I love how the tournament is carefully structured to allow for as little power level shitflinging as possible. Steven and Cynthia are the actual most popular champions among fans so they are #3 and #2 respectively with Ash being the only one allowed to beat them. Iris is still a kid so she's easily sacrificed and people can cope by saying she hasn't reached her potential. We completely dodge an Ash-Alain rematch and in fact Alain is not allowed to measure himself against anyone but #1, who beats him handedly. The only matchup with moderate shitpost potential is Lance v Diantha and no one actually feels that passionately about either of them.

This episode showed Ash react to Iris' loss with (seeming) anger so I'm guessing he woke up to the level of competition and wants to beat Cynthia badly now. I wouldn't be shocked if he's viewing Steven as just an annoying obstacle to blow past to beat Cynthia for Iris and then finally get his goal of challenging Leon in the finals. Scans have even stated that Ash is doing this for 'his friends' against Steven so it seems likely.

Nope you can only use one at a time and the Masters 8 rules that each trainer can only do one gimmick each battle. Ash can do all three if he wanted to though so he's basically going at this handicapped from his full potential. This tournament is to see who gets the second place.
Cynthia or one of the elite four beat him. Tobias won the tournament, and the winner of the tournament means they're eligible to challenge the Elite 4 and the champion. Since later on in the last episode of Sinnoh, we see Flint challenging Cynthia, that means the Elite 4 also have their own mini tournament to see who can challenge Cynthia. Flint, or one of the other Elite 4 beat Tobias since Tobias isn't challenging Cynthia.
Don't know why people are in denial about this. Every single time Ash faced an Elite 4 member (before Gen 5 at least), he never even came remotely close to beating them. Ash got closer to beating Tobias than he did for any of the elite 4 at the time.
