor. You can walk through bushes and hit the bushes on the side for moogle points there. No resistance or though required. 400 or so Moogle Points per run, that was plenty for me. I save-scummed all my Moogle shop purchases

The only one I really had trouble with was Dragon Maleficent, I went mostly melee up to that point and she was an enormous pain because of her tail whip attack where she does a 360 and you HAVE to fly away to dodge, it only has a really brief telegraph that can easily be confused for another attack
Tinker Bell summon and a lot of patience did the trick for me. It's terrible though

Yeah, if you look at the description, it uses "a bit of MP." What this means is it uses one segment of the orange gauge that you see when refilling your MP, so if you have five MP (you probably have more by now,) it basically costs 1/5 of a point of MP. It's crazy efficient compared to Thundara unless you specifically need AOE for a bunch of enemies surrounding you.
Yeah I have Spellbinder+Staff start, so I either have 9 or 10 MP currently depending on my accessory choice.
