    >Nvidia flickering issues on wayland will finally be fixed...
as in, there's some confirmation on exact new wayland fixes for new driver? source?

i'm on 3080ti with 550 driver and wayland runs perfectly fine on Plasma, but i wanted to use Sway, and Sway absolutely shits itself with nvidia. what a pain, because otherwise wayland runs way smoother, would love to have some of that

Civilization 6, windows version through proton.

In may 15, the driver version that supposedly fixes flickering for good will be released.

      >waylard

Yeah me too fellow X11 Chad.
But I still want to it get better.

wayland buttholes finally merged an explicit sync protocol that will work with nvidia's driver release coming in may.
those frickers will find some other way to sabotage the linux desktop however.
      >i wanted to use Sway
never use software written by drew devault if you don't want your computer to get space aids, especially when your gpu is nvidia.

      >buying nvidia gpu
      >wayland
This meme is very overexaggerated for the current state of things. I've got wayland Plasma session on my nvidia gpu, and the biggest issues were all related to tremendous amount of bullshit devs put into systems in order to prevent nvidia users from running wayland.
      >install kde
      >can't see session
      >gdm blocks wayland sessions if nvidia gpu is detected
      >throw out this block of script from config
      >wayland sessions are now present
      >kde runs nice
      >install sway
      >sway session appears, but crashes on startup
      >tried running sway as a normal executable
      >YOU HAVE NVIDIA GPU ANON, IF YOU WANT TO RUN SWAY, ADD --I-UNDERSTAND-MY-GPU-IS-TRASH AS A PARAMETER
      >had to modify session file to run it at all

Once you disable all of the """""safety"""" and run it, KDE runs reasonably well on latest drivers. I understand where it's coming from, tried running Sway, mouse cursor was gone and I had to add some weird obscure environment variables to fix it, then windows were flickering, but all in all I really don't think current state of nvidia deserves the treatment they get. My only singular issue on Plasma is that some videos are flickering in mpv (but, for example, not in VLC), literally every single other thing runs flawlessly at this point. Hope devs will get off nvidia ass and remove all of those nvidia-killing conditionals once they release a stable driver and openly praise it for being wayland-friendly, because this is ridiculous

You sound like you know what you are doing anon, may I ask for help?
I use KDE Arch and 550 drivers.
When I boot into Wayland, I get completely black screen(except I can see conky for some reason). taskbar, konsole, etc nothing works and I have to shutdown via ctrl+alt+f2.
        How can I unfrick that?

          Anonymous

Not sure if I'll be of any use, but let's give it a shot. First things
          >can you see the mouse cursor moving and all?
          >are you starting wayland through gdm/lightdm/whatever, as an ordinary session, or are you trying some unusual stuff like starting wayland through terminal commands in ctrl+alt+f2 virtual terminal?

          >conky
That implies you're not running default clean session as it is. Are you sure you're not accidentally executing some custom session you wrote long time ago and forgot about it? Or maybe better approach, the good question to ask here is why conky runs at all. Do you have any ideas on why conky would execute? Where is the exact point that it starts up, maybe you've added it some unusual place like .profile in your home folder?

If you're dailying X11 KDE and you've added conky as a startup element in KDE settings, then i guess we know that at very least conky started up from KDE startup procedure. For starters, I'd add some terminal window in the exact same way you've added conky [somewhere], and then I'd see if it runs and can be used in session, that would give you some good info on whether it's a problem with wayland or just session itself.

            Thanks anon.
Yes I boot normally from enter your login screen(sorry I forgot its name) Arch throws at me after selecting it from GRUB. Conky is set to start on login, my only other script is the one that sets correct DPI values for my monitor. This problem existed before I added that, so I don't think that's the culprit.
Anyway, I added terminal as an autostart option. Booted into Wayland. I could see my mouse, conky and the terminal I added. I tried to run a few commands. Some didn't work, giving weird errors, but I could manage to get dolphin running. That's something at least. I also checked from my router that my computer indeed was connected to it.
I am assuming some configuration somewhere is fricking me over. I will try some more and hopeful get a more clear, useful error message.

I haven't had an nvidia card in a while, but getting into a wayland session required setting nvidia_drm.modeset=1 as a kernel parameter back then.

I got an error about something called "simple_drm" when I tried to run some stuff from konsole.
            I will look into this.

It could very well be that it's not needed anymore, I think I was on 530 or 535 driver version.
Nvidia has improved their wayland support a lot in the last 10 months.
Could have also been nvidia-drm.modeset=1 (with - instead of _), don't know if it matters.

Well that was something. Some thoughts:
Some things work mostly fine, but the flicker is sometimes eye rape levels of bad. 1 game flickered non stop and was completely unplayable.
Performance difference in uncapped games seem to be between 5 to 10 percent in the games I tested.
Bizarre behavior when it comes to V-sync. Most games are capped 2 frames below my refresh rate for some reason. Also even when I turn it off in game, it still seems to be on? I noticed increased judder and sometimes flicker but never saw a single torn frame. Only when I set it to fullscreen I can truly disable V sync. I am seeing "Screen tearing - allow in fullscreen windows" setting in KDE display settings. I suppose it is related to that? Still have no idea why my framerate is locked 2 frame below refresh rate though.
See ya again in after May 15 with Nvidia 555 driver I guess. But I am happy that it is an option now.

              Anonymous

I think in novideo's case you are waiting for more explicit sync patches to trickle into the upstream.

Afaik pretty much every other relevant party(Kwin, wayland) already implemented it.
When Nvidia releases the relevant driver next month, we all should be good to go.
Of course, that's all without any unforeseen bugs or other shenanigans.
                I am cautiously optimistic though.

you could use a file recovery tool if you didn't zero the disk

Depending on how large the save file is it can be quite unlikely to be salvaged.
        Probably worth a shot, though.

          Anonymous

if the disk wasn't used, chances are most files are there
file names are not preserved during recovery,
I suggest using the likely size of the save file to identify it
or find some string that's present in all such files and then use 'grep' to find the file
common file types (like jpg, png, zip) will be identified, but some proprietary file type may not be identified by the recovery tool
