Kinda pathetic that the genre has yet to surpass Super Metroid and SOTN; games that came out when I was still in highschool. La Mulana comes close I suppose.

      Anonymous

I think the genre has a low ceiling. There doesn't seem to be anything you can do with this format (especially 2D metroidvanias) that hasn't already been done. Start low, explore till you get double jump, the map opens up and then it's just a countdown till you beat the game.
For real, what could they possibly do with these games that hasn't been done before?

        Anonymous

I think one mark of a great MV is when it encourages the player to creatively “sequence break,” which is a difficult thing to design with a reasonably big map / ability set. Super Metroid did this in simple but effective ways, which helps its staying power. La Mulana and similar do this like “if you’re smart enough, you can go your own way” (or at least suggesting it). I think there’s a lot more that could be done here, but it requires very careful design.

All the MVs that are rote “get double jump to unlock this part on your map” - locks and keys - are honestly slop and you should try to avoid wasting time on them.

I'm the anon you're responding to, but Hollow Knight has a surprisingly open map once you realize you can use your attack to bounce off of spikes.

NTA, but Super Metroid essentially never requires a walljump outside of the walljump tutorial pit. There's numerous items and areas that are nominally gated by high jump or having infinite midair jumps, but with clever walljumps or patient bomb jump loops you can get enough height to grab items early. The game is also very resilient to sequence breaking with its boss order with no flags that require beating the four main bosses in any particular order.

The real masterstroke though is that every ammo pickup is the same, and so your first super missile or power bomb will let you use them even if you didn't get it from the default location. The fact that Dread didn't have that same design was one reason lots of people didn't like it.

Platformers never surpassed Super Mario Bros 3/World. Action/Adventure hasn't surpassed Link to the past. DMC 3 is still the best hack and slash. Street Fighter 2 is the best fighting game. RPGs haven't surpassed Dragon Quest 3 or final Fantasy 6. Streets of Rage 2 is still the best beat-em up. Every genre was perfected by the 4th console gen and anything newly created with the advent of 3D was perfected by 6th gen.

actual truth, there have been many games that had potential to reach similar heights but then fell short
garbage like hollow knight did really bad damage to the whole concept of metroidvanias and now it's plagued by moronic HK fantards and awful games trying to ape HK, now it's always either HK clones or super mediocre slop that is filled with terrible pacing and gameplay that feels unrewarding and simply ticks boxes when it comes to fulfilling the the worse aspects of the genre such as excessive backtracking and introducing too many inaccessible locations far too early (and then neglects shit like being able to mark the map for such locations)

for every one thing a new metroidvania gets right it gets two or even three wrong - the genre's cursed

        Anonymous

        >introducing too many inaccessible locations far too early (and then neglects shit like being able to mark the map for such locations)
you can get map pins. and older games like SotN and SM didn't have this at all, they absolutely suck when it comes to the maps. for SotN:

        >can't place markers on map
        >map doesn't auto-mark gates, ie fog gates, blue/red doors etc
        >map isn't multi-colored to distinguish zones
        >map doesn't have titles of zones
        >map has no visually distinct shapes, all squares
Super Metroid does none of this either

To me, the fun of a randomizer is using stuff you didn't in the main playthrough because you get it earlier at a point where its actually powerful. But every time I've tried the Bloodstained randomizer this has just led to me getting Tis Rosian earlier, making most other spells obsolete even sooner than normal

first one is absolutely not dogshit. it had great gameplay some decent weapons if you went out of your way to get the upgrades. story was pretty decent as well for an indie metroidvania. and the glitch gun was fun to use just to see what happens. 2...yeah gameplay (namely the weapons) sucked and the MC sucked. i think most of the bosses could be skipped too.

The biggest thing holding it back is that the boss fights aren't much fun or dynamic, in my opinion. From what I remember they were all big, bulky monsters that didn't vary up their attacks much.

yeah but thats kinda true with metroid in general though. compare fighting ridley/kraid/mother brain and at most you have to move out of the way of one or two attacks if you have enough energy.

That's mostly true for Metroid from what I've played, though the designs are very distinctive. Hollow Knight and Environmental Station Alpha and I hope most new indie games have smaller agile bosses that are good challenges without resorting to hit trading or repetitive movement.

Is it possible to have 3D metroidvanias? Like Metroid Prime, but more complex and larger worlds.

      Anonymous

Yes, but you run into the issue that 3D platforming is much more difficult to keep crisp and clearly communicated than 2D, as relevant visuals can now get in the way of each other and you can't predict the player's perspective. 3D combat is also much more complex than 2D. Aside from Metroid Prime you have games like Shadow Man, Returnal, and even Dark Souls that play with the concept of exploring an area recursively with new abilities, but in many ways the genre doesn't scale well.

It's more like Ikaruga. All Metroidvanias do it, you just dont see the health bar.

Nah man Ikaruga is a fun game that takes some skill to the bosses, you don't just shoot at them like a bullet sponge, if you have some skill you can even beat them quickly and stylish. Also quit calling it "metroidvanias", it's fricking stupid. Stop perpetuating this meme right now you fricking homosexual.

Not the Anon you've been talking with, but I'll throw in my two cents to say what I didn't like about Flip Witch.
Firstly, the gender-switching gimmick is pointless. It's just used for half-assed platforming and bullet puzzles like the other Anon said. I would have preferred it to be something like Portrait of Ruin, with both girl and boy forms having different abilities.
Secondly, while movement in the game is surprisingly good (you can do the DKC thing of rolling off the ledge, maintaining your jump and then jumping in mid-air) the actual map kind of sucks, and teleport spots are in really inconvenient locations.
The special abilities that you find are all incredibly lame to use.
But the game does look fantastic. Pixel-art is great, and the character designs are memorable. I just didn't really like playing it.

              Anonymous

I liked the Gender flip platforming and boss fight integration myself. I wish it was pushed more, like different attack patterns or powers, but it was fresh.
The map felt pretty okay to me. I wished for more shortcuts via new powers to make trackback better or more teleport points. There was no cross level passways ala Banjo Tooie, which felt sad to me.

I mostly used the same special abilities, and they were the low point for me too. I also didnt like the large focus of quest just being getting gold to buy a costume for a scene. But for an Hentai game, it goes WAY beyond what 95% of other Hentai games do.

Valdis story is one of my favourites but Ganker never discusses it. The combat and platforming feel great and all the characters feel like a new experience.

I'll give the caveat that combat is one of the most important things in a game to me.

Although it sucked I can see where he was coming from. Indra isn’t a Patternmind and Trace is sought by the Rusalki exactly because that trait allowed him to do what she can’t.
The author tried to work around it so Indra’s gameplay focuses more on stealth and restrictive paths, while Trace’s encourages combat and breaking through the game glitching it.
In a sense it worked but in the end it’s way more fun to play as Trace it’s also way cooler when you learn he IS Athetos

      Cringe and bluepilled.

While "Metroidvania" was originally named after Castlevania games that had seemingly Metroid elements, both Super Metroid and Castlevania Symphony of the Night -and all games inspired by them- share more gameplay and design elements than they differ, and Castlevania's more RPG elements (or Metroid's lack thereof) are not enough to distinguish the two as separate distinct genres. Yes the name could be better, yes not all "Metroidvanias" will inherit all Metroid or vania aspects, but so are all video game genre names, the name is just a shorthand to easily explain what type of game it is and it works.

I don't know about realistically proportioned sprites, or sexy monster women(the final boss is a sexy woman) but Aeterna Noctis is a bit like that. It's hollow knight with worse combat but better(or rather far more difficult) platforming.

      Death's Gambit.

The game might be on a gray area of what is or isn't a metroidvania tho, but for me, it is a metroivania and a very good one at that.

I agree that the game is very good but in my opinion it is more of a souls like, especially considering the level system.

I think what's actually holding up the series being continued is that Konami wants to do ANOTHER 3D reboot instead of a 2D Metroidvania. I got no evidence of this, it's just something I feel in my gut.

    repostin my list for eternity
    >Valdis Story: Abyssal City (Actually really fricking good and hard)
    >Touhou Luna Nights (Time stop 2hu fun)
    >Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth (literally same game as above, same deal)
    >Environmental Station Alpha (a bit pretentious in how it handles secrets, but good)
    >Pharoah Rebirth + (Haven't put much into this but its solid)
    >Aquaria (OLD game, but amazing metroidvania.)
    >UnEpic (A little cringe at first and difficult but I ended up loving it)
    >SteamWorld Dig 2 (I had zero expectations for this and was surprised at how fun it was)
    >Ghost 1.0 (Kinda cringe western anime style, ended up being good)
    >AM2R
    >KreisReise (Holy SHIT the camera is a b***h but eventually you get used to it)
    >ゆりかごのそら "yurikago no sora" (EXTREMELY CHARMING, high japanese density, reading optional but menus might trip you up with no experience)
    >Blue Guardian Margaret (ecchi, underwater drowning simulator, horrendously difficult.)
    >迷宮のミウPLUS (3D exploration metroidvania, you will get lost a fricking lot, reading somewhat optional but menus are bad)
    >Repure Aria 1/2 (Porn, actually a VERY good metroidvania. English fan patch somewhere)
    >Boho Youyoumu (Touhou themed doujin metroidvania, not porn. Pretty decent)
    >Asakura/Asakura P!
    >A Robot Named Fight! (Its literally just Super Metroid)
    >Vision Soft Reset (prince of persia-esque time rewind/branching timeline gimmick)

    Not quite "metroidvanias"
    >Crosscode (Scratches a similar itch)
    >Hyper Light Drifter (Same as above really)
    >Iji (More stagelike, not much of a persistent world for backtracking, freeware)
    >Meritous (Yes this counts, freeware)
    >The Messenger (More old Ninja Gaiden but with some collectables and explortaion)
    >ASTLIBRA (More hack & slash, like OoE but even more linear. Amazing game)
    >Gal Guardians Demon Purge (More classicvania, don't get baited by trying to explore early nothing will happen)

      You should try this:

I'm surprised more people don't talk about Afterimage. The sprites are gorgeous and it has a lot of interesting combat options, it was really fun to play. Lots of content too.

I feel like lots of games try to do the CV thing but don't give the player nearly as many build options as most of the CVs.

The story is kinda hard to follow though, the translation feels kinda MTL-ish

Yeah its only just barely a metroidvania because instead of a stage select theres just a single arbitrary door halfway back through another stage. Ironically the DLC was way better designed and it had absolutely zero backtracking at all, just one linear shot to the end.

Perhaps its too hard for them to create compelling enemies, encounters and level design? Did these indie asshats ever even beat a single classicvania game? I think not.

Great game. Looking forward to the dlc

They did themselves no favors with Sargon's awful design. I honestly just went into it blind a few weeks ago because it was on sale for $30 and was really pleasantly surprised how much fun it was.

Difficulty wasn't too hard even on the highest setting, though the final boss gave me a bit of trouble as well as the Archer boss until I figured out a good strategy for him.

The best part of the game though was the platforming which was really fun

Souldiers makes me sad. It would have been a great 2d action platformer but as it is it's just a really fricking tedious game where the metroidvania aspects completely stifle the game with long, boring to retread maps, really unrewarding loot and tedious side questing. No way in shit am I finishing this game once, let alone three times for each class.

Not really, no. It's mostly all about dashes and fairly simple combat, the meat I felt was in the platforming and kind of neat story.
Also it clearly had a much grander scale at the start but then there's a lot of areas that were either cut content, yet to come DLC or sequel material. It also has the shitty story sequences where you get locked into dialog or linear corridors moving forward and then getting locked into dialog.

the combat is a bit clunky in Ender Lilies, but it still has good boss fights. you also unlock a boss rush mode after you beat the main story.

Ender Magnolia (the sequel) seems to have tightened up the combat, but it is in early access and only has 3 hours of content so far.

Much harder to design. Dark souls would pretty much be a metroidvania if there was ability gating and so would a lot of games

        Anonymous

I've seen this argument before, and it confuses me. Surely the sheer notion of ability gating naturally guides level design.

dark souls fans will take any opportunity to compare other games to dark souls

the world design does feel like an evolution of metroid prime but yeah the lack of abilities gating and terrible basic platforming and movement disqualifies it

During the latest Steam sale I grabbed Sheepo, HAAK and Transiruby.
    >sheepo
Short but pretty fun. Rather than getting permanent abilities, you gain contextual ones that are based on what animals you have near you. This means there's very few areas where you have to think about what to use, but rather it's more about the execution. Nothing's particularly hard here, and no combat at all.
    >HAAK
Very fun movement with multiple air dashes. Has a lot of combat but only 1 or 2 bosses could be considered challenging at all. Has a bunch of missable items which is kind of annoying
    >Transiruby
Currently playing this one. Main gimmick is that you can freeze enemies to turn them into platforms. I'm actually getting lost a fair bit since the map's so zoomed out it's hard to really use it to figure out what area leads to where.

God that fricking game. I even liked the weird XP system/healing item thing they had going on because it was clever and something I'd never seen, and then they told me I'd have to go back to shitfrick nowhere and clear out those hallways again for the honor of buying back my abilities. No goddamn thank you. Also the neon aesthetic was cool but everything was overly detailed to the point all the areas looked the same. Felt like I spent more time looking at the map than I did playing.

If you want a timeloop metroidvania but good take a look at Vision Soft Reset.

      Anonymous

No idea. I don't buy the idea that they're harder to design, since level design is naturally guided by ability gating. Might be the lack of resources, actually. 3D games are more resource intensive, though honestly not by that much these days. I would love to see more Prime-likes, personally.

        Anonymous

Good 3D level design is just hard, and 3D movement isn't as easy to sculpt and convey well as 2D. Think about how many 2D games have good wall jumping vs 3D games with good wall jumping.

metroidvanias are just hard as frick to make, or at least make well
can't remember which dev it was but they posted in detail all of the challenges that come with making one and it seemed like torture. you have to be hyper-aware of player pathing and constantly tweaking things, thinking about how players might go through the map in different ways, whether they might block themselves off, whether it feels guided enough while still allowing some freedom so players aren't always getting lost, the order they get abilities etc
making it 3D just complicates it even further since it's not as easy to make quick adjustments to the environment

I tried to play it again this year and for all its ambition and charm it didn't really solve the problem of 2D metroidvanias where you fly/swim insofar as because your verticality isn't gated by gravity, all of your abilities are essentially just door openers. That's true of any metroidvania if you're reductive but it gets even worse once you can't use the stock things of double jump and glide to make certain gaps impassable.

And yet somehow despite that and despite being dated by 15 years, it was still miles better than Pronty.

        Anonymous

Yeah, and I didn't really like how you had to swap modes every time either instead of stacking each new part of the Verse into your kit like Metroid would have done. That said, I still like the game a lot and replay it once every four years or so. It had a lot of neat shit going on, like the way all the music tracks in the game are actually parts of the Verse, or the way Naja momentarily freaks out when you find the whale(not to mention her other small unprompted interactions with stuff in the environment or menus). I listened to Open Waters 3 on loop for an hour while driving earlier today.

For me the most charming thing was how old-style indie it felt. The sprawling soundtrack, the clumsy level design, being able to eat in the food menu by literally dragging the food to your mouth. There's so many small touches of both love and obsession that modern projects usually lack because it's so much easier now. It used to be that if you were making an indie game, you were a freak (and I say that as a term of endearment).

Also, I'll openly admit I didn't finish the game because eventually the traversal and over-reliance on puzzle bosses got to me, but I have an immense respect for it. Dust remains my darling from that era, but I think I'll let those glasses stay rose-tinted for the time being. I'm positive it doesn't hold up and a lot of things I put up with because I was unfamiliar with metroidvanias would now feel excessively stiff and kludgy.

Guacamelee on par with SotN though? Is that real?

        Anonymous

        >Guacamelee on par with SotN
in terms of gameplay I'd actually put Guac higher, maybe. SotN has top-tier presentation but it has a litany of flaws that hold it down. I'm only fond of it for the presentation and the fact that movement feels very fluid. great base for a romhack

        flaws:
        >RPG mechanics are undercooked, entering an ugly menu to equip the item with a bigger number is lame
        >enemies don't always seem tailored to their areas; haunted books in library make sense, boomerang skeletons in the towers and plant b***hes in hallways don't
        >using consumables to heal and such requires lots of menu hopping, tedious
        >too many items in general, single-use items like magic missile are too much of a pain to bother with
        >when you walk into a sub-weapon it throws your equipped one out and can often lead you to chasing it around, this happened constantly by accident. would be better if there was a dedicated button to pick them up
        >hidden weapon moves and abilities like bat dashing, the game never even tells you how to high jump
        >have to use the bat and mist a lot in inverted castle and they're not satisfying to control
        >already have all abilities in inverted castle, nothing to figure out, basically just busywork killing monsters in unusual terrain
        >majority of enemies (bosses especially) don't require actually learning their moves or fighting strategically, it's usually just a DPS race. Dracula is a perfect example and he's a pushover

        map flaws:
        >can't place markers on map
        >map doesn't auto-mark gates, ie fog gates, blue/red doors etc
        >map isn't multi-colored to distinguish zones
        >map doesn't have titles of zones
        >map has no visually distinct shapes, all squares

              Anonymous

A lot of SotN's design decisions make more sense when you realize that it's structured like a JRPG. The hidden moves, the inventory management, the secrets based on having X, Y, and Z equipped in area A after event B; it feels strange and bloated because unlike everything after it, it's not trying to be SotN. It's trying to be Dragon Quest with a double jump.

                Anonymous

What the actual frick are you talking about? Dragon Quest doesn't have inventory management, secrets, or hidden moves, at least none of the ones I've played have. IIRC Igarashi said he was inspired by Zelda when making SotN

          Anonymous

I'm well aware of SotN's flaws (though I wouldn't call a lot of what you mention "flaws"). It's not my favorite Castlevania (OoE is), but I do think it's very interesting, experimental game for something that came out in 1997. It threw a lot of shit at the wall and later Castlevanias mostly preserved the good stuff and did away with awkward crap like the jank transformations

But it's hard for me to imagine some dumbass luchador game that uses rage comic faces being on par with a foundational game like SotN. I haven't played Guacamelee and I don't know much about it, but that's some serious praise I've not heard from anyone else. What makes it that good?

            Anonymous

NTA, but in Guacamelee it just feels good to punch shit. It's not technically complex, the humor isn't deep, but it knows what it's trying to do and the flow of the game that it wants to manifest, and so it prioritizes raw tone and gamefeel over everything else. It also does a solid job of making your upgrades both useful in combat and useful in traversal, with the result that you kit feels more cohesive than games where a better gun doesn't help you open new doors or a glide isn't useful in combat.

Putting it on par with SotN is definitely a case of being deliberately uncharitable to the design philosophy of SotN and essentially putting personal taste over quality of game design, but it's not categorically unhinged.

I'm tired of people constantly fellating it as if it's God's gift to gaming when it's not. not sure if it's just people conflating historical / cultural impact with quality, or people just want to worship a sacred cow with the rest of Ganker to look like a tasteful boomer. maybe both

Yes, most of the praise for Super Metroid comes from speedrun troons who enjoy "sequence breaking," meaning everything they like about it was a literal accident caused by dev team negligence
Said negligence is easily seen in the other aspects of the game. If you just try to play it like a normal fricking Metroid game, it's very bland

          Anonymous

Only some of the sequence breaks are actually unintentional. Stuff like mockball, damage boost ect. But wall

ori 2 definitely gets pretty neat over time, and the bosses are still fun
I just wish it demanded more of the player. If the game wasnt extremely high production value and deeply animated and hard to do simple changes, i'd genuinely make my own autismo mod where i try to make enemies more challenging and some platforming segments explore the movement as much as 1's escape sequences did. But that would unironically require a huge team of people and fricktons of effort

Bashing and dashing and knocking enemies into obstacles is part of combat too.
This still applies to movement a lot, too
Also, forgot to specify something important : Specifically 2. The first game is ideal as it is

it would be much less "combatslop" and a lot more "combatkino" if the overall game encouraged you to get ori's full grace out of more moments.

no idea why anyone even plays SoS. the only thing I can think of is it had good marketing so it attracted normies who didn't realize other turn based RPGs have been released in the past 5 years.

the combat is way too slow, and I say that as someone who enjoys JRPGs. hell, I finished I am Setsuna, but I couldn't force myself to play SoS for more than 2 hours.

Castlevania should not get equal billing with Metroid for "inventing" the genre, especially when Castlevania only added the absolute worst (and unnecessary) part of the formula: JRPG style leveling and equipment and the best Castlevania games don't even play like Metroid anyway.

Its actually amazing to me that all these years later, these indie devs completely suck at replicating Metroid and Metroid is still king by a massive amount. When I played Metroid Dread again it just blows me away how far ahead Nintendo is of everyone else. Metroid Prime Remastered enforced that confirmation.

Metroidvanias pull almost nothing from Metroid. It's a terrible genre name. They should just be called Castlevania-clones, because that's what the entire genre of game is.

You’re all fricking moronic. Metroid established the base elements (item progression in both platforming and combat, save rooms acting as checkpoints, scavenger hunts encouraging exploration) while Castlevania filled out the rest (smaller but more plentiful forms of progression like equipment, secret areas hidden behind extra requirements, multiple characters with different platforming and combat abilities, small puzzles). It may have took until AoS to refine the formula into what we know it to be today, but both franchises formulated the basics and deserve to be credited for the genre’s creation

Yeah, IGA was still figuring out how to make a good Metroidvania while navigating the intricacies of the GBA. Like the colours. Bit hard to see in ambient light conditions. Just wait til you get to Harmony of Dissonance, got a lot of improvements and a lot of rough spots. Great example of IGA’s learning process

The only thing it has going for it is the graphics. The game is less a metroidvania and more of a single corridor where you sometimes flip a switch to change the color of the background. To elaborate, a lot of sections exist only in one time period, and doors between them will be cut off if you aren't in the right one. The areas that do have you explore multiple eras in, are basically only altered in the sense that some obstacle isn't present; enemies are the same, with the same placement, but the ones in whatever isn't the standard time for that zone will be a bit more dangerous.

The weapons are extremely disappointing. There are some very obvious standouts as being what you should use, with most of the crystals only being sidegrades at best, and then ranging straight into being shit to use. Only one real time do you use an ability in the past to clear the way in the future, and it's relatively early in the game.

The story is extremely irritating. It starts out fast with some fairly interesting hooks, and gets you involved in a couple plots. These are then unceremoniously dropped, never explained, and forgotten. You kind of just amble your way onward to defeating The Evil White Man Empire at the far end of the map from where you started. You've probably heard of some of the most egregious bits though, like the infamous campfire cutscene(near as I can remember it was the longest one in the game) which involved all the Brown Freedom Fighters going on ad nausuem about their favorite LGBTBBQLOL orgies of the past and who is who's buttery little cornhole. At one point there was a mod to change it to something more fitting, but it got nuked from orbit by the usual malcontents last I heard.

Finally, the game has a secret final area and ending. It's not as glaringly horrible as some of the other parts of the game, but I will say it's a straight downgrade to either of the two standard endings, and if you do play it I would suggest never triggering it.

      >Dread is a 6/10. good combat, abysmal world design and sucks as a metroidvania, the devs will only ever make a game where it feels good to run fast and shoot thing
      >Ori is too saccharine and linear
      >Yoku is a bad idea, I want to control my character not play fricking pinball
      >The Messenger is bland
      >ESA's rope thing is shit. bosses are bad. wiki autism post-game
      >Prime 2 is a total misstep
      >Blasphemous is a tryhard piece of shit, makes Zanzibart seem tame
      >Wonder / Monster Boy is the gayest thing I've played, made me reconsider my life choices

      as for Super Metroid:
      >looks bad
      >controls like shit
      >sounds like shit, as if you're listening to someone else play it on the other side of a wall
      >combat sucks, game expects you to take a ton of damage because there's no chance of dodging most enemies so the game litters you with fodder enemies to restore health
      >map view is barebones, missing a lot of the QoL features found in later games such as colored sections, marking doors etc
compare it to Demon's Crest in audio and visuals which released just 7 months after Super and it gets blown the frick out. also Fusion is a weak metroidvania but a good game
still gotta play AM2R, Deedlit, Grime, Momodora, Portrait of Ruin, SMT Synchronicity Prologue. /blog

I like Aria way more than SoTN but I dunno I feel like Super hasn't been topped within it's own franchise, but I'm also a prime hater because I've been a PC gay since the days of unreal tournament 1. Though I guess there haven't been too many 2D Metroids after Super.

        >I feel like Super hasn't been topped within it's own franchise

This is correct. I do not agree it is one of the best MVs of all time, but it's still a damn-good game and the crown israeliteel of the Metroid series.

        Anonymous

Super definitely hasn't been dethroned in its series when it comes to non-linearity and size, but that's probably because the series has been in handheld territory for so long. it also has the best atmosphere in terms of isolation, and it's not as crazy on the action and speed like Dread
to me, ZM or Fusion are better as actual games judged as a whole, but they're not the same. ZM is a bite-sized Metroid in your pocket that plays and looks good, and Fusion is a more linear horror take
I don't think Mercury Steam are a good fit for Metroid. they're abysmal at world design and pacing, but good at action and combat, incapable of making a game where you take your time and breathe the world in. they should probably just go back to Castlevania games

          Anonymous

I think their zones were alright in Dread, the problem was the obligation to the Emmi shit because the connotation of being Metroid Dread. same thing with Metroid 2 needing to adhere to the original's format somewhat. I'd love to see what they could make if given a chance to really make a new title, but it seems unlikely for now.

You know what I want to see? An AI-generated infinite Metroid game. The first time you enter an area, the game generates one or two other new areas somewhere that will need you to get a powerup and/or kill a boss in the area you just set foot in. Give it a common set of enemies for each general biome, but AI-gen the bosses. The weapon upgrades and powerups, too, if possible.

Just play A Robot Named Fight until you realize that map design is the purest expression of talent for a metroidvania developer, and automating it is making dross for the sake of dross. Games like Chasm and Sundered have randomized areas, and the result is they have no structure or sense of place to them. The entire joy of exploration is lost because you're not exploring, simply traversing.
