There are almost no good horror games like there are movies.
I don't know why.
It's not that I'm not easily scared, quite the opposite, I almost had a cardiac arrest from that fat homosexual in the first Outlast. It's just that most horror games are bad games overall.
SOMA isn't even a horror movie, moron. There's literally one short segment of "scary" stuff where some Black person chases you for two minutes and doesn't even kill you when he catches you, and that's it.
It LITERALLY never tries to scare you with anything, what the frick are you talking about?
It's like saying Observer is a horror too
Story is an after thought for horror games, just needs to be serviceable enough and let the atmosphere and sound design and some clever puzzles do the rest.
I for one love the fact it drags on. I felt exhausted by the end of the game but the good kind, like what characters should feel by the end of horror movie. It just had this opposite effect on me where it immersed me even more and got me to push through to the end.
I really fricking enjoyed the art direction. Whomever those lads were, I hope they are doing well in this industry nowadays. This is also the last decent alien product. The saddest part is, it was just mid.
I completed it yesterday and this was my exact tought
Taylor , the woman with the glasses who we , inexplicably side with, is an Agent of Weyland Yutani, and Ripley despises Yutani. Why THE FRICK would she suddenly side with her?
Why are we antagonizing the tatted dude when we are working on accomplishing the exact same shit, i.e crashing the station into the gas giant vs blowing it up.
This bugged my so much I cannot give the game more than 7/10.
Ultra shit writing and ending.
Ripley is at no point working towards destroying the station, she tried to get to Anesidora to escape. The only thing that was thrown into the gas giant was a lab module with the alien trapped on it.
maybe , but nots my point.
Why did she suddenly side with Taylor when taylor is a fricking some common Yutani worker even but a agent and Ripley knows it.
I mean, if she made it this far it's pretty fricking clear she insists very much on not dying, so trying to get Taylor to stop the ship from doing the thing is pretty in-character.
Marlow is grief-stricken and probably suicidal so it's not surprising he's okay in a situation like this, but people in crisis situations usually really, really want to live. That's not shit writing in the slightest and I don't see why the game would need to explicitly say that yes, Ripley is still interested in not dying.
Goddamn I love the aesthetic of this game so much.

Yessss.
Side question does anybody remember the scene early on in this game (just before you get the puzzle solving gizmo). There's a long hallway with a dead person sitting in a chair.
I'm almost certain this is an homage to the Polito reveal scene in System Shock 2. Anybody know the area I'm talking about?
playing this in vr was one of my favorite video game experiences. it's a shame the team is back to churning out bland total war games instead of making a sequel to this
If I remember correctly is "get killed by the alien 100 times" or something lame.
What baffles me is how they got away with it. I was a QA tester in the 360/PS3 days and Microsoft quickly laid down some rules to put a cap on the flood of moronic/impossible achievements in the early days i.e. the gamerscore value must be evenly divisible by 5 (thanks to Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter I'll never have a score ending in a 5 or 0).
One of the very first rules Microsoft amended was "no failure-condition achievements" which I 100% agreed with. Don't hand out achievements for losing. Yet today I see failure-condition achievements everywhere. Either they got rid of that rule or stopped giving a shit. Regardless any producer that thinks failure achievements are fun should neck themselves immediately.
TEW1 is pretty mediocre, TEW2 is a pretty good game. Unfortunately you need to play TEW1 to understand TEW2 (or at least, Seabass' past and his relationships with Kidman/Mobius
>Weird, I felt as though the game overstayed its welcome by a good 5 hours and if anything, wished it were shorter.
This is one of the most disgusting and moronic notions ever. Why are people like this?
Too long for you? Stop playing. Let us enjoy more hours of pure kino.
>reactor core >ok that was awesome now time for an escape climax >go back to dealing with human gangs for an hour >long walk and talk segment on a cargo ship you don't care about >kidnapped by aliens >retrace steps back to same spot you were kidnapped >FRICK YOU YOU'RE FLOATING IN SPACE NOW
that and it being a little too transparent at times with immersive sim for babies thing.
It was a 10/10 game right up to the moment where you blow up the ship's engine or whatever the frick that was. The final quarter where there are tons of aliens in every corner is kinda meh
Alien is scary until you get the flamethrower; even on the hardest difficulty one well timed burst of flame makes him run away. All fear goes out the window at that point, plus you can stealth literally every other section except one, where you're forced to fight a few synths after picking up an item
I don’t mind a relatively long game, but Alien Isolation’s length is absurd. There’s limits to everything anon, and I think a 40 hour runtime for a horror game is several steps into the ridiculous territory. There was an incredible climactic moment about exactly 20 hours in for me. That would have been a great place to end it.
>boring filler content
Yeah you think I didn't know you were gonna go there? The retort to this is extremely simple: you don't deserve to play such content, because you can't appreciate it. There are two options you can choose from
Option 1 >I'm bored with the content, I'll stop playing, I'll look up the ending on youtube. People who are bored can switch it off, or play more when they feel like it, as the extra length content is available forever
Option 2 >I'm bored with the content so I'll actively campaign to fricking make it shorter and end 5-10 hours earlier, so that it ends when I want it to end and people who would love more content will NEVER get it, and due to this feedback future games will be shorter on purpose and the extra content will never materialize
and you choose Option 2 like a fricking butthole who doesn't understand we will never ever get a chance to get more content for this game. Never ever.

People like you are precisely why we are not ever getting Alien Isolation 2 and are getting HYENAS instead, won't be boring will it.
Enjoy HYENAS.

Calm your autism. I’m not campaigning for a shorter game. It came out ten years ago. I am saying it’s horribly paced and SHOULD have been shorter.

SOMA

It's like saying Observer is a horror too
>SOMA isn't even a horror movie
I don't know why I called it a movie.
I meant "game"
SOMA it's more "disturbing" than it is "scary". Which is better.
Story is an after thought for horror games, just needs to be serviceable enough and let the atmosphere and sound design and some clever puzzles do the rest.

*Is not
Because she doesn't want to die?
Nah, Amnesia: The Bunker was the last good horror game, but it got much of its concept from Isolation.
You're gonna be weirded out they expanded on the ending in some machinima mini series, wtf.
?t=407
True. The Bunker is the first real good horror game they put out since Penumbra.
>NNNOOOOOOOO YOU CAN'T USE M41AS BECAUSE Y-YYYOU C-CCAN'T
Don't care, Let's Rock
There's one problem with horror games. You dont actually die in real life.
I mean, if she made it this far it's pretty fricking clear she insists very much on not dying, so trying to get Taylor to stop the ship from doing the thing is pretty in-character.
Fully agreed.
And despite that, instead of a sequel we get fricking HYENAS.
Goddamn I love the aesthetic of this game so much.

oh what the hell? how is it possible this developer made isolation?
>how is it possible this developer made isolation?
That is a big mystery my friend.
Oh my god it's true.

>misfit aniti-heros
Did all of the developers with soul quit CA or something?
frick that part was kino.

This.
But I would put the Dead Space remake next to it too.
Only 3 to go
Collectathon run for 2.
The hidden one is the most moronic fricking achievement that exists.

i got filtered / bored. i feel like im not alone in this
Certainly not, there's loads of adhd people out there.
ill beat it eventually. did you beat evil within too? if so which one is better? they are both in my backlog
EW is more action orientated, closer to RE4 than AI.
If you find AI slow paced then EW should be ideal for you.
TEW1 is pretty mediocre, TEW2 is a pretty good game. Unfortunately you need to play TEW1 to understand TEW2 (or at least, Seabass' past and his relationships with Kidman/Mobius
kid just play em both, marquee horror games aren't an unlimited resource.
>wish it was 30 hours
Weird, I felt as though the game overstayed its welcome by a good 5 hours and if anything, wished it were shorter.

alot could have been condensed but people who say the game should have ended at the gemini airlock are moronic

the hibitation decks with the vie-girln track was great, should have just ended there.
Also own it on Steam, moron. I'll play on whatever platform is coziest, and at the time, 2017, couch X360 gaming was the coziest
Amnesia the Bunker did this shit better and with a far scarier monster and setting.
100% disagreed. The Alien was much scarier.
Alien is scary until you get the flamethrower; even on the hardest difficulty one well timed burst of flame makes him run away. All fear goes out the window at that point, plus you can stealth literally every other section except one, where you're forced to fight a few synths after picking up an item
I really need to give it a replay. I haven't played it since it first came out. Any QOL updates or mods I should install for a revisit?
Unpredictable Alien Mod is worth a look if you tired of it always being magnetically attached to you on that 1st playthrough.
It doesn’t fricking end. I love a lot of the ideas but about halfway through it becomes the worst paced game ever made.
Oh my fricking god
>playing an atmospheric game like this just to get to the end
Filtered. FRICK OFF.
I don’t mind a relatively long game, but Alien Isolation’s length is absurd. There’s limits to everything anon, and I think a 40 hour runtime for a horror game is several steps into the ridiculous territory. The only result that can come from b***hing about a "long game" is less content in the future. Less fricking content.
