Seems like they moved away from the ultra processed canned strings from 11 and added more route diversity on strings and cancels but I only watched Aris frick around a bit. Are attacking strings more varied or canceled or are we going to be watching the same cool choreographed strings literally 10 times every round again?

Its literally what NRS have been doing for decades now. Since mk armageddon, mkvsdcu, mk9, injustice, mk11 and now mk1. Its been reboots, merged/mixed universes/timelines. Over and over again.
They literally dont know what to do with those games anymore. It reminds me of playing as children, you get bored with whatever story you created and decide to reset it.
It also shows in gameplay decisions, roster and now even graphics. Horrible choices and designs all over the place
I enjoyed that they actually put some time and effort into the single player campaigns and other modes for MK11 (after they fixed the broken grindy Krypt shit when people complained. Its kind of unusual - WB puts shitfrick microtransactions and bad design in their games at times, but they're also some of those that overhaul and remove them when there are complaints unlike other companies. Shadow of War Definitive Edition is the best example, but there have been a few others). Hell, as I recall MK11 was a rare example of even the new seasons of DLC characters being added to the campaign and other single player modes, unlike say.. DBFZ which had a nice original mode but ever fricking updated anything or expanded it. Its kind of unusual that Street Fighter 6 and MK1(2) both seem to have a lot of new single player mode shit and that's nice to see, beyond simply being a frame data training or combo challenge mode and a hyper fixation on online play exclusively.
Anyone think its worth it to go finish some of the previous games (MK11, maybe X? ) story modes to get caught up for MK1(2) and warm up a bit?

MKX was so fricking good but I can see Ed Boon not considering it his magnum opus like 3s or +r is for their series. Is he going to make it before he hangs up his hat or is MK1 his best shot before he hands things off to his Liu Kang. I can already say the designs aren't as good as they've been, getting normal looking people as the characters is cool but they don't mesh well with their costumes I feel. They look like normal people who might be karate masters but they got a Hollywood set to dress them up and it doesn't mesh. Gameplay is still to be seen. Passively recharging offensive and defensive meters you can do cool offensive and defensive stuff with sounds sound from a gameplay design perspective but it's not something organic and spineripping or on the other hand completely inhuman. I feel like it'd almost be better if they added the bars together and just called it stamina and you can do what you want with it.
They should have added two more bars a neutral bars and an oki bars
Wait no everything costs bar. Something special happens when you do a move that depletes the bar and once bar is depleted your character pulls out their weapon/ace in the whole and gets stronger.
The characters look like cosplayers is what you meant to say. MKX was the last game where the characters looked how they are supposed to. Even Shao Kahn looks fricking weird
Yeah they look like cosplayers, people dressed up in costumes which is how they literally did the first few mks. Them doing it again is kino but I think the costume designers did a bad job meshing the costumes with that fact. I bet if the player models had to pick the costumes for their characters or were the design leads for them they'd be cooler.
Wait scratch that they'd probably just want something super maneuverable like a simple gi with a sweet impact vest on it or something. What I meant to say was they should have had bad ass loremasters make them wear cooler shit that ties together with how the actor looks.
The designer is just weird, he ir she just randomly adds clothes and plates everywhere, MKX knew what it wanted to be so its why you had good designs like Assassin Kitana and Mileena Khan
Also I hate how they killed Cage's family, not like I didnt expect this since they were a comfy white family

I know what you mean. I think the outfits do a very bad job at characterising, its like they wanted to go simple but were scared that'd be boring so added useless detail. The Edenians just have random metal strapped to them. Not enough to look like warriors, not crafted enough to look regal, not unique enough to give an instant impression of each character. Sort of feels like how AI art adds detail with no real purpose. They've just churning out so many versions of these base designs they have no where to go. When this reboot was the best chance to really reinvent them.
Combos system does seem way more fun than MK11 though and I'm tempted to buy just to mess around in training mode. I'll wait to see how open it actually is.

The story is genuinely fun up until they brought back time paradox nonsense and timelines back. There's a really interesting new timeline to explore and the writers just couldnt help themselves into dragging back MK11's horrible plot from the grave.

The time paradox nonsense literally put the pre-existing timeline plot to a halt, they have a super duper big marvel fight which leads to Liu Kang doing more time bullshit to repair the timeline and then the ending starts at the END OF THE CURRENT TIMELINE PLOT where the character just talks about it over dinner.

Why did MK start doing uncanny in a bad way? The same time their gameplay stopped being sick as hell? Nusmoke gets his hair done, nothing wrong with that, but maybe they should have leaned into that and added things that suggest he and his perfect hair never gets hit? Like make him half naked except he's wrapped in the Lin Kuie's dojo scroll which he stole or something.
Oops forgot pick. Honestly his new design is kind of in line with his old design but there's nothing that ties him together or just screams cool like being a cool ninja does.
The design is simple like Smoke has always been but I think his voicelines definitely add to the lameness factor. All the voicelines I've heard so far is just quippy quips and nothing to suggest that he's a bad ass ninja with his own motives or beliefs or reason for fighting anything.

Just finished the story. The gameplay is pretty bad, even compared to 11. Smoke is fricking dogshit compared to his appearance in 9, totally ruined.
Also, the cameo system taking up the bumper which was formerly used for enhancing attacks is such a mess, NRS are morons.
