I actually don't have a problem with the idea of regional variants. it makes sense from a biological perspective, and tons of games have monster variations. why invent an entirely new Pokemon when the concept would fit with an old Pokemon just fine? why shouldn't they be able to iterate on their past designs instead of them just being static forever? it bridges the new and the old and makes those old Pokemon relevant again.
I think if gamefreak had been doing regional variants back in Gen 3 or 4, nobody would complain.
GameFreak makes about 20 of them each gen since gen 7. if it was only something they did every once in a while it wouldn't be so egregious but it really does feel like their just purposefully being lazy. in gen 7's case it's pretty obvious that they only existed for Kanto pandering. most of the time, Regional Variants are made to outclass the original mon entirely so it's arguable worse than cross gen evos because at least those allow the pre evolutions to use Eviolite. those are some reasons to dislike regional variants
