I don't think we'll see a Series X360 or whatever they would call it, XBOX will become a publisher / PC games platform after this generation. Xbox Studios just can't make compelling enough experiences to sell consoles.

Nintendo are really a separate entity now. They were shit to third party in the NES/SNES era, tried to redeem themselves with gamecube and got beat down. Since then they've been heavily focussed on first party IP and the marriage between hardware and software (Wii, ring fit). So PS5 and Switch 2 can be successful without it really impacting the other.

I got a Series S solely as a quick, convenient vessel for Rare Replay; it's worked very well for that and I've been picking up old shit like Sonic Unleashed when it goes on sale in the store. What baffles me about the Series S/X is this distinct lack of "presence" it has. Nintendo's always relevant, so it's easy for the Switch to come to mind in conversation. And whenever I see marketing for new AAA releases, they're either Sony exclusive, timed exclusive, or the SSD loading times are mentioned as a pro for PS5. Microsoft refuses to carve out an identity for this fricking thing outside of Forza and I have to wonder what the frick it's doing there when I walk into an electronics section and see all the console boxes.
I'm not saying Sony is doing a particularly good job with exclusives, far from it, but it's more than Microsoft. I guess they're just committing to merging their PC and console ecosystem but the console still feels way more like a console than a PC-in-a-box/Steam Deck. Hell the PS5 has those adaptive triggers and shit in the controller to separate itself that little bit more, even if that'll only amount to making Astro's Playroom a neat little 4h experience.
Series S is the only thing that's propped them up because it's cheap. My gf has one and it serves a purpose for a small niche of casual gamer as a game pass machine but that also cannibalises game sales compared to PS5. There's really no point in it when all games go on PC and Sony countered game pass already by making PS+ a more serviceable version of PS now. Also there's still the assumption that as the gen goes on Sony will do what they normally do and try to throw their weight around with more paid exclusives.

Yup. I only bought my Series X as the console + Gamepass was a substantially better deal than paying the scalped graphics card prices when it launched. The only identity Xbox has is "a PC with less features and cheaper", which is a very small market that playstation is also a compelling option in.
It was a good game for sure, but when your only success is a decent single player game that had zero marketing and was played exclusively via a subscription service you've fricked up massively. No increase in brand awareness, no new compelling IP, and no sales.

The main defenses I've seen for it are gamepass and "it's cheaper than a PC" but the PC gamepass has about as good a selection as the console one at this point and the cheapness is only really appealing for some kid that needs his parents to buy him one for christmas, otherwise you're much better off just saving up for a month or two to get a decent PC.

It's visually unappealing (subjective), has ads, the groups functionality is a pain in the ass to get setup and then constantly tweak, positioning control still feels locked-down, I'd like to avoid having Settings and other apps in my most recently "played" list after having needed to dive into that screen to check why my headphones aren't working, and I'd like the option to have folders.
I liked XMB on PS3/PSP and the 3DS UI, both of which had everything accessible but still let you neatly bundle everything you didn't care about away. The Xbox UI doesn't let you do this and so you need to load 100+ icons to display all of the groups which then need to be manually tweaked every time I buy a game by diving through 3 different menu screens (homescreen -> groups -> add games to group).

I'm not going to drop a dissertation because I haven't spent much time thinking about it but most prominently is how sidelined the actual PLAY GAME option is; you have to be on the first tab of the homescreen and it's in a little square up toward the top among a sea of advertisements, links to the shop, and irrelevant shit designed to distract you. I always feel like I have to stop and actively hunt for my library because it feels designed to not allow you to develop some muscle intuition; you know how with the Switch you just mash your button of choice 2 times and launch your most recent game without having to think about it? It never happened for me with the SeS and I don't think that's my fault. Because I've never had to think about it prior. That said console UIs have been universally shitting themselves since the PS3 / 360 post-blade removal so it's not a particularly important point anyway; I only replied to you because that was a good post that articulated a lot of true and important points better than I could and I don't want to see it dismissed over a petty detail.

Xbox has conditioned its users not to buy games. If you are a game developer or publisher, why would you take time and money to make an Xbox version when those customers don't buy games? So the geniuses of Microsoft pay publishers to put their games on GamePass, now expand that on a scale of thousands of games. That's not sustainable without a large userbase of Xbox and PC people paying the RentPass fee. The entire console ecosystem for Microsoft today is just a live service games and rent machines like they run their PC Microsoft Office Suites as rentals.
The Activision Blizzard buyout just solidifies that Microsoft has no soul, they don't want to improve so they will strongarm the market into their vision of selling rental and live services. Microsoft is selling worse than the Xbox One era in every market, Microsoft has failed to grow GamePass since its 6 years on the market, and the head of Xbox that is Phil Spencer continues to talk about the next year being the one year they turns things around. They're actually completely and utterly fricked, the first thing they did after the ActBlizz acquisition was to put those games on Steam. It's actually over, all Microsoft has is GamePass. All they can do in the future is release GP exclusives not on Steam and pray that's enough to make anyone care about the service. But when EGS exists, the odds are not looking good. Microsoft threw away everything, they needed everyone to buy a Series S so that they could leverage that to get Windows Store exclusives but it didn't work. Valve won by doing nothing.
It's what got me to get an xbox in the first place thanks to play anywhere, lots of consumer friendly practices the competition would wish you'd forget.

Consumer friendly for the time being you mean, they've already raised the price of GP multiple times and dialed back the trials. We saw them during the 360 where they're directly responsible for popularizing paid online and mtx, having timed exclusive dlc and more timed exclusives than any other gen. They used their power to get games like Dark Souls onto GFWL which was a terrible service with terrible ports that made Starfield look optimized.
Oldgays know not to trust them again and most gamers are going to value being able to play more games than playing the same exact ones between your TV and PC. They needed PC and Xbox to be separate things again but the specter of Mattrick still looms over the company. That's also the reason why many PC exclusive genres like RTS, 4X, and even MMOs are pretty dead these days. Microsoft made it so PC and console games are now the same thing targeting the same audiences. It's only indies and Riot left on PC as exclusives.

Well it's never going to double overnight at this point because that would just be absurd. If it were to overnight go up 6 dollars though I would just not pay for it again. The issue with that is that games like Omori can be completely removed from Xbox(and PC GP) at any time with no physical version. Omori was on GP one day then completely removed from the Xbox/PC GP ecosystem the next, meanwhile the PS4 and Switch have physical copies so even if Nintendo or Sony tried to remove the game they wouldn't be able to do it completely.
This is THE biggest problem with renting games in the digital age.
Everybody knows gamepass doesn't really work as a business until they have a lot more scale, so prices will go up. Also it's Microsoft, the predatory company from Seattle that is often the worse of American big tech.
And why should a game publisher release a video game on Xbox, the platform who has significantly less potential customers and even less people who want to buy games. Since you obviously can't think, if you're a AA game studio why should you waste time and money to make a Series X and S port of your game? There aren't that many people who bought these consoles and many of those people who bought it don't want to pay for games.

The problem with that is that Xbox is STILL the FPS dudebro console. That's their base that stuck around over the years so if they released a bunch of weeb games that base wouldn't give a frick about them even if they were good. Hi Fi Rush is a testament to that, awesome game but the core Xbox audience does not want it even for "free". Look at something like the original Octopath Traveler which did so poorly on GP That Microsoft decided to not pay for the sequel to even get an Xbox port.
As long as Microsoft has every game ported to PC, the players that care about those non FPS games will play on PC instead because that's where idorts are at. Since they're also releasing games on Steam that means PCgays would rather give Valve $30 for something like HFR than pay $1 to rent it via GP. However, if they now stop the Steam ports then the PCgays will riot and boycott and as shown by Epic Game Store, that can actually frick a company regardless of how good the exclusives you have are. Fifa will always be a EU game and the Europeans are too loyal to Sony. Sony in Europe is like Nintendo in America, they all grew up with a Playstation. Getting them to stop buying Playstations is impossible, not even FIFA could get them to switch. The CoD situation is dependent on the franchise not becoming horrifically worse in the next 10 years as well, until then there will be Playstation ports that snoys will keep buying instead of swapping to Xbox. Following the release of MW3, that's asking a lot. Making sure the next CoD games are somehow god tier should be Microsoft's big focus going forward but doing so would probably end up killing Halo even more than they already have.
