The game is all artistic and musical talent, and zero programmatical and writer talent. It's just not fun and the story is so shit it gives you no reason to continue, no amount of pretty pixels and uptune beats will change that.
I wouldn't call It ugly. It feels very uninspired, like they based their entire style on how-to (pixel art) youtube videos, but I'd say it's probably the prettiest part because any time it escapes into anything that looks unique (their style) like character designs than it's ugly fake anime tumblr shit.
>like they based their entire style on how-to (pixel art) youtube videos
This was in 1998. Pixel-style art was considered out-of-date and everyone thought detailed polygonal character models were the future (like in FF8). It was a pretty ballsy choice given what the trends were at the time. I disagree that it looks uninspired, though. I think the character designs are pretty well done and look better than a lot of the pixel art indie garbage you see today.
I was talking about Sea of Stars than another anon posted, it was a massively hyped up indie game that was pretty much memory holed upon release because it was shit. Gears was okay for it's time considering it was never a high budget release trying to wow people, it was never going to hit the casual audiences so going for graphics would've been just moronic.

Ah, my mistake. Good point about the target audience, too. You're right. The game was never going to have mass appeal. I'm actually surprised a game with the type of story in Xenogears got greenlit in the first place, especially after the success of FF7. You would think Square would have immediately wanted to do a FF7 spinoff to capitalize on its success, rather than put any amount of money into an IP that was likely to be one and done.

xenogears actually started as an FF7 pitch that was rejected but greenlight to be it's own thing and a potential sequel to Chrono before that was scrapped too, it was really just a runaway project that they kept funding. Square was always like that and still is, they are a multiple eggs multiple basket style of business that has led them to release some really shit eggs and dip their hands into some really shitty baskets. Also gears looked good for it's time, things moved a lot slower back then and people were still impressed by just any 3D, people were still creaming about sm64 being "realistic" back then.

That actually makes a lot of sense. I never knew that.
Something about the Sea of Stars artstyle really turns me off. I think it’s the fake pseudo anime look instead of committing to getting an anime artist or just going full western.
Xenogears is pretty disappointing.
The gameplay itself is pretty dog shit, only because it's one of the easiest JRPGs on the system. All the on foot battles are a absolute joke and you barely need to engage in half the systems in the game because simple combos and 1 party member make it a breeze. The story itself seems cool on paper but outside a few spots of execution I think it's a little weak. It's certainly a very unique game and I'm glad it spawned a series elsewhere, but I'd play Saga or Blade over it any day.

that literally also applies to both xenosaga and xenoblade
>mech combat pretty simple >bad random encounters >story spends entire first disc teasing >second disc is info dumb in the very first few seconds >payoff SUCKS >music pretty good >environments largely forgettable
i can see the vision, but the end result is still not really enjoyable. i also found it laughable how in the second disc they just start using super advanced vocabulary that feels extremely out of place and confusing to follow. it's like kojima on crack, why they thought that was a good idea i'll never know
Why were zoomers hyping up this game now? Is it just another case of "zoomer discovers old thing and deems it the greatest thing ever solely for le cool kids points"?
>Hey YouTubers, its GENZoomerGamer2010 here and today we're gonna spend an hour talking about an obscure little game from JAPAN (obnoxiously large map of Japan falls onto screen) called XENOGEARS (cover art spins spastically all over the screen). It all starts here when......
I suspect they got this impression from something like this.
I think they were going for something that made the player feel more involved than the Active Time Battle system. I liked the combat system as well but found it could feel repetitive at times.
I like it in theory, but I think it would've been better if it required proper timing in addition to just inputting the correct sequence. Maybe it would've been too frustrating, but if executed correctly it would be more engaging than just pressing the buttons in the right order to do each character's combos.
How do I get into literature? Like I want more character focused stuff like anime but everytime I get into a book it's just either incomplete, really dumb, and/or preachy. Classics are nice I guess but they don't have flair. Finding a good book to read feels like a needle in a haystack.
And idk, I feel like japanese pop literature can get a little dumb. Maybe it's the translation but I've recently read the Ring Trilogy and it was just >Ring
kinda dry >Spiral
Interesting but a shit ton of infodumping and not much happens >Loop
Interesting but a shit ton of infodumping and not much happens. Also had one edgy moment in the novel I was kinda like....why? why the frick? this is just edgy for the sake of being edgy.
For what it's worth, all three protagonists had kids. Fei and Elly never got that far. Even Kim and Zeboim Elly were a bunch of sterile, inbred losers and had to resort to genetic engineering.
>The concept of a personality that can take over and override any being (of a specific gender) at any time is really unique and cool
It might have been considered unique and cool before leftist governments and schools started doing it to make people develop gender dysphoria as well as developing a culture of groomers which affect kids sexual orientations
I agree. This is just Reddit: The JRPG
Makes sense that people who don't like Xenogears also rely on buzzwords.
>Buzzword has become a buzzword now
How ironic.
>admitting he is much dumber than Redditors
LOL
Triple Meh and ewww

The pixel art is not good

soulless

It's not really meh, it's downright awful. Some of the worst gameplay I ever had the displeasure of experiencing in a JRPG.
I agree Chained Echoes sucks
Ok homo.
Undertale is even worse

ah well
Sea of Stars is gay and moronic lol westerners not even once kek
If you think about it Stardew Valley is for homosexuals that can't play a real harvest moon really ugly gay characters and art and janky controls
Fortnite lack of originality and soulless art really sucks shit people that play that shit have no taste
Yeh
Why were zoomers hyping up this game now? Is it just another case of "zoomer discovers old thing and deems it the greatest thing ever solely for le cool kids points"?
I'm still pissed that zoomers discovered this game in the first place. Why can't all my obscure vidya stay obscure forever?
>square
>not even jap exclusive
>obscure
lol

I pity you.
The Xenoblade franchise is unironically better, even if it did fall into becoming booba slop.
wow anon. whats next. will you claim cross is putrid shit?!?!?!
homosexual
Maybe by today's standards, but it was a pretty bold game when it came out. Still have my original copy.
Check out the games being promoted on the back of the instruction booklet

The Square you know is long gone.
No kidding. Three titles and each are from completely different genres.
square hasn't made a relevant game since kingdom hearts 2 at best. it's been like 20+ years
the story is good but the gameplay is complete dogshit in every way, should have just been a vn or an anime
I very much enjoy the combo input battle system. I didn't particularly care for the story.

Where are sex scenes in Xenoblade?

I bought a sealed Japanese copy last year
I can never open it
xenosaga is better
Is Baroque good?
