Is master of orion 2 retro?
Didn't see a thread up and I wanted to talk about something that's been bugging my brain. Are MIRV missile the standard way to play or is it tryhard?

It's the most effective ship to start with. Nothing tryhard about using the game's mechanics.
When I played it as a kid I never even knew about MIRV missiles, let alone figuring out how to even research it. I thought you had it research it or something.
I may have been just moronic as a kid. Did you find out about MIRV missiles naturally? I only found out about them years later.
>Did you find out about MIRV missiles naturally
Sure. I played the game a lot back in the day and read the manual.
Oh I didn't read the manual back then. That explains a lot.
tech tree is very unbalanced
What do you mean? Like the choices to pick which tech or like picking the actually tech tree like chemistry vs...physics or whatever.
There were supposedly more counterplays than you'd first assume
Biggest issue with the game is that the same system colony population growth trick nukes all their economy play testing
*The trick being that building housing in size 1 colonies produces another population very fast to help reduce colony spin up time, but you can just move that second population for free between colonies in the same solar system. So if you build a colony base on a huge barren and buy it an automated factory it will spawn another population point like 2 out of 3 turns building housing, which you can move to a fully developed planet to fill it out 60 turns earlier than intended
This is not a problem unless you simply dislike the micromanagement. Most of the balance ”problems” of the game lie in the racial traits.
I'm the colonist breeding like a rabbit.
It came out when? 1995? It’s retro. I’m still playing it but with the 1.50+ version mod.
Is there any reason to prefer the first game or is Master of Orion 2 completely better?
they're different
2 gets a lot more micromanagement: colonies, individual ships instead of stacks, leaders, etc.
Very different styles of 4x. Moo1 is a lot more unique in design, moo2 is more kitchen sink
MOO2 is completely better imo. The first game is fun, but it’s like the beta version of an idea that came out fully formed in 2. Theres a reason all of the sequels, remakes, reimaginings, etc have failed to live up to 2. It’s just a landmark in turn-based strategy and 4X.
Just the fact that moo1 doesn't try to do the conventional civilization city build screen almost every 4x does (which always creates a punishing amount of micromanagement) makes it an alternative game
ironically I think the third game tried to return to it being a macromanagement game, but I guess it went too far.
What's MoO3 like?
Severely unfinished mess.
>MOO3
It’s horrible, don’t waste your time or your money on that shit. I asked and received it for Christmas the year it was released and came away sorely disappointed after loving 1 and especially 2 for years. The game is unfinished, buggy, and prevents you from actually controlling much of anything, while overriding actions you do take. Horribly frustrating interface. I have no clue what the devs were thinking when they were making the game. I think steam was trying to give it away for free in a MOO bundle years ago, that’s how bad it is, even steam considers it wasted space to store the thing.
>but it’s like the beta version of an idea
which itself actually came out from another game you can call "beta version"
The first game is the most elegant pc strategy game ever made. It’s a complete package that doesn’t lack anything and everything has a purpose. It’s far from being a ”beta” of anything. Moo2 has very little to do with moo1’s gameplay and added a world of micromanagement that was not needed.
I vastly prefer 1 over 2 although I still find 2 fun. They're very different games. The dynamic tech availability of 1 is its killer feature and I'm sad they went with a static tech tree in 2.
>dynamic tech tree
Ok, I yield on that. Tech tree feature in 1 is a really good aspect of that game and it was a shame something like it wasn’t in 2, despite 2’s numerous improvements.
based moo enjoyers
Speaking of, anyone else reading Outsiders?
Is this the right place to ask? I'm genuinely looking for some advice on a review I wrote for MOO2. I need feedback on both the contents and video quality as well. I'd really appreciate it if I could get some tips on how I can do better. Thanks.
You probably want to ask audio and editing people more than people that just play moo2.
Wow audio sucks you should get a new mic. I thought the video was alright and started to kind of remind me of szeth. I see what you're going for and it's not bad, but sometimes you go too deep into a topic and some are too little. Like, it's not really a review anymore and more of a tutorial.
I noticed it's your first one so it's forgivable I guess.
