Wild Gunman might be the weakest title in the entire black box catalog. Imagine charging full price for two WarioWare micro games. At least with Duck Hunt you can control the duck with the second controller.
I was thinking about that one when I made the post, but Urban Championship at least has some level of variety and a two player mode. Not a good game, but an attempt was made.
IMO Wild Gunman works in the arcades where you will play for about 90 seconds, watch your friends play, and then move on.
>Easily the most striking and iconic box art line ever.
SMS grid box art is more iconic, nes had too many different styles that didnt last long enough for them to get this title
The US and Japan are the only people who made vidya though, unless you count those british "games" that are nothing but flying a bird around and shitting on people or really bad platformers.

I know the game you mean. It was Potty Pigeon on C64.
and Korea. and Australia. and the UK. and Europe. and most of the globe outside fatmerica and japan.
This. It's ridiculous how, just because the NES at the time had a better library, the Master System suddently has no worth or something, it's one of the best consoles ever made, with strong titles in it that hold up even today, especially if you count the stuff released only in Europe and Brazil, as it didn't get all that many releases in the US/JP due to poor sales. It's a good machine, give it a shot.
The PAL "black box" games use the unedited Japanese artwork ('cept Ice Climber which turned the seal into a yeti) which my opinion looks better. Devil World is also technically a black box game.
Also I just noticed how weird is is that the arcade conversions say both "arcade series" and "the original" to emphasize it. Pick one or the other, both is a bit much.
The PAL and Japanese art, while being nice and full of character can't compare to the US releases. It was the first time the box art really provided a fairly accurate representation of the graphics you were going to get from the game itself.
I'm just now realizing how many of these I have not played, especially some basic ones like Excitebike and Mach Rider. Time to get back to RetroArch...
A lot of these are really shit. You could easily skip all the sports titles. A lot of the rest you can play for 15 minutes or so and get the full experience, so not much reason to keep playing unless you really like it.

Why the frick didn't they use the actual pixel art for these things?
The idea was to give people buying the game an actual idea of what the game was like, by the front cover. As such, they're all done in an "action pose" sort of style while also using the in-game sprites. Remember, this was just after the whole E.T. Atari crash and people were suspect about a movie cover hiding an awful looking game.
As for why not use screenshots? A lot of the "action" was generally spread all over the screen, and so compacting everything together in a small section gives a better impression about what all is in the game. An actual screenshot would cut out a lot interesting things happening because most doesn't occur direction next to the player sprite. They also give the impression that the games are more colorful and have more going on than what they actually do, which I'm sure helped with marketing.
i would take ten of those
maybe twelve

why did nintendo america feel the need to make every box fricking pigfat until the gamecube?
Because I like them games chonky. It's always better to have big package, but you surely wouldn't understand.
They were fat pigu until the Wii. Cube cases were also large compared to the Japanese.

Counterpoint: Urban Champion

I like how you can just tell Slalom was made by Rare from the box art. Nintendo had a pretty uniform artstyle at the time.
Easily the most striking and iconic box art line ever. Blue Mario throws me off though.

the Master System boxart was too samey
Nobody cares about the Master System.
Don't be disrespectful to Brazil.

I think pal covers depended on if it was the mattel version. All my pal nes games had the pixel covers anyway.

SMB1 was the 1st one among them that actually was long and more then 4 screen level arcade experiences.

What
Several of my friends had this game and I never knew this.
