While I adore the old heroic proportions, I love the new more anatomical look as well. My only thing is the helmet looks a little bit off. Not like a redesign, but an imperfect recreation you'd see in a fan game. Very excited Prime is back regardless, and I'll get used to the new look I'm sure.

It does look like they were trying to make Samus look like an actual person wearing a suit rather than whatever the frick was up with her proportions in the original Prime.

I'm really digging that the suit is more form-fitting. It looks feminine, without being too overt about it. I feel like this might be a general design ethic going forward, because Dread also goes for a sleeker look with smaller shoulder pads.

        Anonymous

I don't think the shoulder pads are much smaller than they were here in 3 either to be honest (Prime 1/Supers are huuuge). I think the main difference in this one is the chest/waist/hip proportions.

She's less "corset" bodied, and the general larger more realistic torso makes her legs/shoulders etc look smaller in comparison.

the red upper 'glacis' of the armor being a lot shorter also changes how the helmet looks a lot. like, ignoring all the rest of the proportional differences, you can see how the framing draws attention to the neck, the shape of the helmet is made to sit in that space formed and not stick out on its own.

I know it's a retcon that takes a big shit on Super (But so did Other M so eh) but basically in Federation Force (Set before Super) Shitlux steals some Metroids eggs the Federation had picked up on a mission before they decided the metroid species was too dangerous to exist. So there's the possibility that Sylux simply led the federation/chozo to believe the baby was the real last Metroid so they could sell his/hers to the now desperate Pirate remnants to clone for an insanely high price. Like artificial scarcity or something.

            Just a theory though

Only all the wild ones died. The space pirates had a bunch when they crashed on Zebes in Prime 1, they also brought a bunch to Aether in Prime 2, and the original ones are cloned by federation from TEH BABEH'S dna afterwards.

I think I preferred the big tank look that Samus had in the other prime games. Really felt like she was in a chozo power suit made for war. I get they had to tone down the proportions to make them realistic but it just looks really off. Prime 2's varia suit was the best suit in the entire series and this is blatantly a downgrade from it but I can't really complain too much. Hard to improve on perfection. I just wish her shoulders were bigger, they seem a bit too small. My least favorite part of it is definitely the helmet though.

True, but it's also shown to drastically increase the power of whatever becomes corrupted by it, which could be addictive in a certain sense. Also, having this sentient blue goo in your system probably fricks with your brain function, making it hard to resist doing what the blue goo wants you to do.
Don't forget that Samus literally turns into Dark Samus if she dies by corruption, so there's definitely something to be said for Phazon corrupting the user's mind/

I genuinely don't understand what anyone was expecting if not another one. People need to stop pretending that "innovation" is automatically a good thing. Just look at Sonic, and how Sonic Team fricked itself by refusing to just iterate on a functional formula. Take hat works and refine it.

          >This is a positive anon. My worst fear is that they bank more on cutscenes like in Prime 3.
Prime 3's cutscenes were short and to the point. I have no doubt Beyond will play it the same. Don't worry about it.

The worst version of metroid is back. Time to play Metroid-for-Plebs, Bootleg Metroid, some kind of Downgrade V2.Bad. Like those Gameboy versions of console games remember those? That type. It's really the level these Primes are operating on.

To love gameplay, you should be willing to hate everything else. If you're watching a cutscene, then you're objectively not playing the game. Why wouldn't you hate that which is taking you away from the gameplay?

Same reason why I hate any bit of Zero Suit Samus.Whenever that dumb b***h is on screen, the game is being ruined. So what reason is there to tolerate such a cancer?

This was the silliest moment of the trailer. No Metroid larvae would just casually stroll behind someone like that, especially test tube Metroids that didn't imprint from hatching. Mother Brain in Other M is able to control metroids somehow. Probably related to both being Chozo creations. So it could be something like that. Some Chozo tech or Mother Brain clone or whatever.

          Anonymous

Well as the other anon pointed out they are likely Mochtroids so it makes the entire behavior make way more sense.

But if they are regular Metroids then the only explanation is some sort of them being controlled similar to Mother Brain.

          >Heh... guys, I know nothing about the new plot. But I'm going to tell you right now... That's impossible.

          Shut up, c**t.

Yes, I know Metroid plots, and I know that Metroids are a very aggressive species that attack anything that moves and have no real allegiances, hence why outbreaks of them are so disastrous and why Space Pirates say they aren't pets. There are very few moments where Metroid larvae are shown that chill, so of course I'm going to call it into question as just them wanting the shot to look cool.

It's so easy to make up a new law to get around that. Just say that Sylux figured out a pheromone that makes a Metroid bond to him as if he were their mother. Boom. That easy.

I think it's less of a choice, more so that after Super Metroid the story plummets towards the events of fusion to dread. Those are totally Samus changing events, so it only makes sense to make games and expand the lore of pirates and the universe before Metroid 2 and Super, before most pirates and all Metroid are eradicated.

                Anonymous

Well whatever, they can still introduce a plot device, and then remove it later. If Sylux hates the Federation so much, they they can say he destroyed his research so as to avoid it falling into the hands of the federation.

              Anonymous

Possible, but until a new story angle like that is confirmed and recontextualizes it, as things stands it looks kind of silly to see creatures you know jump at everything that moves just casually stroll behind Sylux because he's Cool™ and Badass™. Don't get me wrong, it makes for a cool visual, but it was just amusing to me especially when you've played the other games

I've already conceded that the anon pointing out they are Mochtroids is probably right and such my entire complaint was null. I hope it isn't just that they were trained well since the Pirates had a difficult time trying to train them during the whole Prime saga.

You guys are overthinking a gameplay contrivance and tendency to use an iconic appearance for the sake of consistency. Metroid would lose half of its identity if you started every single game with all of your upgrades, a full bank of missile tanks and energy tanks.

You got filtered. You don't need to farm ammo unless you're about to fight a boss. No normal enemy was so hard that you needed a ton of ammo to kill it (and by then, you have Power Bombs).

They didn't deal with them in Other M, because the exact same group comes back in Fusion and tries to breed bioweapons AGAIN, and incase you need a reminder, what do you think the EMMIs were for? They were designed to extract DNA, and they were sent to the planet in Dread, the moment they found possible evidence of X infestation. What a coincidence that they can also extract metroid DNA from Samus, and are conveniently immune to all of her weapons.

Sure is a coincidence how Exelion was able to make a weapon like this, that perfectly benefits the GF's desire to collect bioweapons to use.

The feds deal with the pirates just fine or else no one would trust them and the whole system would fall apart. they literally struggled to fight the pirates in Prime 3, and couldn't even begin to assault their homeworld. The games quite clearly show that Samus isn't just their heavy hitter, she's carrying the whole operation.

                >Also, you ignore the fact that Raven Beak wiped the floor with an EMMI,
It's been 3 years, do we actually see him fight an Emmi? All I remember was him catching the Emmis offguard by hacking them, and I attributed that to Quiet Robe, since it's super easy for him to disable the Emmi that tried to attack Samus.

I can indeed explain this actually. So get this, there was an ancient roleplaying ARG published in Nintendo Power called Blood of the Chozo. Long story short, one of the many, many characters made up for it was Solomon Aran, Samus' long lost brother, who had also survived the K-2L massacre. Ever since, the idea of Samus having a secret sibling has been a semi-popular idea in the fan circles. And here we have this mysterious character who happens to have a grudge against Samus and the Federation... Well, you can connect the dots there.

I still think it's a dumb theory, but I see where it's coming from.

You'll have an easier time using the Prime Trilogy Wii ISO, which has mods to restore the scans and lore to their originals, since people dislike the changes the Wii Trilogy did to the lore.

How do we feel about elevators? Not in between sections in the same area to make some verticality, but between major areas of the map. Would you rather have every area be connected through rooms instead of elevators, or do you think it's a series tradition at this point?

      Anonymous

Elevators being the primary connection point with secret non-elevator paths between them, at least for the 2D games. Don't think that works with Prime

      Anonymous

They should honestly be skippable. Super Metroid didn't force you to take elevators every time you wanted to move to a different portion of the world. Like, for example, if you were skilled enough, you'd never even see the elevator from Crateria to Maridia. You could just go right to the glass tube in Brinstar and skip it.

        Anonymous

It's a loading zone you dummy. And even in prime some doors would take longer to open because it's LOADING.

          Anonymous

And that was a problem for games in 2001, but the switch should be stronger than a gamecube.

      Anonymous

Elevators are absolutely a tradition that needs to stay. I know they're loading screens, but they convey forward momentum and add to the atmosphere. They are part of the fun as far as I'm concerned.

        Anonymous

Elevators also give you a brief moment of respite to catch your breath, collect your thoughts, and formulate a plan for the next area.
People vastly underestimate those small moments of reprieve.

          Anonymous

Exactly. A game where you go go go at every possible moment gets exhausting, and that's especially problematic in a metroidvania where you're always thinking about where to go next and what your next objective is. Giving your brain a break for a few seconds is vital.

      Anonymous

Elevators didn't stick around merely for tradition. They stuck around because they disguise loading zones. Now, understandably, many other games have eliminated loading zones. Or so it may seem. They still devise clever choke points that the player has to traverse, in order to deload one zone and load another. That's why so many games have those lame segments where your character squeezes through a tight space. It's to disguise loading while you perform the inane action with limited visibility.

Elevators also help maintain the scale of the world. You want to feel like you're traveling far from one biome to another. It helps to create the sensation that you're actually moving in space while the game loads. And hell, if you're game world is constructed well enough, then you're not only getting the sensation of moving through space, you actually ARE moving through space. The world being entirely consistent.

So basically, Elevators should be used where it makes sense. They don't need to force it for sake of tradition. Just make an interesting world. And inevitably, you will need to create a vertical shaft to move the player up and down. It will come naturally.

        Anonymous

Well said. And hell, as Fusion memorably showed, elevators can even be part of the plot.

I liked elevators in the prime games, it was nice downtime kinda. Though I do feel like they should save them for areas where they would actually work instead of just being "omfg i have to go through 3 elevators to get to where I need to go."

He's a nice callback to a lesser known game while not being kingdom hearts tier "you need to play 500 games to know what the frick his motivations are". Dark Samus wanted phazon, Ridley is a space pirate big bad who killed her parents, Sylux despises the federation.

Meanwhile, it legitimately feels like you can't criticize anything about Metroid, or the new trailer, without people spamming porn to drown it out. If this isn't true, then please, tell me a list of criticisms that you would consider valid.

Agreed. I know they wanted to play it safe with the trailer, but they really needed to show more. We're almost going on a decade since the initial title reveal.

They were excited to show off their original xbox tier scripted sequence where a thing explodes in the skybox. I think this caused some fat black guy to faint at the new york nintendo store. The trailer was a poor showing and fans should want to see something new.

troony comment aside, the rest of your comments seem pretty valid. I don't mind the graphics personally, but since they're obviously not aiming for hyper realism, the game should have very little loading and should run at a crisp 60 FPS. I gladly sacrifice graphics for performance. Certainly metroid fans would agree with that?

Depends, does it make me a snoy if I'm worried about the Bros attacks being too long and repetitious, instead of being quick and snappy like the first game? The latest M&L games really went too far with the bros attacks being giant minigames, instead of just being quick bursts of extra damage. Hurts even more when you need to do them multiple times in a battle to do any meaningful damage.

From another viewpoint say I'm worried that Prime 4 might be linear like Fusion and other M. And that upgrades will be tied to authorization like in other M. Prime 4 could be good but if it has all of that it could suck really bad. With the limited information it effectively doom-posting.

But that is all over the fricking place in Prime?

Yeah that's the confusing bit. But what else could that anon be on about ya know.

There are also standard dirt blocks that are destroyed by the standard power beam. They were in Metroid 1 as well. The very first installment of the game has destructible terrain.

You could just shoot the blocks normally, and they break away. No missiles. No bombs. In fact, it's one of the very first things they teach you in Super Metroid. You guys really are gamecube zoomers. I said that thinking I shouldn't make such assumptions. But wow, you really don't know how Metroid is supposed to be designed.

It's even more fun when you get the wave beam, because that allows you to break multiple blocks at the same time. It was cool to fire through a wall, and watch all the blocks break away in the path of your beam.

                Anonymous

Those are just blocks dude. Cool your jets. Dread already does this way better by being actual environment.

                Anonymous

No, Dread still relies on blocks. Except they don't have standard terrain blocks. Dread installs some object in the wall, where when you shoot them, they break a specific portion of terrain away. This object primarily functions as the "this door doesn't open from this side" mechanic. So it's not a real terrain breaking mechanic.

Sounds like you only like 1 or 2 games. Not Metroid at all.

Metroid Zero Mission was even more non-linear than the previous games, and it too has standard terrain blocks. One of the first instances in Zero Mission, is a tunnel that you can't access, because you can't shoot far enough inside to clear it. So you need the long beam to get through.

It's a FRICKING METROID PRIME GAME.
IT'S GOING TO BE LIKE METROID PRIME.

        >go fricking play dread
Dread actually lacks everything I like about 2D Metroid.
In Dread there are no terrain breaking tiles. They only have item specific tiles.
In Dread there's little to no aerial movement, because the gravity is too heavy.
In Dread there's very little non-linear options.
In Dread there are fricking stealth segments(lol, seriously?)
In Dread the battles all have QTEs
What am I getting as a Metroid fan? The 2D games don't resemble Metroid. And the 3D games don't resemble Metroid.

But I'm about 95% certain that the game doesn't have standard breakable tiles.

And then when you get called a snoy or ACgay you're going to complain that Metroid fans can't take criticism. Your first point is false. Dread is filled with blocks that die to beam. It's even a hint they give you that if you're lost shoot everything in the room.

No, I'm pretty sure that shooting at everything in the room, REVEALS the nature of the tile. You shot to reveal whether it's a bomb tile or a missile tile. And then you use the required item to break them.

            >And then when you get called a snoy or ACgay
You would just be wrong. It would be an empty adhominem. I'm not ACgay, and I don't even own a Sony console. I haven't owned a sony console since the PS3. Which was pretty much my Demon's Souls machine before the laser sensor died.

                >There are blocks that die to beam in Dread. Just try. Just try. This isn't even trolling. Just put in a bit more effort.
Alright, alright! My bad. I didn't feel like booting the game up. But I looked at a video, and you're right. There are titles that break from a shot. I was wrong about that. But I still contend that they're used much less frequently than in previous Metroid games. In previous games, there would be whole hallways full up of breakable terrain. Do you remember that secret that's in the beginning of Super Metroid, where you have to run and powerboost into? The whole wall would give way.
Or that shortcut back to the first zone from the left side of the morph ball. That whole wall would break away. Or in the abandoned ship, nearly the whole floor and ceiling would break away when you shot into it. Or at the end of the game, when you're in the baby metroid's feeding ground. Everything is all barren and dusty. The dusty vines would all break away. Or that spot in the red area, you could just shoot the floor away. It was not bomb required.
Or that one bizarre room, where you have to wait for the machines to dig a tunnel through the dirt.

In previous games, those blocks could appear like cracky terrain to make them obvious, but then in other situations, they were disguised as normal terrain. So you didn't know they were breakable until you shot them. I'm looking at the Dread footage, and all of the breakable blocks are marked with large white lights in the center. They're not even trying to appear like terrain. Or blend in with the environment. And they're used sparingly.

Clearly, Metroid was designed with terrain destruction in mind. And as it exists today, it's a pale imitation of what it used to be. Metroid Design is going backwards, not forwards The series is regressing to a less dynamic, increasingly linear state.

I'm not ACgay. I'm aware of his tactics. He doesn't play the games he criticizes. He just gets into arguments, and then adapts as he learns from the people he's arguing with. So I don't blame you for making that judgement against me. Just know that you're wrong.
Truth is, I emulated the game. But that was on an older machine. And I don't feel like booting up my old machine just to make a point. The thread is dying now, so I don't even have time if I wanted.

              >But I'm about 95% certain that the game doesn't have standard breakable tiles.
Well you're entirely wrong, those were generic breakables, Dread had plenty even if it did use the "one-way" exploding blocks as well. Not to be all "um ackchually" because there are plenty of valid criticisms and complaints with Dread, but this is an obscure thing to be upset AND wrong about.

And then when you get called a snoy or ACgay you're going to complain that Metroid fans can't take criticism. Your first point is false. Dread is filled with blocks that die to beam. It's even a hint they give you that if you're lost shoot everything in the room.

Ignore him, he doesn't even like Metroid, he just likes hitting blocks.

It's not even about whether he likes metroid or not. Guy hasn't even played a hour of Dread. The guy didn't even look up a playthrough. He actually went into a metroid thread to critique about a game he's never played.

And i'm pretty sure it's the same guy that shits up every thread. He's been doing this for how long. How many threads. And he can't even put in the effort to not just make shit up. He can't put in a little bit more effort. Trolling takes more effort than that.

                >David Jaffe?
That's the guy who couldn't find the titles to break right? I'm pretty sure those were missile tiles. I could be wrong. Because I only played the game about 1 and a half times, and I wasn't very impressed by anything.(It wasn't a bad game, just didn't hook me like it did others)

                [...]

So yeah, if you begin throwing empty insults at me, then I'll accuse you of being a gigantic baby b***h boy. You're not a gigantic baby b***h boy, are you?

And how dare you think that you represent the Metroid fanbase. You don't represent me.

There are blocks that die to beam in Dread. Just try. Just try. This isn't even trolling. Just put in a bit more effort.

          >And the 3D games don't resemble Metroid.
Keep crying about it. I like Prime for what it is, not what some moronic boomer who was a virgin when he was playing the first metroid and is still a virgin now think it should be. The 3D games aren't the 2D games and the 2D games aren't the 3D games and that's okay.

ACgay tou can troll so much better than this. You had a good leg. The destructible terrain. Beam Blocks aren't really destructible terrain they regenerate. In other games destructible terrain is permanent or alteast doesn't respawn instantly. That should be the angle you troll with. Using the term incorrectly. Instead of just claiming a thing that is in the game isn't in the game.

Or this weird destroying a block with a beam and destroying a block with a missile or bomb are totally different direction. You could actually be funny. You don't have to go for awful reaches and be routinely wrong.

Everything in this as well as the remaster of Prime 1 looks more stylized than I expected (even with the Switch's power in mind)
Was the Prime series never meant to have as realistic as possible graphics?

I like how you're trying to judo the argument in your favor. When earlier, you guys didn't even know Metroid 1 and Super has destructable terrain until I told you.

Acgay you've said some dumb fricking shit but this ranks as some of the most moronic shit you've ever said ever.

You guys quite literally said you didn't know what I was talking about.

        >Things that never happened

i think that anon means the destructible blocks. There are blocks that die to bombs or missiles or super missiles. That kind of thing.

But that is all over the fricking place in Prime?

Yeah that's the confusing bit. But what else could that anon be on about ya know.

In other words you didn't know what you were talking about and used 2d Metroid to argue 3d Metroid game design.

Plenty of people evade bans true but extreme shitposters always eventually get the range and permabans thrown at them eventually. It's been over 10 fricking years and not a single mod finally said "enough" ? Yeah I think he knows someone

Who? Where? You guys called me ACgay, when I'm not even him. Are you referring to me, and my terrain argument? If so, how is that "meta"? What's wrong with discussing where the series began and where the series should go? I think that's right and proper discussion for any video game thread. Why do you want mods to intervene? Just because you don't like my opinion on whether or not Metroid should have destructable terrain and non-linear progression?
