People say HL3 is their trump card for shit goes south but I think we're at the point where amount of people who'd get hyped from that are aging out faster than new blood is coming in.
So who the frick knows? Will that fat frick Gabe really let himself die before making it happen?

70 billion seems a bit high. does anyone know the actual numbers? has gaben ever told anyone?

Steam was estimated to make $4 billion a year back in 2017. Considering how much the industry exploded the past few years thanks to the wu flu, it's probably around $9-10 billion today.

You can say that about all companies.
Idk waiting for it to be worthless.
You could literally buy gigantic Titanic size ships and have a neverending party.
Have full simulation building's that copy game levels.
Make every npc a real girl in every game.

You can't really. Most other companies we know exactly where they're pissing their money.

I don't know but you could easily look it up because they are a public company. Valve is private company and does not have not to disclose their financials, which is the the whole point of the original question moron.

They cancelled HL3 because it was clearly going to turn out shit. Even when Valve actually made games, they always cared more about the technology aspect over the, you know, game aspect. Only the technology aspect can draw them out now (i.e meme VR with alyx).

Valve reached a point where they did not need to make games anymore, in an industry where developers are constantly jumping between companies to maximize their pay. They probably lost a lot of talent during their downtime after L4D2. They only have a few hundred employees.

HL3 will never come out. No matter how good it is, mere announcment of the game would send hype and expectations through the roof that final product could never reach.

And let's just face this, HL1/HL2 formula of gameplay is outdated and majority of normies getting on hype wagon would be bored to death as they're used to modern CoD.
And deviating from "typical" HL gameplay would piss off oldgays.
The bar is set so high that no matter which route they choose it would never be good enough.

I'd honestly rather get Alyx 2 instead

What do you mean? The corridor type of level design where there's only 1 way forward?

No RPG elements present in almost every FPS nowdays
Medkits and shields instead of regeneration
No "epic" cutscenes that take control away from the player to perform some ebin feats
Relatively "slow" action compared to contemporary shooters
The list just goes on, HL2 is what, almost 20 years old now, which i can barely believe myself, but it shows.

Good, I'm glad valve is not thinking of only profit and chooses to only make games they know are going to be worth their time and ours. Im glad they're not like every other fricking company out there. I'll take 1 good game game every 2 decades over 2 decades worth of dogshit.

Remember, HL3 isn't happening until GNU/Linux use on Steam hits 3%, and it will not be coming to Windows.

Valve aren't EA. If you want yearly releases of the same game, go play EA games.
Valve has ~350 employees, and they focus entirely on pushing the industry forward.
Sometimes they miss, sometimes they hit big.

I'd rather they honor their existing word to the community, finish Artifact Foundry, and hold the promised million-dollar tournament.

Valve screwed over the Artifact fanbase by cancelling the Artifact 2.0 beta without even allowing users to invite friends like they said they would in January 2021 and does not deserve your financial support for these gross consumer-unfriendly practices.

Corporate vacations and yearly bonuses in the millions of dollars. Why protrude effort in anything outside of the Steam marketplace, esports titles, and microtransactions since that is a majority of the revenue?

Gaben just uses his portion of the money to buy knives and pursue new technologies to use in vidya like BCI. Think of how much money Valve lost with R&D and production of VR and steam boxes. Hope he has enough in savings since apparently he is going through a divorce right now.

I think hl3 cant happen until another gordon in stasis time skip. Think about how much of a dramatic shift hl2 was from hl1. It was necessary to make a sequel that felt like the next leap forward for fps and games in general and the freedom to create that is probably what kept the team going. Valve were on track for hl3 at the end of hl2. Once they started doing the episodes the story got stuck in stasis. Alyx retconning you know what does nothing to fix the mass of unfinished unresolved plot lines. No team wants to work tying up loose threads from 15 years ago. If valve are going to make a hl3 then that next vr game better wrap it all up. The borealis, who wins the war, gman true intentions. All of it. You'd be surprised how suddenly everyone would want to work on hl3 if they were given the freedom the hl2 devs had.

I think you are right. the stasis could happen part way through, after resolving a couple of major hl2 plots, do a new setting from then on. Borialis could be a non event, just pick up a new weapon there and sink it. Enter a portal to combine homeworld, see they have been taking slaves from every system, some have escaped and formed underground communities... G-man is known to a couple of the leaders of these communities but under different identities that match their own physiology. Umm... That's all I got
