Rellana is not Malenia. Shes much worse, actually. The only difficult part to Malenia was handling water fowl. Rellana just never stops attacking. Its like watching a tekken character do a 10 string. And since she uses two weapons she can clip you often with her huge range, strong tracking, constant movement, and slightly delayed second swings. It only gets worse in the second phase.

As Souls went on the scale kept tipping towards the bosses. BB was an exception specifically because of the rally system, it let you match the increased aggression.
DS2 was full of bullshit to cash in on the "hardcore" crowd then DS3 followed BBs lead by making the bosses uber aggressive while stripping all the added movement options from BB.
It's a steady climb in boss aggression from DeS onwards, by the time ER came out it became comical with all the flips and feints, compare Flamelurker to Margit.
I was fine with DS3 for the most part. I think the only true bad case is Friede, where I agree with your statement. I skipped DS2, so I can't speak for this one.
I do agree that they shit the bed with ER's boss design. I hate that using spirit ashes makes it way too easy, but they seem to have them in mind when designing the bosses...
I think the most egregious examples in 3 were from the DLCs though there definitely were a handful in the base game, I remember Pontiff being a son of a b***h. At least in 3 they gave you a breather being super aggressive bosses, ER is exhausting when even the reused optional bosses are spamming attacks like they're on meth.
You know, I think you make a good point. I think it's that breathing window that they give you that made me enjoy DS3 somewhat (except Friede). ER bosses do not feel that rewarding when beating them. On my first playthroughs, I had a harder time beating Nameless King than Malenia, but it felt great beating NK and I only remember feeling annoyed after killing that rotten b***h.

Anyway, you fight the same soldier bunch, but now they work for Mesmer and have axes and slightly different armor. You fight the same dogs, but now they are burning. You fight the same wandering nobles, but not they are engulfed with shadow (no actual difference). You get some more bird cancer (new birds), and you fight the same scholars from Raya Lucaria.
I played for maybe 5-6 hours and I am at the second boss, the one from OP's image. Both that one and the first boss, the lion, are overtuned, imo.

Shields are an amazing option in ER and I'm really surprised more people don't use them. Fully upgraded and with a Greatshield Talisman you use practically no stamina when you block.
I beat her using a Medium shield with 65 guard boost. I can't imagine how little you take with something like the Fingerprint shield.

havel shield was very good, they are good in all the games. In DS1 is where they were the most useless because the content aint that hard to need them, grass crest shield on your back is more comfy. Greatsheild of Artorias was overpowered though.
DS3 made 90% of builds shit
Shield worked for every boss in the base DS3 game except for the final boss. Lothric does chip damage to you slowly, but you can just block everything and heal occasionally. All of the bosses you can just block them. The only boss that just fricks you up through a block is the last boss.
The DS3 DLC bosses are bullshit though, maybe you could block the demon twins and maybe you could chip damage block gael, but I feel like I tried it at one point and it didn't work.

if you were in melee combat with someone and they have a massive shield with good grip on their end, you're fricked it's difficult to bypass it, ER should let you actually bash for respectfully dmg when you use a shield also because in real life it works the same way, block attacks then bash the shit out of someone but obviously making it too realistic would be overpowered

I've been LARPing as a Carian battle-mage since the release of this game so finally beating this b***h and getting her armor set and sword has been kino of the highest order
Actually there's quite a few boss spazz attacks in the game that get cold wienered if they smack into a greatshield. Especially if you're using the ant skull plate.
Ok I just beat her. Here’s some tips I figured out. First phase is pretty ez once you get the hang of it. When the boss does that thing where she jumps to the side quickly and attacks don’t roll straight away, roll just a bit after if you don’t you will get it by the follow up upward swing. When she fired the blue swords that attack you immediately roll forwards, the boss will come to you and it’s probably the easiest move to punish. Sometimes he will follow up with a combo after that but I found it very rare. To dodge the combos I can’t explain you will learn after a while from just dying.
Now regarding second phase play very safe. When he lighting up his swords you can get 2 strong attacks in that will likely stun. After riposte hit another strong attack but stay close to him. If you don’t instead of doing the easier to dodge fire aoe move he will do the sword slash magic that I found harder to dodge. After that to dodge don’t spam roll you want to SPRINT and wait for opening. He will do the same easy move with the sword projectile magic this phase just with more swords that can be easily punished. The moon move is also easy to dodge just jump three times. If you are far away jump towards the boss as the moons are falling if you do this you have time to charge attack him when he hits the floor.

Killed her solo at level 150, a few tips:
>you can block magic/fire, that inclues the twin moons
>don't try to block her sidestep attack, it goes behind the shield
>if you block the last hit from a combo you get a free guard counter
>during the first phase don't be scared to trade a few hits to build stagger
>it's possible to dodge pretty much everything in phase 2
This is the only boss I had to memorize the moveset in order to win, she really fricked me up. In the end I ended up using a two-handed greatsword because my damage with a shield was too low
I managed to beat her with a broken controller that won't let me move backwards. Did take quite a bit of time though.

I decided to focus on as much as possible on that part of the map without crossing the bridge. I try to explore everywhere and it made it easier to break things up like that.
I think I'll follow suit now that I know Rellana is the other way. Plus it looks like the bridge leads to the Scadutree so I'm assuming the other way is easier

If you cross the big bridge, she's at the end of that next segment of gameplay. Literally the end of that line.
Once you cross the bridge and start doing the castle dungeon 1 - 1.5 hours with exploring everything (there's not much)

Some of you frickers are going to hit a wall again on hippo boss. Legit I felt defeated and didn't think I could kill it without summons. But, I adapted and realized I and fighting this wrong.

I beat her with a Great Mace and Lion's Claw. Jump R2, alot of her shit you can jump over. Its a cancer fight, prologue to other cancer fights of AOE spam or anime combos. EVERY single remembrance boss I've fought has had shit AOE shit going on and its a clusterfrick. A real "mom when its my turn to play"

I just beat her RL 115 with a +22 colossal weapon. Fight got a LOT easier when I started strafing/dodging to the left
unironically it feels like the game is forcing you to play that way. The only strategy for most of them seems to be to hit therm with a great sword to topple them

Is everyone on the dev team and QA just absolutely fricking cracked at the game and do it with other builds, or is everyone just using Cold and Bleed? No it doesn't soul level doesn't automatically mean more damage. Is you're strength 60? Because if it is, we should do about the same damage. I dual wield katanas and each one does around 600 damage. I stacked a lot of effects though. I used Golden Vow, Crab, the Physic, Winged Sword Insignia, stacked bleed and frost to do about as much DPS as possible. Also level yourself with the Scudutree fragments, I was at level 3 on that when I beat her

SL 220 - 260 doesn't matter much since stats reach soft caps at 60, it just allows you to use more weapons without specializing the character around it

Frost works exactly like bleed which is I think a flat 10% health decrease. Adding both means you can do a 20% health decrease which is a lot.

Yeah, which is why it's good to put it on a katana as they have bleed built-in so if you add frost, it will proc both.

I'm doing no damage with my sword of night and flame and the weapon arts are too slow so I can only rarely light her on fire but I'm not dropping my favorite sword.
if you think she's bad, just wait for Golden Hippo. So far my start has been to not attack at all because any attack long than a nano second that isn't followed by 17 rolls means you get hit

I've been trying to help people beat her after getting past her myself, but her tracking and target swaps are so fast that if the host lags a little bit I get hit by the moonlight blade art even as I see the projectile graphic going through the other guy.
Even with that 1 in 10 attempts bug aside though, I've been summoned like 50 times no joke and I haven't seen a single kill as a phantom. The HP scaling is rough, and hosts die soooo easy.
So far my only real issue is how much health she has in comparison to everything else. Seems like a ridicuous spike out of nowhere. She seems more like she should be a glass cannon type of boss. Id rather she do more damage but have less health.

A lot of her attacks whiff if you hug her body at least in the first phase. Helps you get more hits to get to the 2nd phase faster
Does anyone else just find the DLC kind of boring? Every dungeon has been mostly a straight line with mostly basic humanoid enemies. I replayed Stormveil Castle recently and its mindblowing how much more to it there is compared to the DLC dungeons. Not to mention how many enemies are just straight up from the base game like the dogs and bats. A good amount of the bosses just feel like NPCs with their stats cranked up to 100.
The open world genuinely feels a lot emptier. People joke about enemies guarding crafting materials in the main game but in the DLC you find enemies guarding absolutely nothing. The dungeons, as you said, also feel very short and simplistic. You think you'll be there for maybe an hour or two but you're done in like 30 minutes.

Summons really are a mistake. I'd rather them be balanced around not having them. I don't know if it's just me, but Melania feels really fair without summons because she at least has phases of attack and not attacking.
The main thing that makes Malenia feel "fair" to me is that she staggers on heavy attacks since she's a DEXgay glasscannon. Rellana is clearly the same kind of boss but she poises through everything.
I can't believe I'm stuck with this shit game, because Snoy refuses to patch BB with 60 fps and From will never Remaster DS1 with all the missing content.
the difference between me soloing rellana vs using a +4 mimic tear vs then upgrading that to a +9 mimic tear was night and day difference of literally getting shat on with no openings or completely annhilating her with my hands behind my back, frick open world balance because now anyone can just say teehee i first tried the boss and it means nothing because theres no baseline

They're a 4-5% damage buff for each level and a fairly decent amount of resistance, which probably won't make a big difference if you're already wearing heavy armor. It's not insignificant.

According to the wiki there's 20 levels. I assume they created this system because they wanted some progression because if you do everything in the base game and are level 150+ there's not much more levels will do for you. You don't get damage or much defense.
Because otherwise everyone would have steamrolled the DLC in like 6 hours, and the myth of difficulty would have shattered

im not 100% certain but I think you are locked into at most 3 (maybe 4 if i was bad at exploring) scudtree blessings prior to the Rellana fight, at which point you bypass her chokepoint and then gain access to a new area. You can definitely rush straight to the lion or go explore and get +3 though

Why do people forget that in das1 , bossed were made to be CHEESED because the game was unforgiving? Hell the old DaS1 beginners guide literally told you to use every possible advantage you have because the enemies will do the same, this includes shooting them from range where they cant reach you or abusing the terrain. It was really only Artorias where people got this idea of an homorable 1 on 1 fight because Artorias was the first boss with a semblance of humanity that people wanted to duel. Thats fine and all but from wants to pander to everyone so they keep escalating boss fights to the point where every boss is a dbz character but to give other players a fighting chance, the easy mode is either a bullshit build that you spam over and over as opposed to the slow methodical playstyle of the old games.
Thats the problem a lot of companies end up facing some maliciously like westerners and others through good intentions like From, you cant please everyone, and while having hard as frick bosses with optional cheese builds works for mega casuals and tryhards like me, it doesnt work for the mid level player, you and the rest of Ganker.
Its probably why Ganker likes Sekiro that much, i find it pretty easy and simplistic but i can tell its tailormade difficult for the average person and no one else (which is why casuals cried so much for an easy mode when it released).
Even more literally every boss has a gap closer opener that slams or forces your character to roll into the fricking wall or screen. It was novel when ornstein did it in das1 but its fricking lame and gay now when every major boss does it since its almost always a fricking grab attack.

I've put 500+ hours each in every single souls game, even 300 into sekiro. I just think this DLC is too hard. It's not fun. I like getting my shit pushed in, but I've never once in souls history had to change my build outright for a boss (even when using holy weapons lategame ER). But it feels like my build is useless against some of these bosses and even regular enemies.
I don't care if you think I need to git gud. I no hit das1, SL1d das 3 and bloodborne, and no bonfired ds2. I have nothing left to prove to myself for difficulty and just want to have fun. This DLC isn't fun. The legacy dungeons suck too. I'm really disappointed in the loot and how small they are.

the damage enemies do is actually insane, that paired with how the camera likes to look up and rotate out of control has led to my main defensive strat being roll spam and praying I don't get hit
with scadu blessings and my armor I have 66%~ phys absorption, 71%~ if i drink a flask with a tear to raise it higher. I think I can hit base 70% phys absorption if I can get scadu blessing to max level, keep it up tank bro. 99 vigor is a bit much though. I only lose half my health to things like dragon fire.
