Master Duel is the full modern card game(but half a year behind on cards) and is extremely f2p friendly. Duel Links is a weird stripped down version of the card game and you need to spend money or months of grinding for it to be playable.
So less casualized more "proper" yugioh. Shame it uses modern cards, main reason I started playing duel links years ago was because it only had older cards without the convoluted pendulums and whatnot.
Stop letting Pendulums live rent free in your head, they haven't been meta in half a decade and barely exist outside of an occasional FTK that then gets nuked in the banlist.
Duel link decks are 20- 30 cards, their are 3 main monster/spell trap zones, starting hands are reduced by one, there's no main phase 2, the card pool is very limited, and most importantly there are ridiculous skills that konomi deliberately makes broken in order to favor what ever deck they're currently selling. Also duel links is expensive as frick because you can't craft cards.
Duel Links play the game with the Vrains play style: 3 monster and spell/trap fields, 4k LP, half the deck and each character as a skill that can pull what you need at that time. The only thing that ruins the game is how greedy everything is, you need to pull the cards from card counted boxes, and can't dismantle the cards you don't need, so in the end you have 40+ common shit you never use

I truly do wish that Dogchadika got Alba Zoa just a little bit sooner in every iteration of the game. He would have been such a fricking menace if he'd come just a year sooner. A 4k ED-immune tower would have been the most broken shit in DIFO (branded/swordsoul/floo/etc) format.
I get the feeling that if he had come out in DIFO he wouldn't have done anything of note outside of maybe being rogue, the meta then was Adventurer piles, Branded and Swordsoul. All of those are months away in terms of card design and POTE hitting just 3 months later filtered everything else
I could see them floating around low-to-mid tier 3 meta from that period. Zoa wasn't without checks since Branded has Branded Banishment and Albaz while Swordsoul had Blackout, Titaniklad could even deal with Zoa with the right materials. He would still be a nightmare to deal with if it's implied that he'd ship with Matrix at the same time.
Dogmatika can actually frick up Swordsoul pretty hard due to the fact they basically can't play if their ED plays get cut off
Adventure piles are just way better though and Branded fricking dumpsters Dogmatika cause they want their ED monsters in the grave anyway. So yeah I don't think things would have been all that different.

That being said DL gameplay is not that bad, it can be pretty back and forth and gives some time to shine for decks that never had spotlight in TCG, but its held back by bloated shitty events, grind, monetization and questionable character skill balance (some skills have as much text as endymion or some shit)
Don't forget Duel Links has premium boxes with meta-defining chase cards that you'll need to wait months for unless you shell out 150 for all three copies.
Grim, I like the skill system for the extra ANIMU flavor even if it can't get kinda powercreepy with the new skills having 300 pages long description. I was thinking of coming back for Romin and Luke but if it's still shit it's gonna be a hard pass for me.
Their adding rush duels tomorrow as a side format but the rush cards will be in the same boxes as the real cards. You'll have to sift through over a hundred bucks worth of digital cardboard for a deck.
I'm pretty sure rush duels will be a separate game mode. I don't think they work in the actual game.

That's how DL operates. You know how if in MD you wanted to build like, Inzektors or something, not even a tier 1 archetype, you can rely on just rolling on the Inzektor pack and maybe crafting the one or two out of archetype cards you need? In DL, there are three Inzektor cards in one box, two in another, one UR in a third, one of the first three in a random fourth box, and then all the out of archetype cards are placed in more random boxes. It's designed to be as miserable as possible.

I don't buy the notion that a "51% winrate" is all you need to reach Master 1. Every time you derank you are starting from the bottom of the previous rank, so you need to recoup a lot more wins to get back up. Losses are very punishing, especially if you've just ranked up, it only takes a few bad games to reset tour progress.
You can potentially hit Master 1 with a sub-50% winrate, because if you win once your entire loss streak is negated, but if you lose once, only one of your wins is negated. So it's possible to lose 2 win 1 a thousand times in a row then get 5 lucky wins in a row and rank up.
But if you won 2 and lost 1 a hundred times in a row then you'd be ranking up easily.

Been thinking about expanding into some classic cards like SOVR Kristya and GBI Secret Rare Obelisk.

Haven't seen them sold in over a decade in my town. I have a few cards from 2004, but dumb kid I was didn't realize the cheap packs from the convenience store were counterfeits.
Literally me, there was a place near my house that sold counterfeit YGO cards for very cheap and I'd buy packs there every week and use them to play with my friends, mixing them with my actual legit Joey SD. It was only until high school when I found a store that sold real cards and I began buying from them, I even got Envoy of the Beginning and End one pack after the other before my binder got stolen.
Might as well, these are the only "rare" cards that I have left back when I stopped playing in 2004, after my binder got stolen and I moved to another city. I bought the Command Knight tin but I stopped playing shortly after. I don't really remember how those Silent Magician and Swordsman ended in my hands, especially the latter which I believe, from what I researched, is an Ultimate Rare.

I mean having to pay to the Dragonmaid creator. I knew that the archetype was inspired on Kobayashi's Dragonmaid, but not the point that Konami would have to pay to give the archetype more support.
The TCG is a fricking joke though. So is the OCG for that matter. The meta in MD, despite being a few sets behind paper, is far more evolved than those clown formats.

it's banned because it's change of heart except permanent, and change of heart is strong enough to have been banned or on the limited list for like 20 years
They get the monster back if it leaves the field. Comic Hand works the same way. It's banned because it used to be overpowered. It's maybe a bit overpowered now. Hidden Armory means that if you don't need your normal summon then you can have 4 copies of it even if it's limited. Also Change of Heart sees some play and this is just Change of Heart that doesn't need you to link off the opponent's boss monster to prevent them from getting it back.
I think it's probably alright to come back but people are afraid of it because it was unbanned in 2015 and was OP back then.
Makes me wonder how stronger would Mikanko be with Snatch Steal, considering the deck already has Reflecting Rondo which even if it does negate effects, it sends the stolen monster to the GY when the equip leaves the field.
Probably not much. Rondo is more searchable by the deck, and it's not like you use it every game. If you draw it, then yeah you can force Baronne to use her negate, but that's the same as anything like Forbidden Chalice. I guess it's nice for Rivalry but like you said Rondo exists, and so does Axe of Fools. Would you really want to run more going first options?
People lie and misrepresent their deck's success rates in Master routinely. There's not a fool-proof way to verify if someone actually made master with a deck or not.

Ultra Athletes have always intrigued me. How they play is fun and evocative, I enjoy how they give a middle finger to using an extra deck without being gay about it like Monarchs, and while it isn't really a good deck, taking them online in Master Duel feels like you can get some wins if you play their precious few negates and swap-outs at the right time.
It's a shame how it feels limited by intentionally bad support, like Rebounder being locked behind a Midfielder/Libero Spiker effect, Penalty Box being a HOPT battle trap on the field and needing to get it off the field for its useful second effect, and whatever the frick you'd call Turnover Tactics.
But saying they're my favorite is influenced by moronic puppy syndrome. They're a pet deck like a pug. Quantifiably, my real favorite is definitely Plunder Patroll >fantastic art >fantastic art concept >fun effects >doesn't really rely on generic toolbox Extra Deck >interesting to pilot >actually playable >gets support + support is super easy to add (new attribute ships being vanilla beaters would still be really good)

I get the feeling that if he had come out in DIFO he wouldn't have done anything of note outside of maybe being rogue, the meta then was Adventurer piles, Branded and Swordsoul. All of those are months away in terms of card design and POTE hitting just 3 months later filtered everything else
I could see them floating around low-to-mid tier 3 meta from that period. Zoa wasn't without checks since Branded has Branded Banishment and Albaz while Swordsoul had Blackout, Titaniklad could even deal with Zoa with the right materials. He would still be a nightmare to deal with if it's implied that he'd ship with Matrix at the same time.
Dogmatika can actually frick up Swordsoul pretty hard due to the fact they basically can't play if their ED plays get cut off
Adventure piles are just way better though and Branded fricking dumpsters Dogmatika cause they want their ED monsters in the grave anyway. So yeah I don't think things would have been all that different.

That's how DL operates. You know how if in MD you wanted to build like, Inzektors or something, not even a tier 1 archetype, you can rely on just rolling on the Inzektor pack and maybe crafting the one or two out of archetype cards you need? In DL, there are three Inzektor cards in one box, two in another, one UR in a third, one of the first three in a random fourth box, and then all the out of archetype cards are placed in more random boxes. It's designed to be as miserable as possible.

I don't buy the notion that a "51% winrate" is all you need to reach Master 1. Every time you derank you are starting from the bottom of the previous rank, so you need to recoup a lot more wins to get back up. Losses are very punishing, especially if you've just ranked up, it only takes a few bad games to reset tour progress.
You can potentially hit Master 1 with a sub-50% winrate, because if you win once your entire loss streak is negated, but if you lose once, only one of your wins is negated. So it's possible to lose 2 win 1 a thousand times in a row then get 5 lucky wins in a row and rank up.
But if you won 2 and lost 1 a hundred times in a row then you'd be ranking up easily.

it's banned because it's change of heart except permanent, and change of heart is strong enough to have been banned or on the limited list for like 20 years
They get the monster back if it leaves the field. Comic Hand works the same way. It's banned because it used to be overpowered. It's maybe a bit overpowered now. Hidden Armory means that if you don't need your normal summon then you can have 4 copies of it even if it's limited. Also Change of Heart sees some play and this is just Change of Heart that doesn't need you to link off the opponent's boss monster to prevent them from getting it back.
I think it's probably alright to come back but people are afraid of it because it was unbanned in 2015 and was OP back then.

Probably not much. Rondo is more searchable by the deck, and it's not like you use it every game. If you draw it, then yeah you can force Baronne to use her negate, but that's the same as anything like Forbidden Chalice. I guess it's nice for Rivalry but like you said Rondo exists, and so does Axe of Fools. Would you really want to run more going first options?

Ultra Athletes have always intrigued me. How they play is fun and evocative, I enjoy how they give a middle finger to using an extra deck without being gay about it like Monarchs, and while it isn't really a good deck, taking them online in Master Duel feels like you can get some wins if you play their precious few negates and swap-outs at the right time.
It's a shame how it feels limited by intentionally bad support, like Rebounder being locked behind a Midfielder/Libero Spiker effect, Penalty Box being a HOPT battle trap on the field and needing to get it off the field for its useful second effect, and whatever the frick you'd call Turnover Tactics.
But saying they're my favorite is influenced by moronic puppy syndrome. They're a pet deck like a pug. Quantifiably, my real favorite is definitely Plunder Patroll
