Any other horror VNs like this or is it the holy grail? I did not think an horror VN would work since it's just static pictures on a screen but while it's not scary it's pretty good at being disturbing and having an interesting atmosphere.

No thats the peak of the genre. I enjoyed maggot baits though. Muv Luv has some nice vaguely horror sci fi bits.
I played this a couple years ago on my DSi XL via VNDS.
I didn't think the story was amazing or anything. However, the soundtrack was mesmerizing. So haunting, cold, viscous, and yet... serene.
That, and I am a sucker for weird/desolate worlds, especially those with pitch-black skies (guess I should thank The Neverhood for that), so the overall atmosphere just gripped me by the balls. This was also boosted by the fact that I read the VN in fall.
Wish there were more games like that.

Are you a lovecraft fan? I feel like its REALLY tuned towards pleasing lovecraft readers. From the obvious things like Saya herself, to the smaller details and lovecraftian themes like the mentions of jungle cults and the protagonist losing his mind. The way its able to integrate these things into the typical VN framework is crazy.
I've read some Lovecraft but I wouldn't say I am very familiar or a fan.
I mean, obviously there is this cosmic horror aspect, which is often interesting, I just didn't feel like whatever happened in the story/characterization itself warranted that much deliberation. What was impactful for me was the emotional side of things I already described. I'd kill for something similar but with more substance over its plot, though. And the idea of the meatspace was also an amazing addition, I'll admit.

You know what really drew me in wasn't the cosmic horror or the romance, it was more the general tone of the story. The arc of the protagonist going insane and killing his friends really reminded me of a well made western horror film.

Thats actually what got me to play the game in the first place.

It's definitely not a deep story to be honest. Very visceral though. You really feel the protagonist's anger.
Yeah, I pretty much agree with what you're saying.
I'd also say that the short length which is not reflective of most VNs really helped to lend the story some gravitas.
Perhaps I'd prefer it just a bit longer to go a bit more into the characters and the overall situation, but not by much.
I actually preferred it's short length. 100+ hour VNs can kinda get on my nerves even if I really enjoy them sometimes. It even lends it more of a lovecraft vibe with most of his stories being short stories. I do wish we got more really dark VNs like this with interesting premises though.
Nitroplus VNs are good in general
Return to shironagasu island. It is pretty good. Has a lot of fun characters, nice mystery
LET ME GO BACK
No one is stopping you.
Sweet Pool is Saya no Uta but gay, it was made by Nitroplus, same devs as Saya (except Urobuchi)
Kikokugai was written by Urobuchi, it's a cyberpunk action thriller but with the same Urobutcher seal of despair Saya has
Kara no Shoujo is a mystery horror, very dreary atmosphere
Maggot Baits and Euphoria are very violent and brutal
Swan Song is apocalyptic despair ludo
that's all I can think of right now
Isn't sweet pool the one about gay anal parasites?
Kara no Shoujo is now on steam under an anglicised name now I believe. Heavily recommend it but don't know if the steam version is shit or not.

Anyone tried this one?
Not horror but try Kikokugai, pretty short and the same guy wrote it.
novels are not video games
Make a /vn/ board then, genius.
thats /jaypee/
/jp/ = pussies that got overrun by vtubergays
homie, jaypee always been an idol board since the beginning, 2D or 3D.
They got JAV threads since day one.
sadly yeah, but not as bad as the time before /vt/ created
but the ones that insists on staying are mostly the worse kind of schizo tho
It's much longer, but Higurashi is really good.
You could try Subahibi, it's more of a wild ride and psychological horror, longer too. Has moments of major tension and what the frick is going on.
Nope, that's among the 10 or so worthwhile vns and about the only good horror one, I've dug through enough shit to attest to that.
120+ million people and you don't need more than the two of your hands to count the amount of decent writers in Japan.
kys coomer subhuman
this trash is one of the worst VN i ever played, and horror my ass the only decent thing about it was the soundtrack and that's it the rest is eroge VN tier of garbage
>filtered by e-girl sex
You can always play the censored steam version, cuck.
i a proud pedochad you homosexual but i do not give turd game as pass just because of dicky like any shameless coomer weeb do
go play a good VN like Hotel Dusk or something, if you want weeb shit then try Time Hollow it's kinda generic but still leafues above Söy Of Anus
Mid
Not a VN but Black Souls
Nitro+ makes exclusively kamige.
I don't know if you would describe world-ending catastrophe as horror but if you would then Swan Song is in a league of its own.
