The Superstar Saga and Inside Story remakes did have some characters redesigned to be more like New Super Mario Bros, so there's that. There were no Mario & Luigi games besides Paper Jam during the "mandate" period, so there's really not much evidence if it would have been affected.

It's not a mandate but a guideline if anything, mainly for 3rd parties. Every company has a guideline for their IP's more or less. Tanabe is full of shit but I still stand by the notion that there was an attempt to homogenize Mario and to cut back on some of the series with his name on it. Look at the first two Strikers games and then look at the recent game, it has a more "Mario" look to it.
Considering that Dream Team utilized Bowser's abilities from BiS I wouldn't be surprised if in a fight against him he used the vacuum block, or if there are giant battles again he will almost kill himself to activate his giant form.
I really did think at first that it was just a remake of superstar saga, but the fact its a new game really does mean that they listened to the fans that bought the smrpg remake and the thousand year door remake, and finally decided to make good mario rpg games again after all these years.

We saw a standard jump used early in the trailer, and the move where Luigi bumps Mario's Hammer with his own from behind looks way too complex to be considered the standard. At absolutee worst I think they might move them into the Jump and Hammer command blocks under a menu so the flashier item moves can still have their own block (as in, you select Jump or Hammer, and instead of automatically moving to enemy selection it drops down a menu to select which attack, ala Paper Mario).
She stayed a bit too long, and being an ass to people who have saved you and the world multiple times while you were there watching doesn't garner much support.

Yes, the games were always easy, but it got EVEN EASIER than that and there is no denying it. There was even a Switch game where one of the Gyms wont let you enter unless you have Pokemon with a type advantage over the leader.

Gen 4 and 5 have some of the toughest gyms, bosses, and champions in the series. Not like gen 3 battle frontier tough, but main story gen 4 and 5 are definitely harder than gen 1 unless you're an absolute dumb frick with team building

They really do. A lot Switch games went for a plastic style that's fine but not great, and meanwhile a lot of GC style went for more stylized bold colors and textures that aged gracefully. For instance when it comes to Mario Party, Superstar really doesn't look better than the GC games or even the 64 ones when it comes to the boards (someone might have that picture comparing the boards and showing how the lighting and colors are way weaker in the modern one, I don't have it atm)

Look at the first two Strikers games and then look at the recent game, it has a more "Mario" look to it.

I really did think at first that it was just a remake of superstar saga, but the fact its a new game really does mean that they listened to the fans that bought the smrpg remake and the thousand year door remake, and finally decided to make good mario rpg games again after all these years.
I will always love and enjoy paper mario, but if one of the two had to be the flagship series, I'm glad we get to have one at all.
So I guess this means the likely end of paper mario since "we only need one mario RPG series" according to Miyamoto.

I mean, I really doubt it. We saw a standard jump used early in the trailer, and the move where Luigi bumps Mario's Hammer with his own from behind looks way too complex to be considered the standard. At absolutee worst I think they might move them into the Jump and Hammer command blocks under a menu so the flashier item moves can still have their own block (as in, you select Jump or Hammer, and instead of automatically moving to enemy selection it drops down a menu to select which attack, ala Paper Mario).

Man, other than playing Bowser's inside story on my DS like a decade ago, haven't really experienced much of this franchise, would like to catch up before playing this one. What's the best way to go through it? Which releases/versions should I play of which? And is it worth dusting my 3DS/DS or should I emulate them?

Ok, I'll play the original version of superstar saga through emulation, but for the rest of them is it worth finding my DS or is PC emulation good? Have never emulated a DS game, I'd expect some weird things due to the format.
It works fine since the games aren't touchscreen heavy. Even the giant bowser fights are simple enough to do with a mouse.
Superstar Saga (GBA) is easily the most accessible and quality game in the series. Do not play the 3DS remake, it makes a lot of shameful changes to the aesthetic to make it look more like New Super Mario Bros.
Superstar Saga is a great game though, try emulating it, but definitely use a controller. I hope you enjoy!

I said BATTLE, persona 5 only takes one 3 minutes cutscene before taking you to the first battle, Pokemon SM (and SV) takes at the very least 15 minutes thanks to nauseating useless dialogue and hamfisted padding.

For instance when it comes to Mario Party, Superstar really doesn't look better than the GC games or even the 64 ones when it comes to the boards (someone might have that picture comparing the boards and showing how the lighting and colors are way weaker in the modern one, I don't have it atm)

There is such thing as lame fanservice. I had this reaction when I played Pikmin 4 and they just brought back the Waterwraith to do "the Submerged Castle except again with nothing new" the same as it was 20 years ago in Pikmin 2.
