I personally like Sonic Rush. Not everyone agrees. The GBA games have their fans.
Avoid everything else.

its the closest the 3d games got to classic gameplay, has the best level design in the 3d games and is the most replayable because of all the shenanigans you can do with the spindash
the bugginess is a meme that only applies to the shitty ports
if you take into account all of the character stories its a very flawed game, but if you just stick to sonics campaign its a solid ass platformer
and as much as people like to b***h about boost, generations is also worth playing. its vapid as frick and plays nothing like youd expect sonic to in 3d, but its probably the highest quality and most consistent modern sonic game
still play the mega drive games first though

Only play Sonic 1, Sonic 2, S3&K, SA1, SA2, Rush Adventure, Unleashed (Wii), Colors (DS), Generations (PC) and Mania.
Those are the only great Sonic games, anyone who tells you otherwise has shit standards and probably likes mediocre garbage like Heroes.
