    remakes suck
just let me play the original instead of spending $60 on a worse version of a game I've played 5 times already

It's alright, the gameplay additions make an already easy game even easier. The script keeps a surprising amount of the original Woolsley translation but there are still numerous line alterations. Most you won't notice but I've played the original dozens of times so they kinda bugged me. Some cutscenes play out a little different and the animation doesn't feels as "snappy" as it does in the original game.
The graphics are fine and I'm glad they kept the squat character designs but I prefer the original look overall.
Mostly though, this game just needs more. There's no new characters, no new moves outside of the triple techs. The only real additions are tougher random enemies and the post game super boss fights. It's just begging for some real post-game content. New dungeons and towns or something.
As it is, it's pretty straightforward remake but has less SOVL as they say.

      This
The game looks pretty great however and they kept the overall art style intact, it even looks prerendered
On the other hand, I hate how there's no hard mode but they bothered putting an easy mode in what is one of the easiest JRPGs out there. They could also easily have a menu to turn off the new stuff

        >looks pre-rendered
dude no it doesn't lol. It looks nothing like the original game's 90s render, limited frames aesthetic. People can't discern for shit. It looks like every polygonal Nintendo game from 6th gen up.

If you were there in the reveal threads, you were told that the original renders were crusty as shit and were unusable

I’m gonna wait for a big price drop. $60 for a game I’ve beaten a million times with a few new challenge bosses seems to steep. I’m excited to see new interest in Mario RPG and Paper Mario in its original form though, I’d love to get new games in the series.

Just emulate it. Play it now.

I’ll happily pirate anything not currently for retail (and I do), but I have a job at $60 is less than I make in an hour. It’s not a concern, and improves the chance of getting sequels to series that I like. I also want to encourage companies not making games as a service shit or endless pay to win garbage. I don’t think any less of people pirating though, god knows I did with the ps2, psp, ps3, Wii, and DS when they were still modern.
Also I’m busy with other games I’d rather play first, so waiting works out well.

it runs like shit on the Switch unfortunately, some cutscenes and areas have significant stutter and fps drops down to 40, at least when docked. Overall looks nice and plays the same as the original but something was lost with the new graphics. New soundtrack is generic sounding as well, but at least you have the option of using the original.
Hopefully they use the assets and tech to make a better sequel, the remake is pretty needless.

it's already down to $45 kinda shocking for a first party game

That usually means it’s not selling as well as expected, which is a shame.

The average moron spends probably double that price weekly on fast food, starbucks and food delivery. Not to mention cigarettes, booze, various streaming services they never even utilize most of and a whole lota child support.

                Anonymous

I agree, that’s why I don’t typical dine out, never order food, have no streaming services, don’t drink Starbucks, don’t smoke, and I’m not divorced. I have a house wife and a child too, so I can’t claim to not spend money on them. I do periodically buy booze though, so you’ve got me there, but I fill out my liquor cabinet and drink before going out, so that’s saves a bit since bars/etc are expensive. I’m not perfect, but saving $15 on a game here is never a bad idea.

Good man. I had to suffer living at parents for long, I don't drink, smoke, do drugs, don't go out, no GF and I'm getting close to buying a house while the prices are low on the market. I have a feeling it's now or I'll be outpriced forever in 5 years

I took one look at the new hud and knew it wasn't for me. Looks too generic

It's a yawn inducingly straight forward remake with less soulful "on brand" 3D models instead of the prerendered/stop motion-ish look. It does have some post-game harder versions of boss fights anyway, one of which is pretty notable. That's the only reason to play it unless you just wanna play SMRPG again with a new skin.

I honestly really like it, I think its an experience thats very well suited to playing handheld, especially on the OLED. Feels like you're holding a little Mario diorama. Wish the HUD wasn't so generic though. I thought the new models were really good and it had a lot of soul, old and new. One of the better remakes of recent memory imo.

It's a great game, I don't mind stuff like side enemies taking splash damage to be a bad thing. Just makes fights over in 2 turns instead of 3. Outside of the secret boss it was never a remotely challenging game to begin with.

I didn't like it too much at the start with its changes. Found it really funny they changed the one Toad girl asking to get hitched to Mario. The problem with the games difficulty is they added new mechanics that break the flow of the original. The post game fights make up for this though.

I enjoyed it more near the end of my playthrough. Its absolutely not a replacement for the original, but if you are a big nerd for the game, its fun playing through to see the changes, how they updated the environments, the new twists on mechanics.

I think the most minor additions i got a kick out of was an official name for the final area and the final Smithy fight background compared to the original being maybe some kind of Square multiverse nonsense implications.

Would love a sequel built off the new mechanics.

I just got peach, so idk how far i am but i know its a short game. Its not hard by any means, the story and music and graphics are all fine. The toad assists and trio moves are whatever, but i do like the animation of the trio moves. I think $60 is too high and i wish the original was unlockable but i can play it either way. Kinda hoping the rpg mario stuff gets more ports now, superstar saga could be awesome if it got an update.
