      Compared to the
      >stand in front of enemy
      >mash attack until dead
combat of every other first person rpg, I’d say it was and is breddy gud. Even “modern” first person rpgs like skyrim have less depth to their combat than KF.
Tbqtbh the only first person sword games I can think of with better combat are Chivalry/Mordhau.

Agreed. I started playing KF1 because of the last thread and it was hands down the most satisfying gaming experience I’ve had in years.
I’m currently playing through KF2 and while still decent, I’m not enjoying it anywhere near as much as I did the first. I’ve just hit level 26 and am at the part where you fight the guy Nola was looking for. He’s kicking my ass though, so I think I’ll go explore this massive castle(?) some more.

My first impression of KF3 isn’t bad so far compared to KF2. I enjoyed starting on the beach in 2, but something about the rest just felt off to me. I think a big part of it was how much time you spend in caves compared to the typical dungeons/castles. KF1 had a few cave sections, but KF2 was basically one giant cave with a few hallways in it. It didn’t feel very “medieval” imo.
We’ll see how my opinion of KF3 changes as I progress, but so far I’m enjoying the atmosphere npc dialogue.
My one complain is that most of my weapon swings don’t have any feedback like they did in KF1 and 2, where the enemies would grunt and reel back. The sword just kinda slices through, so it’s tough to tell if I’m actually hitting or not.
Also: I start with a weapon that scales with me? The fricks this shit? Are regular weapons like Short Sword even worth using?

the excellector is an unusual weapon that might throw first timers off. it doesn't scale, it evolves after you obtain certain amounts of exp, and you don't need to have it equipped. regular weapons are absolutely worth using, they actually begin to outclass it not too long after you start the game. but eventually it will evolve into its stage 2 form and outclass everything you'll have at that time, then it eventually drops off again and once again evolves to stage 3, which is its final form.

Ahh, that makes sense. I had assumed you’d need it equipped. Thanks anon.

at some point in time, (like many things on vr) this fricking game became a god damned meme. like did some butthole make a youtube video about the game and then you all found out about its existence and now worship it as some, "hidden gem". These threads are a fricking waste. The game is decent, I appreciate it... but its not some fricking amazing groundbreaking masterpiece. It doesnt suck, but its not amazing either. I swear these are just bait threads. And I guess it worked on me too.

      Anonymous

I mean, I wouldn’t say it’s a “hidden gem”. It was always fairly popular. It didn’t get 4 games, 2 half games, and 2 spin offs because it wasn’t popular.
As far as it not being ground breaking goes, I guess we can disagree on that one. At the time first person RPGs were just -
      >stand in front of enemy
      >spam attack
      >tank hits
      >heal up afterwards
KF might not be quite as strategic as OP described, but it’s certainly far more in depth combat-wise than other any first person RPG at the time.

Tbh, From always liked to release additional RPG shovelware if the first title in the series was kinda successful. Only the first King's Field is worthy of note, the rest is typical From shovelware - a mix of previously unreleased content, reused assets and corner cutting to make the games as cheap as possible, while keeping the gameplay. Even years later, they did a very similar thing with Dark Souls.

i messed with the maker and played the KF1 "remake" that comes with it(the remake sucks by the way.) you seem to already know the experience somewhat, it runs terribly on modern hardware. some people can't get it working at all. if it wasn't such a b***h to run on top of the maker being kind of unintuitive, i'd actually be interested in doing a project but i don't have the patience for it. i made some little set pieces i think are kind of cool though.

absolutely soulless. the funny thing is all the enemies that appear in kf1 have a radically different design but the maker has data for some enemies that are from kf2, 3, and even shadow tower and their designs are 1-1 direct transitions from the originals just with more polygons. it kind of makes me wonder if they botched the kf1 enemies intentionally lmao.

Interesting. there has to be a technical reason behind it, possibly the KF1 models used another format which wasn't compatible

Yeah I thought it would be fun to throw together something basic with the maker but all the usual dgvoodoo shit that I'm used to dealing with didn't work with it. The only time I've ran into a similar issue was with Interstate '76 only working with a very specific version of dgvoodoo on my system and I couldn't be bothered to go through a bunch of versions to see if maybe that's the case with SoM.

Would be cool if someone worked to export the assets to be usable in Unity or something to make it possible to do it in a more modern engine.

I like it but it really is just worse Ultima Underworld
combat is more challenging I guess, UU was really easy

Such a dumb thing to keep repeating. The similarities are entirely superficial

I didn't know you could bring him back? I thought her father was the dead guy I found with a pendant

You were correct! Eventually an NPC will tell you how to revive him.

        >like a game that a company makes so you try some of their other games including older ones
        >whoa I really like this as well!
        >gays on /vr/ get pissy over this cause they can't jerk off how super special they are for liking it first anymore because no one cares

Yeah, that does tend to be how it goes around here. They’re always the first ones into the KF threads but tend to shut up pretty quickly. Seems like more anons than not are trying and enjoying the games these past few threads, which is nice. More people to talk about the games with.

people always love it when they like something before it was cool (even if sometimes they're liars.) it just can't be helped. just take it in stride. they're allowed to be a little smug though, they probably got to buy these games for a reasonable price before all these highwaymen bandits took over the resellers market.

What's even weirder is how they insist that we are pretending like we were "always a fan" when damn near every last one of us are openly talking about how our first playthroughs were recent. Absolute fricking brain-rot.

Don't forget, the people getting pissy are newbies. We've had KF threads for as long as this board has been up and nobody ever gave a shit. In the early days of /vr/, the board culture was all about encouraging people to play games.

1 I can understand and look over, but what were they SMOKING that ended up keeping that for 2?

It’s a cool and unique style. Personally, the art style was a big reason I was drawn to the game originally.

Early 3D faces looked like trash anyway. Just look at FF7.

FF7 just has eye decals, and they look good...

But they look cartoony, which fits however may not have fit well in kings field. Maybe something more like mgs but that straddles the line too as possibly too realistic in its artistry. It is a sound choice to keep the faces blank.

some kind of stylistic choice they chose due to the limitations of the ps1 i guess.

I really like it, it gives those game a dream-like mystery.
Such a feature is only good in KF. It looked stupid in Granstream Saga.

My playthroughs of KF were recent but I've never played any dark souls, however I've been a fan of Echo Night for 15+ years

with the recent disastrous release of the Elden Rang DLC, I hope more people will be interested in trying out King's Field

I didn’t even know it released. What are people not liking about it?
I only played ER on launch. I didn’t hate it, but also didn’t enjoy it enough to finish it.
