Why has MHW sold so much more than Rise despite it being on less platforms? It's not even on Switch.

World used to have Denuvo, too

Capcom usually remove Denuvo after dropping support for a game. Wait for last update for Rise and add extra 6 months and denuvo should be gone from Rise too.

MHW had prettier graphics and a bigger marketing push

      This too
It's the difference between "why did this bottle I shook for two hours burst immediately but then it only had a normal amount of pressure afterwards?"
The prospect of a super pretty HD Monster Hunter game on modern hardware got everyone excited and it was pretty novel for a lot of people. But I wager a lot of people decided they weren't that big on Monster Hunter after trying it out, and those people didn't pick up Rise.
Rise's audience is probably the same way but with Nintendo fans (though MHGU did come out and was pretty good in 2018 on Switch).
The basic gist to understand here is that MHW2/MHRise 2 will probably not sell as well as MHW1/MHRise. Why? Because people actually know what these games are like now and have made up their minds on whether they like them or not. There's less FOMO/novelty associated with them.
It's like how FF8 sold 8 million units and FF9 sold 5 million. The success of the newest entry in a long running series is usually somewhat affected by how people felt about the previous one. And if people played World/Rise because they were Flavor of the Month and then realized they don't like this type of action game, they're unlikely to pick up the next entry

World was a lot of guy's first and last Monster Hunter. They bought a game for hype and dropped it a week later.

  10. 10 months ago
    Anonymous

It was perceived as a step back in the technology used to create the game, thus giving the impression of a lower quality production (which it kind of is). Put that in with a couple ill conceived mechanics (spiritbirds) and baffling decisions (online and how it's structured) and you have a deservedly less popular game.
What console warriors fail to realize is that none of this means Rise is a bad game. It is in fact an amazing one and insanely fun with legit improvements that World's sequel could definitely use, like the weapon designs, the return of actual lore blurbs for each monster material, dem dogs, some weapon moveset additions (particularly for hammer) and most importantly that 60 fps that the game managed to achieve (probably not on switch tho).
I can't stress enough how much more fluid Rise feels thanks to a better framerate. Like holy shit, I thought I was getting old and slow but no, it was the damn game all along.

World hit a zeitgeist of casual engagement that monhun never had previously.

Now that it has been proven that this was a huge fricking mistake, Rise returned somewhat back to the roots, abandoning worldsperm who were just touring the franchise from the hype generation.

Now capcom should just continue to return further back on failed systems and keep successful ones. Actual, real monhun players will play it, worldsperm be damned.

MHW is on PS5 and XSX, too, dummy

  14. 10 months ago

Because, prior to World, Monhun was a rather niche series.
World pulled pulled out all the stops with the higher fidelity graphics, advertising, etc that drew in the normalgay crowd that tried out a game they likely thought was the first entry to exist and most of them filtered out.

Anyone who doesn't think a new monster hunter game would be on all three major platforms at once after all those game sales is in extreme denial and delusion. It all depends whether nintendo cares about having strong enough hardware for it.

Rise only just got ported to Xbox and Playstation. MHW launched on both AND on PC after a long hiatus of not being on home consoles and never being on PC period. MHW has also been out 3 years longer

  21. 10 months ago
    Anonymous

    >despite it being on less platforms?
They diluted all the potential customers. Rise came out on Switch, then after 1 year it went to Steam only, this already put off a lot of people not wanting to do all the grind again, And after a while it came out on PS5/Xbox, which made the new player base even smaller from people who are done with it or won't change platforms.
When world came out it was on all platforms at the same time except switch

      Anonymous

      >When world came out it was on all platforms at the same time except switch
Part of the reason it caused the platform wars it did is because it didn't come to PC for several months. It was literally PS4 exclusive in Japan since they didn't get an Xbox version.

is Monster Hunter like WoW raiding in a sense?

      Anonymous

As someone that used to raid in WoW and is a huge fan of Monster Hunter. Not at all.
Monster Hunter is really hard to compare to any other genre as it is very much it's own thing. It's only slight comparison would be something like Dark Souls but in a tiny way.

      Anonymous

maybe a little bit like classic wow as in if you are the moron to farm even the most rarest usable you will have a slight advantage, but besides that not at all

  23. 10 months ago
    Anonymous

World got a lot of hype because a ton of people were discovering Monster Hunter for the very first time. It was the first Monster Hunter game available on those platforms (if you don't count stuff like Frontier, which most of them didn't have access to). It was, for all intents and purposes, baby's first Monster Hunter.

Rise also released on Switch first, so a ton of newcomers on other platforms who wanted to play Monster Hunter played a title that WAS available on their platform at the time. That, of course, being World. Rise literally drove more World sales.

World is great because it wasn't like most MH games. Most of the gear wasn't pure dogshit tranime cancer, it had great production values, mostly all new monsters that make sense in their habitat and aren't just thrown together without any reason. Didn't have dogshit "variants and subspecies" and other cheap recolor monsters. Still had cancer like high rank, tempered monsters, insect glaive, various tranime weapon moves, shitty tranime pokemon looking monsters like Teostra and gimmicks like the arm cannon bullshit but it was mostly okay. Ever since Tri this was the best and only MH game in the same spirit as MH1.

Iceborne and Rise were complete trash though and ruined all the good things World achieved.

Yeah. Azure and Pink were just the bottom of the barrel. Indefensible garbage. But compare that to the usual amount e.g. what Iceborne or what handheld MH games have.

      >monsters that make sense in their habitat and aren't just thrown together without any reason.

I love this because I can just immediately discard the entire post, because clearly you have no fricking clue what you are talking about. Monsters from the oldgen games have way more thought put into their ecology than Worldshit, where “fanged wyvern” was retconned into meaning “anything that looks like a lizard” when it should be monsters like Zinogre who share traits with both Fanged Beasts and wyverns. Hell, Flying Wyvern used to be the “giant lizard” category because Akantor and Ukanlos shared some lineage with Tigrex. Later games with the fanged beast categorization were careful not to mess with this aspect of the ecology and world throws it out because they just stopped giving a shit about the established universe and wanted to make a the video game equivalent of a bad Discovery channel speculative biology miniseries

Yes I’m mad. Frick world. And it absolutely had subspecies and model reuses too, it was just slightly better hiding them
